Chuncheon pork cutlet restaurant: hire katsu soba set, Jeongseong

In short

Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Hyoja Branch is a Japanese-style tonkatsu (pork cutlet) restaurant near the back gate of Gangwon National University in Chuncheon, Gangwon (222 Seobudaeseong-ro). The order was kimchi cheese nabe with extra udon noodles plus a hire katsu (fried pork fillet) and soba set, and the portions felt large even for a grown man, with the katsu crisp outside and juicy inside and a generous pile of soba noodles. Both dishes came out above average, so Jeongseong Katsu is an easy recommendation for pork cutlet in Chuncheon.

Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Hyoja Branch is right by the back gate of Gangwon National University! There are lots of cafés and things to do nearby, so it works great for both lunch and dinner. We came here and then hit up a café nearby and even did some claw machine games afterward haha. It seems like a fairly new spot — the exterior looked really clean too.

There's a parking lot on the right side, but it tends to be crowded, so I'd recommend parking at the Dohwagol public parking lot and walking over instead. I believe it's free of charge until January 2027.

How is the kimchi cheese nabe with extra udon noodles?

Table with the kimchi cheese nabe and hire katsu set placed together

Here's the kimchi cheese nabe and hire katsu set I ordered. What surprised me when it arrived was the portion size...! It's enough for a grown man to eat comfortably. Looks pretty appetizing too, right? Hahaha.

Kimchi cheese nabe topped with cheese, served with a bowl of rice

First up, the kimchi cheese nabe~ It comes with a bowl of rice too, and the rice smelled sweet and nutty right away — they seem to use good rice. I figured it'd be a shame without udon noodles, so I added some! It's loaded with cheese, giving it a really savory flavor.

Chewy udon noodles lifted from the kimchi cheese nabe broth

The udon noodles were super chewy — it reminded me of the kimchi udon at Tudari, but leveled up with more premium touches and tonkatsu added in. The broth had a bit of a kick, which cut through the richness nicely and tasted great. I feel like I'll be craving this once winter rolls around.

Hire katsu and soba set: portion size and sauce choice

Next up is the hire katsu set~ I was craving cold buckwheat noodles but also really wanted hire katsu, so while I was debating, I spotted a set that lets you have both — sold! It comes with napa cabbage kimchi, cucumber and radish pickles, sauce, and the scallions, wasabi, and grated radish for the soba.

The hire katsu pieces were nice and round, crispy on the outside and juicy inside — delicious tonkatsu! You can see a slight pink tint in the center, which you know means fresh meat, right?! Looked amazing~~

For the tonkatsu sauce, you can choose spicy or regular — I'm a wimp with spice, so I went regular~ This place is genuinely delicious, I think I'll be coming back often. One bite in, my eyes went wide and I inhaled the rest without thinking!!!

Is the amount of soba noodles for real?! It's a ton. Dipping it into the broth, it was clean, salty-savory, and so delicious haha. Nice to get to enjoy soba like this before summer's fully gone!!!

Nearly empty plates of kimchi cheese nabe and hire katsu set

There was so much food that my companion ended up eating two of the pieces for me~?! But I still finished my plate. If you're looking for a good tonkatsu spot in Chuncheon, I highly recommend Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Hyoja Branch near Gangwon National University's back gate~ Both dishes were above average! Haven't eaten this well in a while.
