Gyeongju restaurant with herring roe yukhoe, heart egg rice: Hwangnam
In short
Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant is a Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju serving aged-kimchi pork rib stew and hanwoo yukhoe (Korean beef tartare). There was still a wait on a weekday off, so booking through Naver is worth it; the order was two portions of aged kimchi rib stew, hanwoo yukhoe topped with herring roe at 13,000 won, and furikake heart egg rice at 5,000 won. The rib meat slid off the bone and the yukhoe was seasoned just right — a filling meal with a glass of soju.

Hwangnam Dukkebi seems to always have a wait! So it's best to book ahead — I took a weekday off work to visit and there was still a line. Here's the rundown on parking, waiting, reservations, and the yukhoe (raw beef) and rib stew at this Hwangnidan-gil favorite in Gyeongju!

Where to park near Hwangnam Dukkebi in Gyeongju
Hwangnam Dukkebi is located on Hwangnidan-gil and has no parking lot of its own, so park at Hwangnam Public Parking Lot or Hwangnam Culture Center Public Parking Lot! It's also about 7 minutes on foot toward Hwangnidan-gil from the Cheomseongdae Public Parking Lot. My accommodation was close to Hwangnidan-gil, so I just parked there and walked over!

What we ordered at Hwangnam Dukkebi
Aged kimchi rib stew ₩16,900 x 2, hanwoo yukhoe (raw beef) ₩13,000, furikake heart egg rice ₩5,000, Cham soju ₩5,000. That's what I ordered — normally I'd get Chamisul, but I tried Cham, which you can only get here!

Buckwheat pancake: free with any main dish
The buckwheat pancake is ₩4,000 on its own, but it comes free when you order the rib stew or another main! What a nice appetizer to munch on while the aged kimchi rib stew is still cooking. The stir-fried kimchi side dish was also right up my alley.
Jar-aged 60-day kimchi pork rib stew, 16,900 won
This is the No. 1 best-selling dish at Hwangnam Dukkebi on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju — the aged kimchi and rib meat go together perfectly, and the kimchi was so good I polished off a whole bowl of rice. Best of all, the bones came off the ribs easily. They pulled apart so smoothly — I really liked that about this place!

They gave us tongs to pick the meat up with, and the glass noodles mixed in — one of my favorites — made it even tastier. The portion was bigger than I expected too, so I left completely full, haha.

Hanwoo yukhoe 13,000 won: herring roe on Gyeongju Millennium hanwoo
I've been obsessed with yukhoe lately — I'd actually already had some before coming here! This dish pairs herring roe with Gyeongju millennium hanwoo yukhoe, served with egg yolk, pear, and sprouts. Mix it all together well and it tastes amazing!
There's no separate sauce for the yukhoe, so once you mix it, the seasoning is already spot on as is. It goes so well with soju too! The portion felt a little small, but the price is quite reasonable, so no complaints!

Furikake heart egg rice, 5,000 won
This dish is furikake plus seaweed flakes, a heart-shaped fried egg, sesame oil, and rice. It went really well eaten alongside the rib stew! The portion was generous enough for two people to share, haha.
