Chueotang and grilled mackerel table setting at Mokgam-dong Seolak Chueotang

A Siheung restaurant recommendation near Mulwang Reservoir: Mokgam-dong Seolak Chueotang. I came out to Mulwang Reservoir with my parents, and it happened to be lunchtime and we were hungry! Looking for somewhere that covers both taste and health, I visited Seolak Chueotang near Mulwang Lake.

After a bowl of hot chueotang (loach soup) and golden-brown grilled fish, I walked out feeling like I'd had a full restorative meal 💪 This post covers everything from the menu to my visit review of this Siheung Mokgam / Mulwang Reservoir restaurant, Seolak Chueotang.

Spacious parking area at Seolak Chueotang's Mulwang Reservoir main branch

Among the restaurants around Mulwang Lake, where weekends usually mean a parking war, this place has a spacious lot and a staff member who helps guide you in, so even new drivers should have no trouble parking :)

Entrance to Seolak Chueotang with TV appearance signage

Apparently it's also been featured on quite a few TV shows, like Saeng Saeng Jeongbo and Today N! Maybe that's why it was packed with diners even at lunchtime. It's open from 10 AM to 9 PM with no break time in between, so it's great for dropping by whenever you want, no pressure :)

Why Seolak Chueotang works for older parents: elevator to the second floor

Interior of Seolak Chueotang spanning the 1st and 2nd floors

The restaurant is spread across two spacious floors, so it never felt cramped! What I especially liked was that there's an elevator installed. When visiting with elderly parents or anyone with mobility issues, not having to worry about stairs made this feel like a really thoughtful place!

Neatly arranged side dishes with cabbage salad and lotus root

The basic side dishes were kkakdugi, kimchi, cabbage salad, lotus root, and sirajitnamul (dried radish greens)! Clean, neat flavors, like something out of a proper Korean set meal. Another plus: you can take as much as you want from the self-serve bar if you run out.

What we ordered was the house signature — chueotang and grilled mackerel!

Sotbap (pot rice) served instead of regular rice at Seolak Chueotang

Instead of regular rice, it comes as sotbap (pot rice), which makes the rice taste even better~ Pour hot water in after you finish the rice and end the meal with a savory sungnyung (scorched rice water) — perfect finish 🍚

A bowl of chueotang bubbling in an earthenware pot

Just the sight of the chueotang bubbling away in the earthenware pot makes you feel warmer already!

Thick chueotang broth with siraegi (dried radish greens) visible

This is a different level from store-bought chueotang — thick, rich broth 👍 No gamey or fishy smell at all, and the long-simmered siraegi (dried radish greens) are infused with a savory perilla seed flavor that clings to your palate in the best way.

Rice mixed into chueotang

Mixing a bowl of rice into the hot earthenware pot — there's no stopping once you start, I cleaned the whole bowl! The temperature swings lately have had me feeling off, but one bowl of chueotang fully recharged me 💪

Wood-fired mackerel served as one whole fish

A whole grilled mackerel served at the table

Unlike most restaurants that serve half a fish, here you get a whole mackerel, generously sized. And it's a pretty big one too 👀

Golden-brown surface of the wood-fired grilled mackerel

Since it's grilled in a wood-fired oven, the outside is crispy while the inside stays moist 👍 Grilling fish at home means cleaning it, dealing with the smell, and it's not easy to get that golden-brown finish — so being able to enjoy it this easily is such a treat 👏

A piece of mackerel flesh placed on top of rice

Plump mackerel flesh piled onto rice, eaten alongside the chueotang, is a fantastic combination 👏 The grilled mackerel was just as satisfying as the main dish — ordering the grilled fish set alone would also make for a hearty meal!

Is Seolak Chueotang worth it for a family meal by Mulwang Reservoir?
