Seongbuk rice bowl restaurant: beef brisket minari at Seochon Nugak
In short
Seochon Nugak is a Korean rice bowl restaurant on Hyehwa-ro in Seongbuk, Seoul, a short walk from Hansung University Station. A married couple arrived right at the 11:00 opening and split the beef brisket minari (water dropwort) rice bowl and the shrimp and octopus rice bowl, and the deeply flavored seaweed soup, chewy octopus and tender, never-stringy minari stood out. Seochon Nugak only serves from 11:00 to 15:00 with last order at 14:00, but it is an easy, unintimidating lunch to bring anyone to.

I went on a rare date with my wife to Seochon Nugak (서촌누각) near Hansung University Station, which she loves. Since we were out, we stopped by a café near Daehak-ro first — I was only supposed to grab coffee for a sugar boost, but ended up eating bread too before we headed to the restaurant. Still, bread-stomach and rice-stomach are different, so honestly it didn't matter at all when it came to eating.

How we heard about Seochon Nugak in Seongbuk
My wife first discovered Seochon Nugak while looking for a good restaurant to take a friend to. That friend loved it so much that afterward she started going there often with her husband — hearing that made me curious too, so we went to check it out.

Open 11:00 to 15:00: a weekday lunch right at opening
Seochon Nugak is already well known among bloggers, so I wasn't surprised, but the prices and interior made it a place you could comfortably bring anyone to for lunch. I went in almost like an opening-run right at 11am, and even though it was a weekday, there were already other customers. What was really unusual was that this restaurant only operates from 11am to 3pm. Last order is at 2pm — a really short window.

Places like this are usually run by owners who aren't chasing big profits but have a craftsman's spirit — preparing only as much food as they can handle themselves, without handing it off to anyone else. If I ran a place like this, I'd probably hire staff and push to stay open through dinner...
Honestly, I really respect people who run their business this way. They don't get greedy and just prepare food properly. Places like this usually have short hours but need far longer prep time than most restaurants, spending a lot of time on ingredients — and when you actually eat it, you can taste the care put into every single ingredient, which is probably why so many customers keep coming back.
Seochon Nugak serves Korean food that's simple enough for lunch, but it feels more upscale than a typical baekban (mixed rice) place, so it's somewhere you could bring anyone and they'd be satisfied. For today's lunch, we ordered the beef brisket minari rice bowl and the shrimp octopus rice bowl.

The seaweed soup at Seochon Nugak sets the tone
I like drinking, so wherever I go I always look for a good soup. Seochon Nugak's seaweed soup wasn't just seaweed tossed into a simple broth — it had a genuinely deep flavor.

I'm great at telling whether food is delicious or not, but I'm terrible at putting it into words, so writing this isn't easy.

Beef brisket minari rice bowl: what it tastes like
So... about the beef brisket minari (water dropwort) rice bowl at Seochon Nugak, all I could think was that it was delicious. Honestly, at home I only eat what my wife cooks, so evaluating taste isn't really a thing I get to do — I feel like I've lost the ability to describe flavor.

Since my wife never reads my blog anyway, I can write freely — and honestly, this was 10 times more delicious than the food she makes me at home.

When I ate my mom's cooking, I used to complain it was too salty or too spicy. But now that I'm married, I feel like if I open my mouth I'll never get fed again or I'll just get scolded — so I think I've lost my ability to critique food altogether.

Shrimp and octopus rice bowl, loaded with octopus
Right now I'm writing this blog post and I'm supposed to be talking about the food, but since it's been a while since I've written a food post, I keep thinking about all the things piled up with my wife and want to vent about it. Let me refocus and get back to writing.
The shrimp octopus rice bowl had quite a lot of octopus in it, and the texture was really well cooked — chewy but tender — so the octopus paired really well with the rice and it was so good. The pine mushrooms and shrimp were also delicious, and the whole combination worked really well together.

Is Seochon Nugak worth it? Our verdict after sharing both bowls
My wife and I split the two dishes and shared. I personally don't love minari usually, but this wasn't the big, tough kind — it was properly trimmed to a moderate size, so the texture was great and it tasted really good. We'd already had coffee and bread at a nearby café before lunch, but the food was so good we ended up scraping our bowls clean.
I highly recommend Seochon Nugak, a Seongbuk-dong restaurant near Hansung University Station — definitely worth a visit!
