Jeonju Hanok Village chicken snack shop with an open kitchen: Mannyeon
In short
Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store is a dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken snack) takeout shop across from Gyeonggijeon in Jeonju Hanok Village. A regular customer ordered the shrimp dakgangjeong half-and-half in soy and spicy for the first time and had it packed in about 10 minutes: the soy side was not salty, with a gentle fruit-sauce sweetness, while the spicy side balanced garlic and chili heat well. Mannyeon Dakgangjeong still tastes good after it cools, so it is a solid late-night takeout for a hanok stay.

Today I'm bringing you Mannyeon Dakgangjeong, a fried chicken snack (dakgangjeong) shop I use often and come back to on a regular basis. Anyone in the know already knows Mannyeon Dakgangjeong, and it happens to run a direct-operated store near Hanok Village, so I end up ordering takeout from here a lot.

I went for a walk in Hanok Village after a while, and maybe because it was a weekday, there weren't many people around. Still, tourists in hanbok popped up here and there, which is romance itself, haha, sniff.

Where is Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store, and what are its hours?
Mannyeon Dakgangjeong sits right across from Gyeonggijeon, the heart of Hanok Village. It's on a corner everyone spots at least once while walking through the village, so it's not hard to find.

Ordering the shrimp dakgangjeong half-and-half, with soy for the first time
This is the Mannyeon Dakgangjeong menu board. I thought about getting plain dakgangjeong but ended up ordering my usual shrimp dakgangjeong half-and-half (soy + spicy). I'd only ever had the mild and spicy versions before, so this was my first time trying the soy flavor — and as someone who loves soy sauce chicken in general, I was pretty excited, haha.

Besides dakgangjeong, they also sell side menu items like sotteoktteok, cheese balls, jjondeugi fritters, and beer slushies — and honestly, jjondeugi with beer feels almost unfair, isn't it?? Great snack combo for wandering around Hanok Village.

They were also running a receipt review event, and selling Jeonju moju in different sizes. If you haven't tried moju before, it might be worth grabbing a small one to sample!

The open kitchen and how long the takeout wait is
At Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store, the kitchen where the dakgangjeong is made is a fully open kitchen, kept really clean, which put my mind at ease about hygiene.

They pre-fry the chicken and shrimp first, then fry them once more before tossing them in sauce, so the cook time wasn't long at all — about 10 minutes, I think. Carrying the takeout home, the car filled with that distinctive sweet Mannyeon sauce smell, and it drove me a little crazy.

In the end I couldn't resist and snuck a bite or two in the car — not a secret anymore, haha. Even with a couple missing before I took this photo, the portion is still huge, right? It's too much for two people to finish, but a filling meal for three grown men.

How does the soy-sauce dakgangjeong taste?
I first tried the soy dakgangjeong I'd been curious about, and I liked that the soy aroma comes through without being too salty — Mannyeon's signature gentle fruit-sauce sweetness also came up softly, making the soy sauce genuinely tasty. The fried coating had no overpowering oil smell or fishy taste, was just the right thickness, and fried up nice and crispy.

The spicy half: a slow garlic-and-chili heat
Next up was the spicy version, which has garlic and chili mixed into the sauce. As expected, the garlic's sharp bite and the chili's heat melt subtly into Mannyeon's fruity sauce, and if you keep eating it, it gets fairly spicy!! That said, it wasn't just heat for heat's sake — the spicy-sweet balance in the sauce was really good.

Every so often you get a shrimp with some real size to it, and the plump, springy texture pairs surprisingly well with Mannyeon's fruit sauce. Personally, I'd recommend getting the shrimp gangjeong in the spicy flavor rather than the soy one!

Still good cold: late-night snack back at the hanok stay
After eating a fair amount, I went out to exercise and came back to try it cold, and while the sauce gets a bit thick and sticky, it's still tasty even cooled — which is exactly why Mannyeon Dakgangjeong is one of my go-to favorites. I'd recommend picking up Mannyeon Dakgangjeong as a late-night snack for your Hanok Village stay!!
