Barley rice restaurant in Danyang: no-wait lunch at Heukmaneul Boribap
In short
Heukmaneul Boribap (흑마늘 보리밥) is a Korean restaurant on Byeolgok9-gil in Danyang, Chungbuk, a short walk up from the alley by Gucheong Market, serving black garlic jeyuk (stir-fried pork) and bossam (boiled pork) with barley rice. A waiting list was posted at the entrance, but arriving at a quieter hour meant a table right away, and the black garlic jeyuk barley rice set and the bossam were ordered by tablet, arriving with a heap of seasoned vegetables and doenjang jjigae. Rice and vegetable side dishes are only refilled when every diner orders their own meal, so order one meal per person at Heukmaneul Boribap.

I did a bit of a food tour while I was in Danyang, and this time I had a healthy, filling lunch that's great for anyone exploring the Gucheong Market area of Danyang: black garlic barley rice, haha!

Danyang is famous for black garlic, so it makes sense you can find all kinds of dishes made with it around town. This time I went looking for something a little special but still hearty near Gucheong Market, and ended up at Heukmaneul Boribap.

Where is Heukmaneul Boribap, and how close is it to Gucheong Market?
Heukmaneul Boribap sits on Byeolgok9-gil in Danyang-eup, just a short walk up from the Gucheong Market alley, so it's an easy stop if you're already hunting for good food around Danyang's Gucheong Market. What caught my eye is that it's not just a standard barley rice spread — it's built around Danyang's local specialty, with black garlic jeyuk (stir-fried pork) and black garlic bossam (boiled pork) both on the menu.
How long is the wait at Heukmaneul Boribap, and when to arrive to skip it
There was a long waiting list posted at the entrance, but luckily there was no one waiting when we arrived, so we got seated right away, haha! It's clearly a popular spot, so I'd recommend going during a quieter time slot.

The inside was spacious with lots of seating. This is what it looked like when we visited, but by the time we finished eating and left, there was a long line outside — so plenty of people show up hoping to try Danyang's black garlic barley rice!

Ordering by tablet and the one-meal-per-person rule
You order through the tablet at each table, haha! The menu has photos too, so it's not hard to figure out, and it's noted that single-person orders are available.

Most people at Heukmaneul Boribap, a solid lunch spot near Danyang's Gucheong Market, order either the jeyuk or bossam barley rice — I bet guys tend to go for the jeyuk, haha! They mention that unless every diner orders their own meal, extra rice and vegetable side dishes aren't provided. So if you've come all the way to Danyang to properly enjoy the black garlic barley rice, ordering one per person is basically a must, right?

What comes on the table: seasoned vegetables and wrap greens first
We got the side dishes for mixing into the barley rice, along with vegetables for wraps. Seaweed salad, carrots, bean sprouts, bok choy — a big pile of vegetables that are delicious once mixed into the barley rice!

The barley rice came out in a big bowl like this — you need a big dish if you're going to turn it into bibimbap, right??? Haha!

How does the black garlic jeyuk barley rice set taste?
The black garlic jeyuk barley rice set came out first. Jeyuk usually makes you think of a spicy-sweet sauce, but here it's finished with a special sauce made with black garlic — so it's spicy but sweet.
The black garlic flavor wasn't overpoweringly strong, so I think it'd be easy for first-timers to enjoy without feeling intimidated. The combination of spicy-sweet jeyuk, clean-tasting barley rice, and fresh vegetables together was pretty great!

Adding the vegetable side dishes and drizzling on gochujang and sesame oil made it really delicious — and it just gets richer and richer the more side dishes you pile on, magic~~

Bossam and doenjang jjigae: a Korean lunch on the road in Danyang
We tried the barley rice, bossam, and jeyuk all together, and a spicy doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) came out too, so there was nothing missing! Eating the barley rice with bossam and vegetables together, you keep reaching for more than you'd expect. Especially if you've been eating a lot of greasy food while traveling, a Korean meal like this feels extra welcome.

Barley rice enjoyed with all kinds of side dishes~ As someone who loves barley rice, black garlic barley rice was really the best choice! The jeyuk, with its spicy-sweet sauce, really wakes up your appetite, while the bossam is clean and tender — each with its own charm!

Is Heukmaneul Boribap worth a stop in Danyang?
Danyang has so much to see and so many good places to eat that you naturally get hungry after a day of walking around. If you're touring the Danyang River area or Gucheong Market and want a proper meal, Heukmaneul Boribap is worth a stop. What I found fun was how they used Danyang's local specialty, black garlic, to add a different flavor to familiar dishes like jeyuk and bossam. Hope you get to enjoy some delicious barley rice at Heukmaneul Boribap in Danyang, haha.
