Iberico jowl grilled skewers late-night at Jusangnakwon, Dongtan bar

In short

Jusangnakwon is a fusion Korean bar in Dongtan, Hwaseong, near the Buk Plaza back alley intersection. The writer stopped by for a nightcap before crashing at a friend's place, ordering charcoal-grilled Iberico pork jowl, crispy shrimp minari pancake, and beef chuck jjamppong soup, all satisfying with smoky char and spicy broth. Open until 3am, it's a great spot for a second or third round.

My friend lives in Dongtan, and I was staying over for the night, so before heading to her place I looked for somewhere good for a hearty nightcap and a chat — and ended up at Jusangnakwon, a Dongtan restaurant-bar that's been getting hot lately!

I'd heard the side dishes were excellent, and it lived up to its reputation as a Dongtan hotspot — the fusion Korean menu was so solid I was more than satisfied 💕

Getting there and the exterior

It's on the 1st floor near the intersection in the back alley below Dongtan Buk Plaza, right across from Badang Pocha, so it stands out immediately even on your first visit. The clean, atmospheric exterior catches your eye as you pass by, so you won't get lost looking for this Dongtan bar ✨ Even someone as directionally challenged as me found it right away ☺️

What's the vibe like inside and upstairs?

The hall goes back much deeper and feels more spacious than it looks from outside!

Plus, the cozy 2nd floor is bigger than expected, so it can handle a crowd just fine! The tables weren't crammed together either, so it was easy to talk comfortably 😚 With the modern yet warm lighting, it'd make a great date spot too, and it seemed perfect for group gatherings among the bars near Dongtan Buk Plaza.

A fusion menu that hits the spot

They have a wide range of menu items filling enough to serve as a meal — hearty soups, charcoal grills, and pancake dishes. There's also a variety of distilled spirits that pair well with these Korean-based side dishes, so drink lovers will be satisfied here 🤪 We ordered the signature dish along with a few other items we were curious about.

Al saeu chip served as the basic side dish

I was extra happy that the basic side dish was al saeu chip (shrimp shell chips), which I love 🥰

Juicy, savory charcoal-grilled Iberico pork jowl

The moment it hit the table, that distinctive charcoal-grilled smoky smell filled the air! Being Iberico pork jowl, it was packed with juice and had a chewy yet tender texture!

Eaten with the sauce and vegetables that came alongside, it worked perfectly both as a drinking snack and a satisfying meal 👍🏻

Crispy, fragrant shrimp minari pancake

The minari (water dropwort) served with the grilled dish was so good that I immediately ordered the minari pancake! The thickly fried pancake came piled high with plump, springy shrimp!

The first bite gave a crispy texture along with the fragrant minari aroma filling my mouth 😚 It wasn't greasy at all — clean and nutty — and dipping it in the soy sauce made it even more delicious! They also gave us a different sauce besides the soy one, and that sauce was seriously a hidden gem 😘 The quality of the side dishes at this Dongtan bar was better than most dedicated pancake places 💕

Spicy, hearty beef chuck jjamppong soup

To finish, we ordered the spicy jjamppong soup loaded with beef chuck as our broth-based side dish. The savory taste of the beef chuck and the refreshing seafood flavor came right through in the broth — it was amazing ㅠㅠ

Spicy yet deeply savory — the kind of flavor that makes you crave a shot of soju! If I didn't have an early morning the next day, I would've had soju ㅠㅠ Keeping the schedule in mind, I held back and just had beer instead. It's a warming side dish that fills you right up, so this is a must-order 🙌

Even without adding noodles separately, udon noodles were already mixed in! The broth itself was so good I wanted to keep adding more udon noodles 🥹

Would I go back?

Every single side dish felt made with care, making this the best spot for a meal-plus-drinks combo. I've already saved it on my Dongtan bar list and I'm definitely going back for the next get-together! Highly recommend when you're craving delicious fusion dishes and a drink 😚
