Early lunch gukbap spot by Daegu Station before Gyeongju: Hanwoojang

In short

Hanwoojang is a 24-hour gukbap (rice and soup) restaurant on Gukchaebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu, right in front of Daegu Station. Before setting off for Gyeongju, an early lunch at Hanwoojang meant teuk ttaro-gukbap (deluxe spicy beef soup served with rice on the side) at 12,000 won and kkori-gomtang (oxtail soup) at 17,000 won, with huge pieces of seonji (ox blood curd), plenty of beef and a deeply savory oxtail broth. For anyone after a Korean soup with truly rich broth near Daegu Station, Hanwoojang is the answer.

Morning, morning~ This is a gukbap spot I stopped at while heading from Daegu to Gyeongju. Oh man, the broth was rich rich~~ It's close to Dongseong-ro too, so I'd recommend it whenever you want a hearty meal. Daegu Station is right in front! It was so good I have to tell you about it, let's go~

Whoa, even from outside you could smell that this was a proper gukbap place. Tons of reviews too! And it's kept its Blue Ribbon rating year after year, seriously ㄷㄷ Getting the Blue Ribbon since 2013, that's already several years running~~~ My food radar was right on the money. I figured this was the spot to have a hot bowl before heading off to Gyeongju haha.

It was a bit before lunchtime, but everyone seemed to be curing hangovers, digging into their bowls with real satisfaction. I hurried and grabbed a seat myself. If a bunch of middle-aged guys are curing their hangovers here in the middle of the day, that's basically confirmation this is a top-tier hangover soup spot, lol.

Apparently a lot of Samsung Lions players eat here. Kim Ji-chan has visited twice lol. Nice to see you~ Go Samsung, the strongest!!!!

What's on the Hanwoojang menu?

Hanwoojang sells more than just gukbap — they've got suyuk (boiled sliced pork) too. I'll have to come back for a round of that sometime bb. Only the seolleongtang comes with a free extra serving of noodles; if you want more, just ask.

What we ordered: teuk ttaro-gukbap 12,000 won and oxtail soup 17,000 won

What I ordered at Hanwoojang was the teuk ttaro-gukbap at ₩12,000 and the kkori-gomtang (oxtail soup) at ₩17,000.

Side dish spread of napa cabbage kimchi and stir-fried anchovies at Hanwoojang

The side dishes looked gorgeous. As always, a good gukbap place starts with good kimchi. The napa cabbage kimchi felt more like a fresh geotjeori (lightly seasoned kimchi), so crisp and refreshing, ugh, killer. The stir-fried anchovies were pretty salty too, in a good way b

What's the difference between teuk ttaro-gukbap and regular ttaro-gukbap?

Hanwoojang's teuk ttaro-gukbap at ₩12,000 differs slightly from the regular ttaro-gukbap — it's about whether you get extra seonji (ox blood sausage) plus somyeon (thin wheat noodles). If you love seonji, order the teuk (special) version! The seonji chunks are huge ㄷㄷ Can you see the seonji piled up over the spoon? There were several giant pieces packed in, so the portion was generous too.

Seonji and meat scooped up with a spoon from the teuk ttaro-gukbap

The gukbap was loaded with solid ingredients, meat piled generously on top. Green onion, radish, all the refreshing stuff was in there too. No wonder the broth tastes so clean~ Mix the rice in and one bowl disappears fast. Disappear, poof!

Kkakdugi and napa cabbage kimchi served alongside the gukbap

The kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and napa cabbage kimchi were both tasty and went great with the gukbap. Ah, care for a bowl~~ Since it's near Daegu Station I think I'll be back often. It's hard to find a gukbap place with truly rich broth, ugh. This place is the real real real deal~

Is the oxtail in Hanwoojang's kkori-gomtang tough?

Hanwoojang's kkori-gomtang at ₩17,000 had oxtail so tender the meat came right off the bone. When oxtail soup goes wrong it can be chewy and disappointing, so I don't order it much, but they said this place was known for it, so I gave it a try haha. Seeing all that green onion piled on top, I knew it had to be legit...!

Wow! The kkori-gomtang was so savory~ Best broth ever. Plenty of oxtail meat and pretty rich too. So tender it slid right off the bone. There was a pickled onion side dish, and dipping the meat in it for a bite was delicious. Highly recommend the kkori-gomtang~ Certified good restaurant~
