Danyang ssambap restaurant with a kids' chair: Heukmaneul Boribap

In short

Heukmaneul Boribap is a Korean ssambap restaurant in the ssambap alley near Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, run as the second branch of Heukmaneul Ssambap. With the original branch full at noon on a weekend, the writer moved here and ordered the black garlic jeyuk (stir-fried pork) barley rice set for two at 14,000 won per person plus black garlic suyuk (boiled pork), which came with nine side dishes and a doenjang stew with crab. Mild, sweet jeyuk and a kids' chair make Heukmaneul Boribap an easy lunch stop on a family trip to Danyang.

Coming back from a trip to Danyang, I wanted to share a place we went to for a proper meal there. Traveling around Danyang, I noticed there are way more garlic restaurants than I expected — Danyang garlic is famous enough that you see garlic bread, garlic dishes, and Korean food using black garlic pretty much everywhere.

Street of garlic restaurants near Danyang Gyeongsang Market

We originally planned to go to Heukmaneul Ssambap near Danyang Gyeongsang Market, but since it was around noon on a weekend, the place was packed and fully booked. So while looking around the area, we discovered Heukmaneul Boribap!

Exterior of Heukmaneul Boribap restaurant

Turns out it's the second location run by the same people as Heukmaneul Ssambap, with a similar menu, so we didn't hesitate to head there instead.

For someone like me who loves barley rice, the name alone was appealing, haha.

Interior seating at Heukmaneul Boribap

Even here, visiting on a weekend lunch, it was almost fully seated! I guess a lot of people are looking for places to eat near Danyang Gyeongsang Market. Let me walk through what we actually ordered :)

The restaurant is well positioned for anyone exploring Danyang Gyeongsang Market, so you can pair a market stroll with a meal as one trip. Other reviews also mention it as a market-area favorite, praising the chewy barley rice, the jeyuk, the doenjang stew, and the generous side dishes.

Why we ended up at Heukmaneul Boribap mid-trip 🍚

Honestly, Heukmaneul Boribap wasn't our original destination. We figured since we were in Danyang, we had to visit Gyeongsang Market, and while wandering nearby we were looking for somewhere to eat lunch. Danyang is famous for garlic, so there were a lot of garlic-related restaurants around.

We first tried to eat at Heukmaneul Ssambap, but since it was weekend lunch, the crowd was huge. Thinking "we'd have to wait a bit here," we looked around and found out there was a second location with the same menu — and that's how we ended up at Heukmaneul Boribap.

At first I thought "second location" just meant a similar menu somewhere else, but once we actually ate there, the menu was pretty solid. And again, since we visited around weekend noon, this place was also almost fully seated. Seems like quite a few people are looking for lunch near Danyang Gyeongsang Market.

Ordering the black garlic jeyuk barley rice set for two

We ordered the black garlic jeyuk barley rice set for two, ₩14,000 per person, and added black garlic suyuk (boiled pork) on top.

Menu board for the black garlic jeyuk barley rice set

Since there were two of us, we went with the basic jeyuk barley rice set and added the suyuk so we could try a bit of everything.

What comes with the set: nine side dishes on one table

After ordering and waiting a bit, the dishes started coming out one by one,

Generously laid out barley rice set with many side dishes

and my first thought was "wow, that's a lot of side dishes!" haha. I'd expected barley rice with maybe one main dish, but the table ended up pretty loaded. The variety of sides was nice too — mostly mild, everyday banchan rather than anything too intense, so anyone could enjoy them comfortably.

The side dishes that day were:

  • Stir-fried mung bean sprouts
  • Carrot rapée
  • Seasoned wild greens
  • Spicy radish salad (musaengchae)
  • Stir-fried seaweed stem
  • Pickled onion
  • Stir-fried fish cake
  • Kimchi
  • Lettuce/perilla wraps (ssam)

That's the lineup — with so many side dishes, it was fun mixing and matching a bit with each spoonful of rice.

