Sinmae-dong, Daegu galbi restaurant: 6 servings for two, Dugeundugeun

In short

Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi is a charcoal-grilled pork galbi restaurant in Sinmae-dong (Sizi), Suseong-gu, Daegu. Two of us ordered the marinated pork galbi at 12,000 won for a 200g serving and worked through 6 servings, and the free spicy soft tofu stew, fried egg and perilla-packed fresh kimchi salad were the parts we remember most. Staff at Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi changed the grill plate again and again, so nothing tasted burnt right to the last piece.

Marinated pork galbi grilling over charcoal at Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi

Today I'm writing about my visit to Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi in Sinmae-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu. Eating out has gotten really expensive lately, so the price caught my eye right away — marinated pork galbi is ₩12,000 for one 200g serving.

Spoiler: the two of us polished off 6 servings of pork galbi haha. The meat was delicious, but the free soft tofu stew and fried egg, the generous side dishes, and the friendly staff all added up to a really satisfying overall experience.

Where is Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi and what are its hours?

Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi is at 69 Nobyeon-ro, Suseong-gu, Daegu, about 736m from Exit 2 of Sinmae Station. It's open daily from 11:30 to 22:30, with a break time from 15:00 to 17:00.

Storefront entrance with the charcoal galbi specialty restaurant sign

The sign clearly says charcoal galbi specialty restaurant, so it wasn't hard to find. I visited in the evening, and the lights were bright enough to spot from a distance.

The lunch special runs from 11:30 to 14:00, and it's noted that it's not available on weekends or holidays.

Is the dining room spacious and clean?

The inside of Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi was more spacious and clean than I expected. The tables weren't cramped, and each table has its own charcoal grill setup, so it seemed like a good spot for family meals or larger groups.

Best of all, the restroom was kept clean too. At a barbecue place, restroom cleanliness matters just as much as the dining area, and overall the impression was tidy.

The self-serve corner at Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi

There's a self-serve corner set up on one side of the restaurant. But honestly, we barely used it.

When the staff first set our table, they brought out plenty of side dishes, so we hardly ever needed to go refill anything during the meal. I really appreciated that they made sure we had enough from the start.

Fresh kimchi salad full of perilla leaves, and the rest of the side dishes

The basic side dishes at Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi included lettuce, garlic, kimchi, and pickled vegetables — all good pairings for grilled meat. My favorite among them was the geotjeori (fresh spicy salad)!

It had plenty of sliced perilla leaves mixed in, which was exactly my taste. Usually when a barbecue place serves scallion salad, my partner doesn't touch it and I end up eating it all myself. But here, my perilla-leaf-loving partner actually ate the vegetable side dish well.

Wrapping a bite of meat with the salad balanced out the sweetness of the marinated galbi nicely — a great combo.

Marinated pork galbi: 200g for 12,000 won

We ordered the signature menu item: marinated pork galbi (dwaeji yangnyeom galbi).

200g per serving, ₩12,000

Plate of marinated pork galbi served with king oyster mushrooms

When the meat first arrived, the marinade was already soaked in nicely, and king oyster mushrooms came along with it. And true to its name, it's grilled directly over charcoal rather than gas. Once the charcoal came out and the grill plate went on, it finally felt like a proper barbecue outing :)

Does marinated galbi burn on the charcoal grill?

Marinated galbi is a dish that can burn quickly if you're not careful with the grilling, because of the sauce. But the staff at Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi kept walking around checking the grill plates.

They swapped them out when needed on their own, and if they were too busy to notice, they came quickly whenever we mentioned it. Thanks to that, we could eat comfortably all the way through without any burnt taste. The owner and staff were genuinely kind overall.

How two people finished 6 servings of galbi

We meant to eat a reasonable amount at first, but... grilling, eating, ordering more, grilling again — before we knew it, the two of us had eaten 6 servings of pork galbi haha.

The marinade wasn't overly intense in flavor, but grilled over charcoal it kept us reaching for more, and with the smoky char aroma added in, it went really well with rice too.

I heard the owner's husband runs a butcher shop, which might explain why the meat felt a cut above. I can't verify the quality claim myself, but based on what we actually ate, satisfaction with the meat was high.

The free soft tofu stew is worth ordering rice for

An unexpected favorite at Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi was the free soft tofu stew (sundubu-jjigae). It arrived piping hot in a stone pot, bubbling so intensely you could practically feel the heat just from a photo. It's genuinely hot, so be careful with your first bite!

Rather than a typical plain soft tofu stew, this one had a chili oil kick to it, giving it a slightly spicy jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup)-like flavor. It was way more delicious than I expected.

I'm a rice person at heart, so I ended up ordering a separate bowl of rice to eat with the stew, and it paired perfectly. Taking a bite of meat, then a hot spoonful of spicy broth, then a bite of rice — it felt like a complete meal!

A fried egg on the house as well

Along with the soft tofu stew, a fried egg came out for free as well. With the fried egg added, ordering a bowl of rice to eat alongside the other side dishes felt even better.

When these little free extras keep showing up on top of the meat, it just feels more generous overall :) It seemed like a nice, no-fuss item for kids to enjoy too if visiting as a family.

On top of that, a cucumber salad also came out for free, but we were too busy grilling and eating to snap a photo... We enjoyed that one too!

Vinegar and mustard packets under the ordering tablet

There was an ordering tablet on the table, and underneath it I noticed disposable packets of vinegar and mustard. Rather than a shared bottle everyone dips into, these were individually packaged, which felt more hygienic.

Having them ready at each table so you can add them right when eating cold noodles, depending on your taste, felt like a thoughtful touch.

We wanted cold noodles to finish, but…

Normally you're supposed to wrap up a galbi meal with cold noodles. But since we'd already eaten 6 servings of galbi plus rice and soft tofu stew, we were too full to manage cold noodles too haha.

Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi has

Water-based cold noodles (mul-naengmyeon) ₩7,000 Spicy mixed cold noodles (bibim-naengmyeon) ₩7,000 Kimchi noodle soup (kimchimari guksu) ₩7,000

available. I'm especially curious about the kimchi noodle soup, so next time I'd love to try either the cold noodles or that when I come back.

Yogurt to end the meal :)

Near the register, there was dessert yogurt and candy set out. After a filling galbi meal, walking out with a yogurt in hand felt like the perfect finish to a barbecue outing haha.

If visiting with kids, grabbing one to sip on the way out would probably be fun for them too. We did the same, sipping on our yogurts as we headed out :)

The Naver review event running at the restaurant

At the time of our visit, there was a Naver receipt review event in progress. Posting a photo review earned you a choice of one bottle of soju or beer, or two beverages.

It was limited to one participation per table. Since event details can change depending on when you visit, I'd recommend double-checking at the restaurant if you're planning to take part.

Is Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi worth a visit? Final verdict

Visiting in person, this turned out to be more than just a reasonably priced pork galbi place — the side dishes, the free extras, and the staff service all came together to make it a satisfying experience overall.

Three things stuck with me in particular:

  • The salad loaded with perilla leaves
  • The spicy, jjamppong-like free soft tofu stew
  • The charcoal-grilled marinated pork galbi

They set the table with generous side dishes from the start, and the staff kept an eye on the grill plates throughout the meal, so the two of us could comfortably work through 6 servings of galbi. Next time, I want to come back and finally try the kimchi noodle soup or cold noodles we were too full for this time!
