Exterior of MUG and its spacious parking area

After finishing a delicious meal nearby with a friend, our second stop was 'MUG,' known far and wide as one of Ulsan's big cafés.

The parking lot is so wide and open that even a beginner driver could pull in without any stress! (Not saying I'm a beginner driver, hehe — I drive great.) It's a great spot to swing by for a drive after a meal, so accessibility is excellent 💯

Located at 90 Hyangsandagae-ro, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, this Eonyang bakery café is a large culture-meets-café space with a huge parking area and a free exhibition space inside 🫶 The signature 'MUK Black Latte' anchors a wide drink menu, and the daily-baked bread lineup makes it one of the more varied Eonyang café dessert spots.

Apparently on weekends the outdoor space fills with bubbles for an even more fairy-tale-like scene, but since I visited on a weekday lunch I sadly missed it,, ㅠ

A building inspired by charred wood and surviving trees

The site the café stands on carries a painful history — a major wildfire swept through here back in 2013. The architect was deeply inspired by the trees that survived and endured the fire, and designed the space to honor and remember the land's past.

The moment I stepped inside, instead of exhaust fumes (ha, just a joke..) the whole place was filled with the warm smell of baked bread. Living up to its reputation as an Eonyang bakery café, the bakery showcase was packed with a huge variety of desserts.

They use good butter!!!! Amazing!!! Love it 🤍

MUG's bread display case and variety of desserts

With such a huge variety of bread, I agonized for a while before picking salt bread — the most basic, but the best test of fundamentals — and a savory cheese bread! If I hadn't already been full, I probably would've gone for the signature dessert too, sniff sniff.

I'll try these next time,, for sure!

Signature MUG black latte and lemon citron tea

Since there were two of us, here's what we ordered to drink.

MUG's signature black latte and lemon citron tea
  • MUG black latte: A striking signature drink even just by looks — visually enjoyable, and the smooth, nutty finish was excellent. You could immediately tell why this is their signature menu item.
  • Lemon citron tea: Refreshingly bright and clean, it cut through the heaviness after the meal and paired perfectly with the bread.

Salt bread and cheese bread at MUG

Plate of salt bread and cheese bread at MUG

A textbook example of crispy outside, soft inside! The salt bread was a fantastic Eonyang café dessert — the more you chewed, the more the salty butter flavor spread. The cheese bread was packed with rich, savory cheese all the way through, the kind of thing you want to savor slowly.

The salt bread is seriously huge,, and if you want it warm, you can heat it up yourself ✔️✔️ (self-service microwave)
