Paju mandu restaurant, 51,000 won lunch for three: Bubyeokjeong

In short

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is a Pyeongyang-style mandu (dumpling) and makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurant on Jimok-ro in Paju, Gyeonggi. On a weekday visit at 1pm with parents, one Pyeongyang bibim makguksu, two Pyeongyang mandu soups and a half plate of arongsatae (beef shank) suyuk came to 51,000 won for three, and five flat mandu left everyone completely full. The seasoning at Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is mild rather than salty, making it an easy choice for a family meal out with parents.

There are so many good mandu (dumpling) spots in Paju, but I tried the one that's most popular right now — Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu!

I work nearby, so I went during my weekday lunch break.

I hate waiting, so I went past 1pm on purpose. Still had a wait though! This place is seriously popular...

Where is Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu, and where do you park?

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is on Jimok-ro in Paju, and it's such a big place you honestly can't miss it walking by. It's close to Paju landmarks like Simhaksan Mountain, Lotte Outlet, Shinsegae Outlet, and Heyri Art Village!

Maybe because the location is so good, it seemed to draw not just local Paju folks but visitors too. It's especially known as a go-to restaurant near Paju Lotte Outlet.

In Paju most people drive, so parking really matters — but no worries here. There's plenty of parking right in front, and get this, there's even a second lot!

A wait even after 1pm on a weekday: free snacks and misugaru

There was still a wait at Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu even past 1pm on a weekday. But they've set up a little corner where you can snack while you wait.

I really hate waiting, but wait — they set up a corner just for people in line! It kept me from getting bored. Nice touch 👍

Various snacks, plus misugaru (roasted grain drink).

Since we were going to eat a full meal, I just had one small cup, but it felt like a nice little appetizer haha.

Takeout mandu at Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu, same price as dine-in

There's also a takeout section at the entrance of Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu. The takeout price was the same as eating in the restaurant.

There were packaged products at the entrance too, and they looked great to buy for camping trips or as a meal kit at home.

What three people ordered for 51,000 won

Finally seated! Even though we'd waited a long time, the staff were all so kind that we got a warm welcome anyway.

Here's what my parents and I ordered.

  • Dad got the Pyeongyang bibim makguksu
  • Mom and I got Pyeongyang mandu soup
  • A half plate of arongsatae (beef shank) suyuk to share
  • Total: ₩51,000

The food didn't take long to come out. A lot of people around us were having hot pot, but since I had to head back to work, I like keeping lunch simple. I'll try the hot pot on a weekend when I have more time!

Pyeongyang bibim makguksu: cold buckwheat noodles, mild seasoning

A bowl of Pyeongyang bibim makguksu

100% handmade sauce, pure buckwheat noodles. The mild sauce and clean buckwheat flavor went really well together.

Pairing a non-spicy dish or two with the bibim noodles made it taste even better. When I eat out — especially on a lunch break from work — I try to avoid anything too intense. But I was surprised how easy it was on my stomach; must be the handmade sauce and buckwheat noodles.

I ended up stealing bites of Dad's bibim makguksu the whole time. Eating mandu together with the bibim noodles is genuinely delicious, you should try it!

Pyeongyang mandu soup, two bowls for the parents

A bowl of Pyeongyang mandu soup

Mild Pyeongyang mandu and a broth simmered with 1++ grade Korean beef, a warm bowl of mandu soup. Now that summer's over and the weather's getting cooler, this is a dish I'll want more and more!

It looked like there were about five mandu in there, and since they're flat mandu I figured I wouldn't get too full. But after finishing all five I thought I was going to burst haha.

Cross-section of flat mandu in the soup

I thought there wasn't much filling, but I guess it's just spread out wide. So, so full..

Mandu soup broth with dumplings

You know how the basic version is always the best? I love pyeongyang naengmyeon, and it turns out I love Pyeongyang mandu soup too! Basically, if 'Pyeongyang' is in the name, expect a mild flavor that somehow keeps pulling you back in. Usually food outside is too salty, but this one had just the right seasoning for us — my mom was happy with it too!

Arongsatae (beef shank) suyuk, half plate

Half plate of arongsatae suyuk with chives

Arongsatae cuts are seriously pricey. Top-grade arongsatae wrapped in chives — you can imagine how good that is.

Drizzle on the sauce that comes with it,

wrap it in chives, dip it in more sauce — the arongsatae was really good either way. And you can order just a half plate if you don't want too much!

Great for a family meal out too! If you like clean, mild flavors, give Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu a try.
