Yeouido Korean lunch: spicy pork and Spanish mackerel grill sets

In short

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido is a hearth-grilled fish Korean restaurant on basement level 1 of Gukjegeumyung-ro, by Saetgang Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. This visit ordered the hearth-grilled jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) set and the hearth-grilled Spanish mackerel set, with a piece of mackerel several times the size of a fist, sweet-savory pork, and basic side dishes that included japchae (stir-fried glass noodles). Tablet ordering, tea and a plum tea for dessert made Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido a tidy, filling lunch for Yeouido office workers.

What is Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido?

This is a review of Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido, which I visited wanting a filling meal in Yeouido. If you love clean, straightforward Korean food, you'll definitely be into this.

If you like grilled fish, you've probably heard of this place before!

The Yeouido branch hasn't been open long, so the moment I walked in, everything felt clean and pleasant.

Inside the restaurant: solo seats and tablet ordering

Neatly arranged interior seating

The tables and interior are kept spotless, so it seemed like a comfortable spot even for a lunchtime meal. There are also tables where you can dine solo without any awkwardness.

Solo-dining table seating

You can order right from your seat using a tablet, and pay all at once too. I could pick the menu comfortably by looking at photos — it had every convenience covered.

Here, instead of plain water, they serve a tea that's clearly been thought through, which I loved. Little touches like this really make an impression.

There's fresh wasabi soy sauce on the table too, so you can dip to your taste.

Ordering the spicy pork set and the Spanish mackerel set

That day we ordered the hearth-grilled jeyuk set and the hearth-grilled mackerel set! The visuals made our jaws drop as soon as they arrived.

Full table setting of the jeyuk set and mackerel set

For the hearth-grilled mackerel set, I was shocked by the size the moment it came out. The fish was way bigger than I expected — as soon as it hit the table, a genuine 'whoa, that's huge!' escaped.

How the hearth-grilled spicy pork sauce tastes

For jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork), the sauce is everything, and here it was really delicious. Rather than being overly salty or sweet, it's the kind of flavor that keeps pulling your chopsticks back when eaten with rice.

Pick up a piece of pork, lay it on top of the rice, and the sweet, savory depth of the sauce pairs perfectly with the rice!!!!

The meat wasn't tough or dry either — it chewed soft and easy, which I loved.

Grilled Spanish mackerel several times the size of a fist

Look at this mackerel, several times the size of my fist. Can you tell how big it is?

The outside was grilled golden-brown, and the flesh was really thick, so there was a lot to eat.

Golden-grilled surface of the mackerel

Grilled fish can easily turn out dry or fishy, but this mackerel's flesh was moist and tender with a clean, light taste that I really liked. Pulling the flesh apart lightly with chopsticks, big chunks came off easily, which made it easy to eat.

The sauce on the meat wasn't just sitting on the surface — it felt properly soaked in, so every bite delivered full flavor. Put a piece of jeyuk on each spoonful of rice, and before you know it, the rice just disappears!

Sauce-coated jeyuk pork piled on a spoonful of rice

Piling a big chunk of mackerel flesh onto warm rice made it an absolute rice thief. Since the mackerel itself is so large, there's plenty of flesh, making it a pretty filling meal on its own.

What side dishes come with the sets?

The basic side dishes, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) included, left nothing missing — a perfectly complete spread.

For anyone who likes jeyuk, this menu would satisfy without a doubt. It went well as a side with rice and was exactly right for a filling lunch.

Is it worth it for a Yeouido Korean lunch?

If you're looking for a clean restaurant in Yeouido, or searching for a Yeouido lunch spot or Korean restaurant in Yeouido, this one's worth a visit!

A place that even finished things off perfectly with plum tea for dessert. Overall clean, filling, and delicious — I left happy.