Especially when traveling as a family, everyone's tastes differ. With a Korean set meal like this offering so many side dishes, it seemed like a great fit — from grandparents to kids, everyone could pick what they liked.

The barley rice was the best part of the meal

And personally, what I liked most here was the barley rice.

Bowl of barley rice mixed with barley grains

Since I'm generally a fan of barley rice, I was already happy the rice came as boribap (barley rice), haha. With barley grains mixed through the rice, it had a clean, nutty taste even eaten plain. Other reviews mentioned how chewy the barley rice was and how fresh the greens were, and now I get why. It's tasty just with the jeyuk and rice, but piling on the side dishes one by one, a whole bowl disappears fast!

Mixing the black garlic jeyuk with barley rice, bibimbap style

My boyfriend likes to eat this way,

Barley rice mixed with jeyuk and side dishes

scooping jeyuk onto the barley rice, adding a bit of each side dish, and mixing it all together like bibimbap.

There's also perilla oil available on the table to add as you like. A splash of perilla oil brings up a nutty aroma that ties the barley rice, greens, and jeyuk together nicely. Personally, I'd recommend mixing it this way with several ingredients rather than eating the barley rice plain. Jeyuk pairs really well with rice in general, so it was even better this way.

How does the black garlic jeyuk taste? Sweet, tender, not spicy

The main dish for this meal — black garlic jeyuk!

Sweetly seasoned black garlic jeyuk

The jeyuk leaned sweeter than I expected. If you like spicy jeyuk-bokkeum, this might feel a bit different, but since it wasn't very spicy, I actually liked it. It wasn't intensely spicy or salty, so it was easy to eat without feeling heavy — and being mild, it seemed like something that would appeal to people of all ages and tastes.

For a family trip with kids, or a trip with parents where picking a menu everyone likes can be tricky, this kind of dish seemed like a solid choice. I liked piling the jeyuk onto barley rice, but of course, Koreans have to wrap it in a ssam leaf, lol.

Wrapping jeyuk and barley rice in a ssam leaf 🌿

I put jeyuk on barley rice and grabbed a lettuce leaf to wrap it all up together.

A lettuce wrap filled with barley rice and jeyuk

The clean taste of the barley rice, the sweet jeyuk, and the crisp texture of the wrap made a pretty great combo.

A wrap with added side dishes

Adding a little of the pickled onion or spicy radish salad from the side dishes worked well too. Switching up the side dishes as I ate kept things interesting. Since the barley rice itself is fairly plain, it pairs especially well with a seasoned dish like jeyuk.

Is the black garlic suyuk worth adding?

And the black garlic suyuk we ordered separately ( ღ'ᴗ'ღ )

Black garlic suyuk topped with black garlic sauce

Honestly, I hesitated a bit at first — the jeyuk set for two already seemed like it would be plenty. But I was curious about the black garlic suyuk, so we added it, and in the end, I was glad we did.

The suyuk (boiled pork) came topped generously with black garlic sauce, giving it a different feel from regular bossam. That black garlic sauce was really the highlight — it brought out the distinct flavor of black garlic while making the meat much easier and tastier to eat than plain. The pork itself was tender with almost no gamey smell, and the homemade black garlic sauce on top felt moist and well-matched with the meat. Other reviews also praised the black garlic suyuk as tender with no off smell.

When suyuk shows up, there's one thing you can't skip.

Bossam kimchi served alongside the suyuk

Bossam kimchi! The suyuk with black garlic sauce is delicious on its own, but paired with bossam kimchi, the combo never fails. The clean flavor of the meat matches well with the tangy-spicy kimchi, and with the sweet, rich black garlic sauce added on top, it was an even better combo than expected. Jeyuk went better with rice or ssam wraps,

while the suyuk was best with bossam kimchi, personally speaking.

The doenjang stew with crab was more generous than expected

And the doenjang (soybean paste) stew that came with the set shouldn't be overlooked either. It arrives bubbling in a stone pot, and the ingredients inside were more generous than I expected.

