Sushi Hwa is a flame-seared sushi (bulchobap, direct-fire sushi) specialist located right in the middle of Bongridan-gil in Gimhae. Coming from Gimhae Jungbu Police Station and heading straight in, it's easy to find.

Where to park near Sushi Hwa

No dedicated parking lot at the restaurant! There are Bongridan-gil Public Parking Lots 1, 2, 3 about a 5-minute walk away, so use those :) I visited around 2pm on a weekday and even then there were barely any spots left in the public lots ,,

Sushi Hwa sits right in the middle of Bongridan-gil in Gimhae — from Gimhae Jungbu Police Station, just head straight in and you'll find it easily!

Sushi Hwa seating: does solo dining work?

The restaurant was quite spacious, and even so the tables weren't packed together, so it felt comfortable and airy 🤍 There were tables for 2, 4, and even 6, plus seats for solo diners! It looked like a good spot to come alone for a simple meal.

Sushi Hwa menu and how ordering works

Menu 🍽️ There's no paper menu — you order through the kiosk. It's mainly a flame-seared sushi place, but they also serve raw sushi, eel rice bowl, chicken karaage rice bowl, cold soba, and tempura. There's even a kids' flame-seared sushi set, so I thought it'd be a great spot for families ➿

I ordered the flame-seared sushi set (₩15,000), the raw sushi set (₩15,000), and 5 pieces of wagyu sushi plus 1 fried tofu sushi (₩7,000)!

What every Sushi Hwa set includes, down to the frozen blueberries

Let me introduce the set's base components first haha. Pickled radish and ginger, wasabi, blueberries, salad, and your choice of udon or soba all come along with it. The interesting part is they give you frozen blueberries? Whenever the sushi started to feel a bit rich, popping one of these sweet-tart bites in cut right through it, and I was totally into it :) The salad had a yuzu dressing, and I ordered one udon and one buckwheat soba — personally I thought the hot, ingredient-packed udon was tastier!

Flame-seared sushi set, 10 pieces for 15,000 won

Sushi Hwa's flame-seared sushi set comes with fried tofu sushi, egg, raw shrimp, scallop, salmon abura, cuttlefish, and spicy shrimp (spicy sauce, garlic sauce), plus wagyu (spicy, garlic sauce) — 10 pieces total. With that smoky char and so many pieces coated in sauce, each one tasted noticeably different. You can also choose spicy, garlic, or half-and-half sauce — I went with half-and-half. The spicy sauce is pretty hot, so if you're weak to spice, definitely go half-and-half~~

Raw sushi set, 10 pieces for 15,000 won

I felt like it'd be a waste to only try the flame-seared stuff, so I ordered raw sushi too! The lineup is similar, but includes tuna, soy-marinated shrimp, and salmon. It wasn't fishy at all, so even people who can't eat raw fish would probably enjoy it 🤍 That said, personally, I think the flame-seared sushi was tastier because of that smoky flavor haha.

Wagyu 5 pieces plus fried tofu sushi for 7,000 won

The wagyu sushi also comes coated in sauce. If you feel like sashimi alone isn't quite enough, I'd recommend ordering the wagyu or beef brisket alongside it. The meat comes out warm, so it's a fun, different kind of bite to enjoy.

Sushi Hwa verdict and what to order

Writing this post is making me want to eat it again haha. Overall the food was clean and well-made, and the owner was kind too. That said, ordering just one sushi set might leave you slightly hungry, so I'd recommend adding one more side dish! I think I'll come back whenever I'm craving sushi loaded with that smoky flame flavor 🤍 If you're looking for a good lunch spot on Bongridan-gil, I recommend Sushi Hwa.
