Broth-style kal-nakji with pork bossam near Suwon Station: Daseon
In short
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is a 25-plus-year-old kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant about a 10-minute walk from Exits 7 and 8 of Suwon Station. The writer ordered the dasean kal-nakji (spicy octopus noodle soup) for two in the broth style with the basic spice level, plus a plate of boiled pork, and found the heat about equal to Shin Ramyun with a steady stream of clams and octopus. For a filling meal, go for kal-nakji plus bossam; for value, the set menu is the better pick.

Today I visited Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, famous as one of Suwon's best kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) spots. It's been around for more than 25 years and it's the kind of place that makes you want to come back for more. Let's get into the review!

Outside the restaurant

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is within a 10-minute walk of Exits 7 and 8 of Suwon Station. It's been a fixture in Suwon for a long time, and I noticed a lot of office workers and couples on dates stopping by too.
Inside and table setting

The interior has several four-person tables. We got there early, but by lunchtime the place was packed — clearly a local favorite. Turns out it's even been featured on TV shows like 'Amazing Saturday' and 'Live Today.'

Each table came set with a bowl, pepper, sauce, wet wipes, and a water cup.

The basic side dishes were barley rice, kimchi, and spicy radish salad — you mix the rice with gochujang (spicy red pepper paste) for a tasty bite. It was great to nibble on while waiting for our order, nutty and delicious.
Menu and ordering

The menu covers everything from lunch to dinner — daseon kal-nakji, kalguksu, set meals, jang-kalguksu, dumpling kalguksu, bibim kalguksu, dumpling soup, dumplings, and bossam (boiled pork) — and everything is available for takeout. There's also a set meal for good value. We ordered the daseon kal-nakji for two in broth style with basic spice, plus a plate of bossam.
Plate of bossam

The bossam arrived first — tender, no gamey smell, and just delicious. I hadn't had good bossam in a while, but this kept going down even after I was full. Paired with the kimchi they gave us, the flavor was incredible.
Daseon kal-nakji for two, broth style

We wanted to enjoy the broth too, so we ordered it broth style. It was loaded with clams, octopus, and vegetables.

The portion was generous for two, and the chewy kalguksu noodles looked mouth-watering just sitting there.

They really don't skimp on ingredients, and one bite told me exactly why everyone calls this a must-visit spot. The clams were well cleaned, and no matter how much octopus we scooped out, more kept coming.

How spicy is the basic level?
The basic spice level was just about equal to Shin Ramyun. I like spicy food, so next time I'm bumping it up a notch. The broth was clean and refreshing — this would make a great hangover cure the next day too.

The chewy noodles left a strong impression, and this is the kind of place I'd want to come back to whenever I'm craving kalguksu :) The broth style was so good it made me curious about the thicker, less soupy version too.
Final thoughts
Today's visit to Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, one of Suwon's best restaurants, was a good one — you can grab a quick lunch or settle in for a proper dinner with drinks, and either way you leave full and satisfied. The staff were kind, and even the kimchi and spicy radish salad on the side were delicious. If I have plans in Suwon again, this is the place I'd confidently bring people to.
We ordered the kal-nakji with a plate of bossam because we wanted to eat until we were stuffed, but if you're going for value, the set meal is the way to go. If you're looking for a date spot near Suwon Station, a solid lunch place, a good office-worker lunch, or a kalguksu restaurant near Suwon Station, give this one a try.