Stone pot doenjang stew with crab and tofu

There was plenty of tofu, plus crab, zucchini, and onion. With crab in it, the stew had a savory depth along with that clean, refreshing seafood note. Eating a spoonful of it between bites of barley rice, jeyuk, and side dishes hit the spot every time. Other reviews also praised this stew for its savory, bubbling flavor.

Honest verdict on the meal at Heukmaneul Boribap

This time we tried both the jeyuk barley rice set and the black garlic suyuk at Heukmaneul Boribap.

Full spread of the jeyuk barley rice set and black garlic suyuk

What I appreciated most personally was being able to comfortably enjoy a generous Korean spread. When traveling, pretty cafés and famous restaurants are nice, but sometimes you really need a proper full meal, haha. Especially since Danyang Gyeongsang Market is a common stop on any Danyang trip, this place was well located to visit after a market walk for a hearty barley rice set or Korean meal. And the fact that the menu uses garlic, Danyang's specialty product, made it feel all the more worth trying during the trip.

Who should eat at Heukmaneul Boribap? :)

  • ✔ Anyone looking for good food near Danyang Gyeongsang Market
  • ✔ Anyone wanting a hearty Korean meal during a Danyang trip
  • ✔ Barley rice lovers
  • ✔ Anyone who likes the jeyuk + barley rice combo
  • ✔ Anyone looking for mild, not-too-intense Korean food
  • ✔ Family trips to Danyang with parents
  • ✔ Anyone looking for a restaurant to visit with kids
  • ✔ Anyone wanting to try dishes using Danyang's specialty garlic
  • ✔ Anyone who loves a hearty set meal with lots of side dishes

I especially thought this was a good restaurant for family trips. The menu is mostly Korean food, and since the jeyuk isn't very spicy, it seemed easy for family members of different ages to find something to enjoy. With a kids' chair available too, it's a solid choice for families visiting with children.

A lunch stop to pair with Danyang Gugyeong Market

If you're like us, visiting Danyang and stopping by Gyeongsang Market before looking for lunch, Heukmaneul Boribap is worth adding to the list. We originally tried to go to Heukmaneul Ssambap but ended up at the second location, Heukmaneul Boribap, because of the crowds — and since I actually love barley rice, it worked out well for me, haha.

You can mix jeyuk into the barley rice, or wrap jeyuk and barley rice in a lettuce leaf like I did, and the suyuk goes great with black garlic sauce and bossam kimchi, with the savory doenjang stew filling in between bites for a pretty hearty meal. If you're looking for good Korean food or a good spot near Gyeongsang Market in Danyang, this is a place worth a visit :) If you need a solid meal during your Danyang trip, how about a barley rice set at Heukmaneul Boribap? 🍚

🚗 Parking tip near Gugyeong Market

Some reviews mention parking directly in front of the restaurant, but spots may be full on weekends or during lunch hours. If you're visiting around weekend noon like we did, it's a good idea to know the public parking lot location as a backup. It's close to Gyeongsang Market, so it's easy to combine market browsing with your meal.

Saved as a Danyang trip restaurant 🤍

On this Danyang trip, the place we originally planned to visit was too crowded, so we ended up here by chance — and the barley rice turned out to be tastier and the side dishes more generous than expected, so we left happy.

Since I already love barley rice, the barley rice + jeyuk + ssam combo really won me over, and I'd also recommend mixing jeyuk and side dishes into the barley rice with a bit of perilla oil, the way my boyfriend does. Adding the suyuk let us try two main dishes together, which made for a more varied meal since there were two of us. If you're on a Danyang trip and thinking "I want a proper meal today," give Heukmaneul Boribap near Danyang Gyeongsang Market a try :) With dishes using Danyang's specialty black garlic and a generous barley rice spread, it was a great place to fill up during the trip. 🍚🧄❤️
