Gwangju jjukkumi hot plate restaurant in Gyerim-dong: Jjukkumi Sinnara

In short

Jjukkumi Sinnara is a jjukkumi (baby octopus) hot plate restaurant behind the Doosan We've apartment complex in Gyerim-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju. Two diners ordered the medium jjukkumi and pork belly hot plate, listed for 2-3 people, plus flying fish roe fried rice, and the portion felt closer to 3 servings, so a little was left over; the self bar and basic side dishes were generous too. The rich sauce with the flying fish roe fried rice made Jjukkumi Sinnara a new number-one jjukkumi pick.

Today I'm talking about Jjukkumi Sinnara, a place I recently visited! I went in with zero expectations and came back with a new favorite jjukkumi (spicy octopus) spot!!! The taste was way beyond what this photo suggests, haha. It's a really rich, delicious flavor that makes you want a drink alongside it.

Jjukkumi Sinnara is a jjukkumi hot plate restaurant on Mudeung-ro in Dong-gu, Gwangju, tucked behind the Dusan We've apartment complex. Since it just opened, there were a lot of congratulatory plants around, haha. I went in the evening, and even though I shot the side that wasn't visible, the place was packed — being right behind the apartment complex, it seemed like all the neighborhood locals showed up, lol. It was so good I even thought about moving to this neighborhood, so please keep this one in mind, haha.

How much food is the medium jjukkumi hot plate for two people?

Jjukkumi Sinnara's jjukkumi samgyeop hot plate (medium) is listed as 2-3 servings, but for two people it felt like almost 3 servings — the amount was huge. There were two of us, and after ordering this we were so full we had to leave a little behind... T_T That was so upsetting that next time I'm planning to go with three people. We'll get the fried rice for 3 too, lol. It was seriously so good that not being able to finish it is honestly my biggest regret — come ready to eat until you're stuffed!!!

Jjukkumi Sinnara's self bar and basic side dishes

Jjukkumi Sinnara also has a self bar! They set the basic table for you, but if you need more of anything, you can just use the self bar. It was nice to be able to comfortably grab whatever was missing. I personally feel more at ease using a self bar like this. It was also great to be able to freely grab extra bowls.

Diced radish kimchi, corn salad, pickled radish, perilla leaves — you can fully gear up for eating jjukkumi. Lululu~~

This is the basic table setting! Even the basics came in a generous amount! But the truth is, we ended up going back for way more than this from the self bar..!

The soup was cool and refreshing, too. Usually the salad dressing at most restaurants isn't great so I skip it, but here the sauce was actually tasty so I ate a lot of it.

How to eat the jjukkumi and pork belly hot plate: staff flip it for you

Finally, the main jjukkumi samgyeop makes its appearance!!! It's supposed to be 2-3 servings but the amount when it arrived was so full I was shocked. I also noticed the next table eating a vegetable jjukkumi stir-fry type dish, and the look of that was seriously T_T — I'm already thinking of ordering that next time!

You let it cook while the staff come around and flip it once it's ready! Once it starts bubbling a bit, they come over and mix it all up with a spatula. From that point the smell got so intense it was hard to resist, but they told us the jjukkumi comes pre-cooked once already, so it's fine to eat right away.

Why did they prep this many types of jjukkumi so thoroughly,, I'm totally hooked now!!!

This sauce is on another level,, I've eaten at plenty of other places, but,, this genuinely became my new number one pick,, My friend, who just tagged along with no expectations, raved about Jjukkumi Sinnara too, haha. There's also a ton of cabbage in it, so I think even people who are dieting could still eat here without much guilt, lol. Seeing all the ingredients let me eat with total peace of mind. I'm dieting these days, so that matters, T_T

Flying fish roe fried rice is the real highlight at Jjukkumi Sinnara

The single most outrageous thing at Jjukkumi Sinnara is the flying fish roe fried rice. If you don't eat this, you're a fool. I was too full and wasn't going to order it, but my friend wanted it, so we got it — and I ended up eating half of it myself^^ Seriously!!!!!!! This sauce tastes like it exists purely to make this fried rice. My mouth is watering just thinking about it now.

This is a jjukkumi restaurant that's basically just building up to the fried rice!!!!

People who live near Dusan We've, you absolutely have to go here.... This is genuinely a must-visit restaurant!!! Everyone in Gwangju needs to know about this place,,,
