Gangneung family dinner with kids at a sashimi restaurant: Samsami-ne

In short

Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch is a sashimi restaurant standing right in front of the Gyeongpodae pine forest in Gangneung. A family of four who arrived after work ordered the value red sea bream yubiki + mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) set for two, added somyeon noodles to the sweet-and-tangy mulhoe broth, and worked through the red sea bream yubiki as well. The kids were won over by red sea bream on their first try, making Samsami-ne an easy pick for pairing sea views with dinner.

Mulhoe and red sea bream sashimi spread at Samsami-ne in Gyeongpodae, Gangneung

We'd decided to spend one night in Gangneung and rushed to Gyeongpodae as soon as work ended. Since this would be our first dinner after arriving, we wondered where to go — and that's how we found Samsami-ne.

It turned out to be a great pick for our family, who love sashimi. Right by the sea, it also worked well as a Gyeongpodae restaurant recommendation for the location alone.

The mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) we tried that day really hit the spot, so this place stuck in my memory as a go-to for Gangneung mulhoe.

Where is Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch, and is there parking?

Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch sits on Changhae-ro in Gangneung, right in front of the Gyeongpodae pine forest. It was convenient that we could park directly in front of the restaurant.

We arrived just as the sun was setting, and the view beyond the pine forest was so pretty we stopped to admire it for a moment.

The sea is right on the other side of the pine forest, so it's a great Gyeongpodae restaurant recommendation for combining a walk before or after your meal.

Fish tank at the entrance of Samsami-ne

The fish tank at the entrance was kept clean too. My kids always check out the fish tank first whenever we visit a sashimi restaurant, and this time was no exception — they stared into it for a while before we went in. As the kind of Gangneung sashimi restaurant you visit expecting fresh fish, the anticipation started the moment we walked in.

Window seats and the private space that works with kids

The interior of Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch was clean, split into window seats, an inner private space, and group seating. It being dinnertime, plenty of people were already eating.

The window seats were what I coveted most — that day the windows were flung wide open, letting the outside scenery pour straight in. Being able to enjoy an atmosphere like that so close to the sea made it a fitting Gyeongpodae restaurant recommendation for a trip.

Inner private space and group seating

We wanted to eat a little more comfortably with the kids, so we settled into the inner private space. There was also separate seating suited for groups further in, which looked good for either a quiet family meal or a larger visit.

Samsami-ne menu board and kiosk set options

What we ordered: the value red sea bream yubiki + mulhoe set for two

Samsami-ne's main menu had a range of full-course sets, but the kiosk also showed lighter, value-friendly sets. We went with the value red sea bream yubiki + mulhoe set for two — a perfectly sized choice since we were planning a second stop for dinner afterward.

Seaweed soup and steamed egg served as standard side dishes

While we waited, seaweed soup and steamed egg came out first.

Whenever we go to a sashimi restaurant with the kids, I always worry about whether there'll be anything for them to eat, so it was a relief that warm dishes came standard. The kids started in on their rice with the steamed egg and seaweed soup right away.

What does the mulhoe broth taste like, and how are the added noodles?

Samsami-ne's mulhoe came out before the red sea bream yubiki, and the broth was genuinely delicious. That's where it won me over completely.

Close-up of the tangy-sweet mulhoe broth

It was tangy and sweet, the kind of flavor that wakes up your appetite without being overly sharp — you just keep reaching for more. There was more fish in it than I expected too, so if you're hunting for a Gangneung mulhoe spot, this is the dish I'd recommend first.

Mulhoe generously filled with fish

My husband liked the mulhoe sauce so much he suggested adding more noodles partway through. We ended up adding noodles and slurping them up properly in the broth. With the cold mulhoe plus noodles, it felt like a full, satisfying bowl — I understood why this place is known for Gangneung mulhoe.

Extra noodles added and mixed into the mulhoe broth

On the way in I'd noticed they also sell cup mulhoe, and after tasting the regular version, I could see why that caught my eye too. It seems like a good option for a lighter bite at Gyeongpodae. Next time I visit Samsami-ne, I want to try the cup mulhoe.

Red sea bream yubiki: how did the kids react?

Samsami-ne's red sea bream yubiki arrived while we were still deep into the mulhoe, and it looked stunning from the start. Seeing the red sea bream so beautifully plated made the trip feel worthwhile as a Gangneung sashimi restaurant pick.

Our kids, who've recently started enjoying sashimi, were curious too. They've mostly had flounder before, so trying red sea bream for the first time, their eyes lit up as they said it was clearly different.

Watching them reach for piece after piece, it seemed to really suit their taste.

My husband was satisfied too, saying the fish was genuinely chewy and delicious. The firm texture unique to red sea bream held up well, tasting better the more you chewed, and it paired nicely with the cabbage salad served alongside.

Putting a piece of red sea bream on a bit of sushi rice made for another treat entirely. The fish itself was so good it's worth remembering as a Gyeongpodae restaurant recommendation.

The mulhoe and red sea bream set for two, plated together

Is the mulhoe + red sea bream set worth it for a family of four?

What I liked most was ordering mulhoe and red sea bream together. True to being a Gangneung mulhoe spot, going back and forth between the cool mulhoe and the chewy sashimi made for a great combination. It's a solid choice when a full course feels like too much but you still want to enjoy good sashimi and mulhoe together.

Spicy fish stew (maeuntang) was available as an extra, but since we had another stop planned for the evening, we wrapped up here. We didn't overeat, yet we still got to properly enjoy both the mulhoe and the red sea bream, so we left satisfied.

Samsami-ne's location right by Gyeongpodae is great, but what ultimately stays with me is the taste of the sashimi. If you're looking for a Gangneung sashimi restaurant recommendation where the food is as good as the atmosphere, this is a solid choice. Being able to enjoy the sea view and then eat right away is another plus as a Gyeongpodae restaurant recommendation.

If you'd like to enjoy sashimi and refreshing mulhoe together like our family did, this place will suit you well. The mulhoe broth is memorable enough that on our next Gangneung trip, Samsami-ne will be the first place that comes to mind when I'm looking for Gangneung mulhoe.

Our first dinner after arriving in Gyeongpodae turned out to be a real success. Samsami-ne let us enjoy delicious red sea bream and mulhoe right by the sea. It's a Gangneung sashimi restaurant I'd want to visit again the next time we're back in Gyeongpodae.
