On days when I'm craving eel, I think of places where I can eat plenty of it. This time I visited Songnim Bok Jangeo's unlimited freshwater eel direct branch in Siheung Baegot!! Eel can feel too pricey to eat freely sometimes, but the fact that you can enjoy unlimited freshwater eel here really caught my eye. If you love eel, it's a place worth visiting at least once.

Signage explaining the 2-hour time limit and how to grill eel

The time limit is 2 hours, and there's a guide on how to grill eel well, which should be handy for first-time visitors!!

Grilling the freshwater eel yourself: how does it taste?

When I ordered and got the eel, the flesh was plump and looked appetizing just to see. Since you grill it yourself, there's also the fun of watching it turn golden brown!!

The eel was cut into bite-sized pieces and grilled golden on both sides — crispy outside, moist inside, with that distinctive savory eel aroma really coming through.

Self-serve bar at Songnim Bok Jangeo: white kimchi, pickled onions and lettuce

One thing I especially liked about Songnim Bok Jangeo was being able to freely use extra side dishes from the self-serve bar. If a side dish ran low, I could just go grab more myself without feeling awkward — very convenient.

While eating eel, you sometimes need more side dishes or vegetables to go with it, and having the self-serve bar meant I could just grab as much as I needed right away. Mixing and matching with the eel to suit my taste made things even more comfortable~

A lot of people like eating meat or eel wrapped in lettuce, right? I'm one of those wrap people, so I was glad there was lettuce!

The pickled onions and white kimchi (baek-kimchi) went really well with the eel~

Salt, sauce and how to pace your eel refills

Dipping it in salt for a plain, clean taste was delicious, and eating it with the prepared sauce gave a different flavor altogether. The eel itself is so savory that it was plenty tasty even on its own.

What I especially liked was that since it's unlimited refills, you can just order more when you run low. Rather than grilling a huge batch from the start, it was better to grill just enough to eat and enjoy it warm right away.

Eating only eel can get a little heavy after a while, but pairing it with side dishes and vegetables made it much cleaner to enjoy. Piling a side on top of a piece of eel, I kept reaching for more!!
