Hapjeong brunch café apple kale juice and ragù rigatoni: Seowon Angil

In short

Seowon Angil Hapjeong is a large two-floor brunch café in Seogyo-dong, Mapo, Seoul, a five-minute walk from Exit 3 of Hapjeong Station. The order here was the signature Seowon Angil Ragù Pasta made with rigatoni, the Seowon Angil beef tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes) that comes with fried sides, and an apple kale juice, and dipping bread into the deep ragù sauce was the highlight. Seowon Angil Hapjeong is also pet friendly for dogs that have finished their third vaccination, so it works for brunch with your dog.

Seowon Angil Hapjeong isn't far — just a 5-minute walk from Exit 3 of Hapjeong Station. It also allows dogs that have completed their third round of vaccinations. Dog-friendly restaurants or cafés aren't that common, so I really liked that about this place. I came for a meal, and even the exterior was beautifully done up.

How to order, and can you bring your dog?

There's an ordering counter right as you walk into Seowon Angil Hapjeong. I looked around for a seat first, then ordered.

It's a pet-friendly space that allows pets inside, and food covers are available to use too.

The self-serve bar with water, various sauces and seasonings is also well stocked.

Seating on the first and second floors

Once inside, it was bigger than I expected. With floor-to-ceiling windows showing the green scenery outside and a wood-tone interior, it feels cozy and relaxed — a nice place to spend time. The seating is also really varied, so it'd work well for hanging out with friends, a date, or even a group gathering!

With a second floor too, there's a wide range of seat choices. Each spot has a slightly different style, so you can pick the seat that suits you and settle in freely.

What we ordered at Seowon Angil Hapjeong

Seowon Angil Hapjeong is both a café and a spot for a range of brunch menus like salads, sandwiches, and pasta. It works well whether you just want a drink and café time, or a full meal. They also sell wine, beer, and other alcohol. I came for a meal, so I ordered a bit of everything I wanted to try! You can check the menu with photos on Naver, which is handy for deciding what to order.

Apple kale juice

They asked if it was okay to bring the juice out first, and the apple kale juice arrived first! Its vivid green color looked healthy right away. I'm not a fan of bitter flavors and was worried the kale would make it taste harsh, but the apple's sweet, refreshing flavor came through more, so it was easy to drink without any burden. It also paired well with the food.

Seowon Angil Ragù Pasta with rigatoni

This is Seowon Angil's signature menu, the one most people order — the Seowon Angil Ragù Pasta! It's rigatoni pasta with a deep, rich ragù sauce made by simmering beef and vegetables for a long time. The chunky rigatoni was loaded with thick ragù sauce and topped with a sprinkle of cheese — it looked incredibly appetizing just from the visual.

Instead of regular spaghetti noodles, it uses tube-shaped rigatoni, so the sauce soaks right into the inside of the pasta — I could immediately tell why this is the signature dish.

It was already delicious on its own, but dipping the bread that came with it into the sauce was even better. Usually when you order food at a brunch café, it can be disappointing, but I'm giving Seowon Angil five stars ★★★★★ as a top pick for pasta among Hapjeong brunch cafés. Highly recommend this dish if you like ragù pasta!

Seowon Angil beef tteokbokki and its fried sides

Lastly, the Seowon Angil Beef Tteokbokki! I like tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes), so I was curious and ordered it. First off, I was really surprised by the portion size. Interestingly, there are bits of beef stirred right into the tteokbokki — it's cooked to order, with beef stir-fried into a special sauce for an appealing depth of flavor, they said.

Thanks to the beef, I could taste real umami and depth — the flavor was definitely rich.

Since the ragù pasta is a heavy dish, eating the tteokbokki alongside it worked great — the spiciness kept things from feeling too rich, and I could keep eating without getting tired of it. Great combination!

The tteokbokki at Seowon Angil also comes with a huge pile of fried sides — sweet potato, dumplings, kimmari (seaweed roll fritter), and vegetable fritters, all really generous and satisfying.

Is Seowon Angil Hapjeong worth a visit?

Rich ragù pasta, spicy-sweet tteokbokki, generous fried sides, and a refreshing sweet apple kale juice — I ate really well! If you're looking for a great Hapjeong brunch café, I highly recommend Seowon Angil Hapjeong! Being pet-friendly is a huge plus, and it's a place where you can enjoy a generous variety of both food and drinks.
