Hwaseong Chinese restaurant weekend lunch: jjamppong rice with

In short

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a cockle jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) specialist in a side alley across from Banseok Art Hall in Dongtan, Hwaseong. For weekend lunch, the writer ordered basic-spicy cockle jjamppong rice instead of noodles, alongside yunijjajang (minced-meat black bean sauce noodles), alternating between the hearty spicy broth and the sweet jjajang sauce. Verdict: a solid spot to revisit whenever jjamppong cravings hit.

I went back to Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch when I was craving something hearty and spicy near Dongtan's south square. As the name suggests, cockle jjamppong is the signature dish here, but this time I ordered the rice version instead of noodles, along with the soft, mellow yunijjajang.

I'd been to Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong before — this is a re-revisit! This time, unlike usual, I got the jjamppong rice, and it was also seriously delicious...

Where is it located?

It's in an alley full of restaurants, right across from Banseok Art Hall.

Parking, exterior, interior

I visited on a weekend lunch, and maybe because of that, the public parking lot in front of the restaurant was completely full. Watch out for parking congestion during busy lunch and dinner hours. That said, there are plenty of spots overall. Parking is free for 1.5 hours, which was plenty of time to eat during a non-waiting time slot!

Make sure to settle your parking payment in advance before leaving. Even if you haven't gone over the time limit, you must settle before pulling out!

Once you walk in, there's a CatchTable kiosk. The place was nearly fully booked when I visited, and I almost had to wait. Inside, the hall is quite spacious, with 2- and 4-person tables set comfortably apart — fine whether you're eating alone or with family or coworkers for lunch. The self-serve bar has pickled radish, onion, kimchi, water, and small plates all set out, so you just grab what you need. Overall it felt clean and well-organized.

They're also running a Naver receipt review event. Write a photo review and you can get 6 pieces of fried dumplings or a drink — worth joining for an even more satisfying meal!

Menu board and choosing a spice level

We ordered jjajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles) and cockle jjamppong rice! I'm a spice wimp, so I went with the basic level, haha. Just like the description said, it was deliciously spicy! (not actually spicy for me)

How did it taste?

🍜 Yunijjajang

The yunijjajang we ordered alongside had a completely different charm from the jjamppong rice, so it was great to order both. The ingredients in yunijjajang are finely minced, so the sauce coated the noodles evenly, and every bite brought out that sweet, savory jjajang sauce flavor. Eating jjamppong rice continuously can make your mouth feel spicy from the hearty broth, but switching to the sweet, soft yunijjajang in between totally changed the mood.

🍚 Jjamppong rice

Here's the jjamppong rice I tried first. I think the broth matters most in jjamppong rice, and with the first spoonful, I could taste the hearty spice along with the clean, refreshing flavor from the seafood. Being a cockle jjamppong, it had a bit of a different charm from regular jjamppong, and scooping up broth and cockles together with the rice was so good.

One unusual thing — jjamppong rice usually has a bit of glass noodles in it, but here it had regular jjamppong noodles instead. It's noted on the menu that this is to match the richness of the broth! That probably explains why the broth felt so heavy and dense.

Final verdict

I randomly thought of it and went back to Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch once again! It's the place that comes to mind whenever I crave jjamppong around here. I've tried a lot of other places, but this one's still the best, haha. I recommend it for both lunch and dinner visits!!
