A few days ago my friend and I went to Hyangnam to check out Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi Hyangnam Branch, which has been getting a lot of buzz lately. I'd heard it's great for group dinners and also good for a few drinks with friends. As soon as we got to the front of the shop, we could feel the buzzing energy spilling out onto the street. We walked in full of anticipation, and the lively atmosphere hit us right from the entrance.

Waiting is basically guaranteed here—but this is a real Hyangnam gem worth every minute of it.

Where is Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi Hyangnam Branch? Parking and hours

Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi Hyangnam Branch sits right across from the Nobrand building in Hyangnam 2 District, so it was really easy to find. Parking is free for 2 hours if you use the building's basement lot or the Nobrand parking tower right next door. I parked in the Nobrand tower and it was super convenient.

According to Naver Place, the restaurant is open daily from 4:30 PM to 11:50 PM, with last order at 11:00 PM, so keep that in mind if you're going late. The interior had wooden tables, benches, and chimney flues hanging over each table—full of that cozy charcoal-grill vibe. It felt homey yet lively, exactly the kind of old-school spot perfect for drinks with friends, and it was clean and well-kept, so we could enjoy our meal in a good mood.

How long is the weekday evening wait at Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi?

Even on a weekday evening, several groups were already waiting ahead of us when we arrived. I guess that's what makes a famous restaurant famous. Thankfully they use the Catch Table waitlist system, so we could wait comfortably.

Free drinks corner for waiting guests

And thoughtfully, they had free drinks prepared for waiting guests. Thanks to that, the wait didn't feel too long at all. Little touches like this really do make you feel good.

What we ordered: the two-person jjokgalbi set in three flavors, seafood noodles and pork skin

As soon as we sat down we ordered the jjokgalbi (pork rib cuts) two-person set in three flavors—salt, seasoned, and spicy—and chose the cauldron seafood hand-torn noodle soup to go with it. We also added pork skin as a side. We figured we'd go all out.

After ordering, the basic side dishes came out—salad, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), pickled onions, and several sauces. Disposable gloves and mini tongs were hanging on the table too, so we were fully ready to tear into the jjokgalbi.

From the jjokgalbi to the seafood noodles to the pork skin, every single dish was a work of art!

Salt, seasoned or spicy jjokgalbi — which flavor tasted best?

After a while, the pre-cooked jjokgalbi went onto the charcoal grill. Since it comes already over 80% cooked, we just had to finish it off briefly and could eat right away. It only took about 1-2 minutes per side, which was super convenient.

We started with the salt-flavored jjokgalbi, and it had a subtle smoky char with a clean, savory taste that was outstanding. The meat was so tender that it just slid off the bone. Thanks to their patented aging method, there was zero gamey smell—just clean flavor.

Next was the sweet and savory seasoned jjokgalbi! This is genuinely a flavor that everyone, regardless of age or taste preference, would like. The sauce wasn't too heavy but paired so well with the ribs that I kept reaching for more. I could see why this place is trending right now.

Lastly, the fiery spicy jjokgalbi wasn't an artificial capsaicin heat but a clean, sharp spiciness, which I appreciated. Dipping it into the spicy sauce felt like it melted all my stress away. I really felt like I'd found a genuine jjokgalbi gem!

Cauldron seafood hand-torn noodle soup with a whole blue crab

The cauldron seafood hand-torn noodle soup that came with the set was another star of this restaurant. Inside the large iron cauldron was an entire crab, along with clams, zucchini, and peppers—the seafood was seriously generous.

Tearing noodle dough into the cauldron

Once the broth started boiling, they tore off pieces of hand-torn noodle dough directly into it, and the chewy texture was really good. Apparently the dough is made with squid ink and apple extract, which I think is why it was extra chewy and delicious. The broth was refreshing yet spicy-savory, cutting through the greasiness of the meat perfectly as a finishing dish.

Was the extra grilled pork skin worth adding?

The pork skin we added as an extra didn't disappoint either. Grilled golden-brown over the charcoal and dipped into bean powder, it was the ultimate chewy, savory combo. It was perfect to have as a palate cleanser after all the jjokgalbi.

Not just great taste—thoughtful attention to every guest too!
