I went to Paju with my family and heard there was a really good dumpling place, so we stopped by. I'd heard there's usually a long wait, and sure enough, plenty of people were waiting that day too.
Still, since it's such a well-known spot, we waited with high expectations — and after eating, I understood exactly why there's always a line. The dumplings were delicious, and we all really enjoyed the hot mandu hot pot together as a family.

How long is the wait, and the nostalgic snack corner
At Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu, you put your name down for a wait as soon as you walk in. This photo was actually taken on our way out after eating, and even though it was a late lunch, there was still a wait...

In the waiting area, there's a variety of nostalgic snacks set out. You can snack on them while you wait, or save them for dessert after your meal. There's quite a selection, which brought back memories, and the kids got excited picking out their favorites too. This kind of small thoughtful touch was really nice — it made the wait feel less boring.

A few menu items, like mandu soup and mandu hot pot, are also available for takeout. Quite a few people were picking up takeout orders while I was there. It seems like a great option whether you want to eat comfortably at home, need a quick meal on a busy day, or are having guests over.

It was quite crowded since we came during a busy hour — clearly living up to its reputation as a popular dumpling spot with so many people dining in.

There's a self-service corner and kids' tableware. At the self-service corner, you'll find broth and side dishes you can help yourself to more of.

Here's the menu at Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu — just looking at the photos gave off such a clean, well-put-together feeling. After going back and forth, the hot pot at the next table looked so good haha, so I ended up ordering that too.

What does mandu jjabagi taste like, and how to stir rice into it
This is mandu jjabagi (dumplings simmered in spicy broth). It's a spicy yukgaejang (spicy beef soup)-style broth with light, clean-tasting Pyeongyang mandu inside. I really love yukgaejang and eat it often, but I never expected it to pair so well with dumplings.

Since it's called Pyeongyang mandu, I expected only a light, clean broth, but paired with the spicy yukgaejang-style soup, it was actually even better. The spicy, rich broth flavor was absolutely amazing, and the clean-tasting dumplings blended perfectly with the soup.

I mixed a generous amount of rice in too. With hot broth and rice mixed together, it just went down so easily. If you love spicy, rich yukgaejang, you have to try the mandu jjabagi.

Visiting with kids: the children's mandu soup
This is the kids' mandu soup I ordered for our little one at home. The broth wasn't salty and had just the right seasoning, so it was easy for my child to eat, and the dumplings were mild too, so there was nothing overwhelming about it. Rice comes with it too, so you can mix it into the soup for a heartier meal. Since the flavor isn't strong or spicy, it seems like a great order for anyone visiting with kids. I really love menus like this for children!!

Mandu hot pot with an extra portion of kalguksu
Here's the mandu hot pot. Plenty of other tables were ordering it too. It's nice that you get to eat vegetables in a healthy way with this too.

The pot came out packed with a variety of mushrooms, meat, and vegetables. Every single ingredient looked fresh, and it looked absolutely delicious just to look at, right?

It seems like the dumplings are 4 per person. We added one more order of knife noodles on top.

Once the broth comes to a boil, you add in the meat and vegetables to cook.
There's fun in picking through all the different ingredients! As they cook one by one, the broth just keeps getting more flavorful — this broth is seriously insane! It has a deep, rich taste from the very start, and simmering the ingredients in it makes the soup even more delicious over time.

And the dumplings, need I say more. They're packed with tofu, so they're really light and clean-tasting. Honestly I'm not much of a tofu person, so I didn't expect much at first. But these dumplings were oddly delicious. They're light but never bland, and the more you chew, the more that nutty flavor comes through — I kept reaching for more.

Dip the meat and vegetables in soy sauce and it's absolute heaven.

And then the knife noodles! If it seems a bit salty, just add more broth. They simmer for about 5 minutes, and since the broth itself is so delicious, the noodles turned out amazing too — we ate until we were completely full.

Dessert misutgaru and the outdoor seating area
At the end, we finished up with misutgaru (roasted grain drink) and snacks for dessert! A cup of nutty, sweet misutgaru paired with the nostalgic snacks was the perfect way to cleanse the palate after the meal.

There's also an outdoor rest area where you can relax for a bit. Rather than jumping straight into the car after eating, it was nice to sit outside for a while and take our time. If you're visiting with kids, it seems like a good spot to get some fresh air after the meal too.
Is Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu worth a family trip?
A family meal out at Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu in Paju. From the light and clean Pyeongyang mandu to the spicy mandu jjabagi to the generous mandu hot pot, every dish was delicious. Adding knife noodles to that rich, deep broth made the meal especially satisfying. There are dishes great for kids too, and with convenient parking and a comfortable waiting area, this is a place I'd recommend for a family meal out.
