Japanese subway-themed pork cutlet spot in Dongtan: Insaeng Donkatsu

An interior that looks like a Japanese subway station

Insaeng Donkatsu catches your eye from outside right away.

There's a subway station sign and red plastic chairs outside, so it really feels like you're standing in front of a Japanese subway station! Step inside and the vibe gets even more legit.

There's a subway line map, hanging straps, and station signs — the whole place is decked out in a retro Japanese subway concept. It's not just a few props here and there; the entire restaurant is tied together into one theme, so it's fun just to look around.

We ordered the basic pork cutlet (sauce on the side), the Insaeng Jjamppong, and handmade fried shrimp.

Basic pork cutlet: what happened when we asked for sauce on the side

Even the basic pork cutlet comes out pretty big. It arrives with rice, salad, and pickled radish, and we asked for the sauce on the side. The breading was super crispy! There's a lotus root chip on top of the cutlet too, which adds a nice visual touch.

We asked for the sauce on the side, but then poured all of it on right away haha. Can't resist eating pork cutlet soaked juicy in sauce, ha ha. The meat was nice and thick, and the portion was generous, so even the basic option felt satisfying.

Insaeng Jjamppong: the seafood noodle soup is no side dish

And the Insaeng Jjamppong I liked even more than expected! I figured jjamppong at a pork cutlet restaurant would feel like an afterthought, but not at all. The bowl itself is huge and packed with broth.

It's not just noodle-heavy — there are big shrimp, squid, meat, and all sorts of vegetables loaded in generously. You keep scooping things up with your spoon, ha ha. The noodles were nice and chewy with the broth soaked in well, and the red broth was spicy and rich — really tasty.

Eating the crispy pork cutlet, then taking a sip of the hot, spicy jjamppong broth — what a great combo! Ordering the pork cutlet and jjamppong together was definitely the right call.

Handmade fried shrimp (ebi fry)

We also ordered the handmade fried shrimp as a side. It comes with two long fried shrimp, and the breading has a rough, textured look that looks crispy just from seeing it. It really was crispy on the outside and the shrimp inside was nice and springy. Even with all that pork cutlet and jjamppong, there was still room for the fried shrimp somehow, ha ha. Great for dipping in sauce and eating one at a time.

On our way out, we noticed a 2nd anniversary thank-you discount event was going on. Monday Shrimp Oil Pasta ₩11,900, Tuesday Porcini Cream Pasta ₩11,900, Wednesday Shrimp Spicy Cream Pasta ₩11,900, and Thursday Insaeng Donkatsu ₩9,900 — a different discounted menu item designated for each day of the week. We visited on a Friday, unfortunately (?), ha ha.

Is Insaeng Donkatsu Dongtan Mokdong Branch worth a visit?

I went to Dongtan for pork cutlet and ended up leaving stuffed with jjamppong and handmade fried shrimp too! Best of all, it's not just about the food — the interior, done up like an actual Japanese subway station, made just looking around the place fun too. The pork cutlet was crispy with a generous portion, and the Insaeng Jjamppong was especially satisfying with all that seafood and meat packed in.
