Danyang clay-room pension with a firepit lit for you: Soseonam Hwangto

In short

Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse is an ocher-clay (hwangto) pension on Daejam 2-gil in Danseong-myeon, Danyang, Chungbuk. A couple stayed in the Seokmun room, a studio-style unit for 2 guests (up to 4) with a separated bathroom and shower room, and used the firepit area where the owner stacked the firewood and lit the fire for them; the hwangto sauna was not open yet and was scheduled to start in December. Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse is a quiet Danyang stay for resting among the mountains.

This week my husband and I (the Chapchap couple) took another trip to Danyang, a place we'd visited not long ago. Danyang's gorgeous mountain scenery kept popping into my head, so this trip was a pretty last-minute decision. Normally we'd go camping, but we wanted a comfortable rest this time, so we booked a pension for a change.

While looking around for somewhere to stay in Danyang, I came across a place with great reviews and a charming hwangto (ocher clay) vibe.

It's called "Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse." You can rest comfortably surrounded by quiet nature, so I wanted to share it with anyone looking for a good Danyang pension recommendation. Today I'll walk you through the room, the surroundings, and our own stay from start to finish. If you're planning a Danyang trip and searching for a solid Danyang pension, want to take a look together? 😄

Inside the Seokmun clay room

Exterior of the hwangto building with the Seokmun room

We stayed in the Seokmun room, on the left of the first floor in the building in the photo. Even from the outside, you can really feel that warm, cozy hwangto vibe, haha.

Terrace space with a table in front of the room

Walking up to the room, a big picture window next to the door caught my eye, letting you see right into the room. Right in front was a little terrace-like spot with a table, too — a nice place to sit and take in the scenery or have a cup of tea. Even before stepping inside, the first impression was great, haha.

The owner showed us in and handed over the Seokmun room key, which had a cute little keyring attached, so I snapped a photo of it. 😄

Room with ocher brick-patterned walls and wood interior

Opening the door, the first things I noticed were the ocher brick-patterned walls and the wood interior. There was a subtle wood scent too, so just walking in already felt relaxing. The room is a neat studio-style layout with the bed and kitchen in one space.

Bed large enough for two adults

The bed was plenty big for two adults, and the wardrobe had extra mattress pads, blankets, and pillows neatly stacked inside. The Seokmun room we used has a standard capacity of 2 and a max of 4, so it looked good for couples as well as small families.

What the kitchen and basic amenities include

On one side was a sink and induction cooktop, plus every kind of dish and cooking tool you'd need. After all our camping trips where we had to pack every piece of gear ourselves, coming to a Danyang pension that had everything ready like this felt so nice, haha.

Microwave, rice cooker, and other basic amenities

A TV, microwave, fridge, electric rice cooker, electric kettle, and even a hair dryer — all the basic amenities you'd need for a stay were well stocked.

Separate bathroom and shower room

Inside the room, there was a sink in the middle with a bathroom on the left and a shower room on the right, each separate. Since the toilet and shower aren't crammed into one space, it was a much more convenient layout when two people needed to use it at the same time.

In the middle was a spacious sink with a large mirror, plus hand soap. The area around the sink was kept tidy, so washing up or brushing your teeth was no hassle at all.

The bathroom on the left was also fairly clean. It had the basics — toilet paper, a trash can — and the space didn't feel cramped, so it was comfortable to use.

The shower room on the right had wood paneling on the upper walls, giving it that same warm, cozy feel as the rest of the room. The lower part was tiled for easy upkeep, and there was a small window too, good for airing the room out after a shower. On a shelf were shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, each provided separately.

The firepit area and a walk around the pension grounds

Pension amenities and yard view
Rest area on the pension grounds surrounded by nature

It's not a pension packed with flashy amenities, but there were spots to relax at ease surrounded by nature. Of all of them, the one that stuck with me most was the dedicated bonfire (bulmeong) space.

Dedicated bonfire space at the pension

If you ask the owner ahead of time, they'll fill the space with firewood and even light the fire for you at whatever time you'd like. Thinking back on all the camping trips where we struggled to prep firewood and get a fire going, this level of ease was unbeatable, haha.

Doing bulmeong here, I realized the firewood I'd been burning at campsites was basically a mini brazier by comparison. The fire here was truly roaring, and it was so good. Guess bigger really is better with everything, haha.

The hwangto sauna opens in December

True to its name, Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse also has a separate hwangto (ocher clay) sauna. Unfortunately, when I visited it wasn't open yet, so I could only take photos of the inside without actually using it. 😢 When I asked the owner, they said the hwangto sauna would start operating from December. 😭

Inside was a small table for sitting comfortably, and it looked cutely set up so you could enjoy a warm cup of tea too. It seems like it would be perfect to enjoy a hot hwangto sauna in winter followed by a cup of tea, so we already decided to come back again in winter, haha.

Danyang mountain scenery around the pension

Lastly, just as much as the bonfire space and the hwangto sauna, what I loved about Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse was the surrounding scenery. The natural landscape around the pension was beautiful in every direction, and getting away from the busy city to rest quietly here was healing in itself.

Is this Danyang pension worth a stay?

Room and surrounding scenery at Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse

Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse was a comfortable Danyang stay with a clean room and everything we needed well stocked. What stuck with me most were the bonfire we enjoyed with a big roaring fire and the beautiful scenery around the pension. It was a shame we couldn't use the hwangto sauna, but overall it was a satisfying Danyang pension where we truly got to unwind in quiet nature. 😄
