Danyang dessert café with white chocolate garlic affogato: JB Coffee

When I first saw the visual, I genuinely thought there was real garlic in the dessert, so I asked the owner, "Did you actually put garlic in this?" haha. Turns out it wasn't garlic at all — it was white chocolate! Total plot twist.

We went to JB Coffee to try the '마늘인줄알았단양' ("Thought It Was Garlic, Danyang") — a name so uniquely Danyang that you'd probably only find it here :)

When you're traveling around Danyang, you end up eating plenty of good food, but when it comes to finding a café, sometimes you wonder, "where would actually be special?" We were looking for somewhere to rest after a meal in Danyang and heard this place had some unusual menu items, so we decided to check out JB Coffee. It turned out to be more than just a coffee-and-go kind of café — there was so much to look at the moment we walked in that we ended up staying much longer than planned haha.

Where is JB Coffee in Danyang, and what are its hours and parking?

☕ What you see the moment you walk into JB Coffee

Once you walk in, you'll notice it's not just about the coffee menu — figures are everywhere.

There were a ton of One Piece figures in particular, so it was fun just looking around haha.

I thought, "the owner must really love One Piece," and seeing that personal taste showing up all over the space made it stick in my memory way more than a typical café.

The café also spans two floors, so the space felt more spacious than expected.

It seemed great for a date like ours, but also fine for a family visit where you just order one bingsu and relax.

There's outdoor seating too, so on a nice day it'd be lovely to eat outside.

🍨 What we ordered: "I Thought It Was Garlic, Danyang" in banana, melon and strawberry

That day we ordered all three: banana, melon, and strawberry versions of 'Thought It Was Garlic, Danyang.'

The name alone is pretty hilarious, right? haha

When the menu first arrived, what was genuinely fun was that there's white chocolate lining the bottom with ice cream on top — and that white chocolate really does look exactly like garlic!!!

So I asked the owner, "Did you actually put garlic in this?" haha, and he laughed and explained why the menu is named 'Thought It Was Garlic, Danyang.' The name itself shows so much sense of humor haha.

The white chocolate looked exactly like a real garlic bulb — it was fascinating. We wondered if they'd made a custom mold for it and ended up studying it for a while. More than anything, the owner was so kind and fun that we were in a great mood even before eating :)

🍌 First flavor: banana

The first one we tried was the banana flavor.

It's white chocolate on the bottom with garlic-shaped ice cream on top, and you pour an espresso shot over it — affogato style. It felt completely different from a typical vanilla ice cream affogato.

The banana flavor itself was sweet with a nice crunchy sherbet-like texture, and once the coffee shot went in, you could taste both the sweetness and the coffee's bitterness together.

It gave me a slight 'Deowisanyang' (a Korean melon bar) vibe while eating it haha. This would be perfect to eat while traveling around Danyang on a hot day!

🍈 Second flavor: melon, the surprise of the three

Next was the melon flavor! Honestly, this was the one I was most curious about before ordering. I wondered, "would melon and coffee even go together?"

I thought the combination of fruit ice cream and coffee might be a bit polarizing, but it turned out to work way better than expected. The melon's sweet, fragrant flavor combined with the coffee's bitterness created something different from just eating melon ice cream on its own.

So I kept thinking, "wait, this is actually good?" and kept eating haha. My boyfriend ranked the melon flavor first out of all three.👍✨

🍓 Last flavor: strawberry

The last one we tried was the strawberry flavor.

Strawberry pairs well with ice cream or bingsu in general, so I wasn't too worried, and sure enough it was delicious haha. Eating it with the coffee shot made it feel different from just plain strawberry ice cream. It felt like eating bingsu, coffee, and ice cream all at once. Switching between the three flavors made the differences between them really clear, which was fun.

And to be clear, this doesn't mean strawberry wasn't good — it definitely was! If we had to rank them purely based on personal preference, it'd be:

• 👨🏻 My boyfriend's preference: melon > banana > strawberry

That's how it went haha. All three were genuinely delicious — this ranking is just based on "if you had to pick just one."

🧄 How much are Danyang Garlic Bingsu and Sambong Bingsu?

Honestly, after eating, there was another menu item we got even more curious about — the Danyang Garlic Bingsu and Sambong Bingsu. These are known as JB Coffee's signature bingsu (shaved ice) items, priced at ₩25,000 for the Danyang Garlic Bingsu and ₩25,000 for the Sambong Bingsu.

The garlic bingsu name might make you think, "wait, does it actually taste like garlic?" but apparently it's famous instead for its unique garlic-shaped visual.💖 When we visited, a family at the next table was eating the garlic bingsu, and honestly haha — we were eating our garlic-shaped affogato while next to us was an actual giant garlic-shaped bingsu, so I kept glancing over. I kept stealing looks haha, thinking "I should've ordered that too..."

There's also the Sambong Bingsu, inspired by Dodamsambong, one of Danyang's most famous landmarks — I'd love to come back specifically to try the bingsu next time.

📌 Final verdict on JB Coffee

This time we tried all three 'Thought It Was Garlic, Danyang' flavors — banana, melon, and strawberry.

At first it was funny because of the garlic-shaped white chocolate, and eating it was fun too since it's an affogato-style dish where you pour a shot over it. The banana had a crunchy sherbet texture that met the coffee for a sweet-bitter 'Deowisanyang' kind of vibe I loved; the melon was the biggest surprise since I wondered if coffee would even pair with it, but the combination worked better than expected; and the strawberry felt like eating bingsu, coffee, and ice cream all at once — easy and delicious.

More than anything, the owner was kind and funny, which made the whole visit feel great haha. Next time, I definitely want to try the garlic bingsu and Sambong bingsu we didn't get to this time — especially since seeing the family next to us eating the garlic bingsu made me so curious haha.

So if I come back to Danyang? I'll probably head straight back to JB Coffee, the Danyang bingsu spot, to finally try the garlic bingsu.
