Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch is a 25-year-old sashimi restaurant on the main street of Gyeongpodae Beach.
Its signature menu is red sea bream yubiki — sashimi made by pouring hot water briefly over red sea bream with the skin left on, to bring out a special texture.
Alongside assorted sashimi and red sea bream yubiki, they also run mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) and sashimi rice bowls, with everything from single-portion meals to set menus for 2–4 people, so it's easy to pick something that fits your group size.
I made a Naver reservation and picked up the value assorted sashimi + mulhoe combo for two, ₩70,000, as takeout.
Parking and how to get to Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch
Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch is at 451 Changhae-ro, Gangneung. It's on the main street of Gyeongpodae Beach, so it wasn't hard to find, and we parked right in front. From Gangneung Station, you can take bus 202, get off at Gyeongpo Lake stop, and it's about a 3-minute walk.
There's a live fish tank right at the entrance. Before I even went in to pick up my order, seeing the fish swimming around in there instantly gave me that 'I'm at a sashimi restaurant' feeling.
While waiting for our reserved sashimi, we took a quick look around the tank.
There was also a sign for ₩9,900 cup mulhoe available for takeout — I thought it would be nice to grab one and sit down by the beach to eat it.
What the inside of Samsami-ne looks like
When I went in to pick up my order, the inside stretched back quite far and had several tables set up.
They also had baby chairs ready, so it looked comfortable for visiting with kids too.

Opening up the takeout, there was a generous plate with several kinds of sashimi.
The slices weren't cut too thin, so the texture was great to chew on.
What I really enjoyed was wrapping the sashimi in white kimchi (baek-kimchi).
A crunchy piece of white kimchi with a slice of sashimi went so well together that I kept reaching for more.
They also packed rice separately so we could make sushi with it.
Adding a little wasabi to the rice and topping it with a piece of sashimi let us enjoy simple sashimi sushi right at home.
How was the mulhoe that came with the set?
The mulhoe had sashimi and vegetables in it, and they packed thin wheat noodles (somyeon) along with it too.
Eating the cool mulhoe in between bites of sashimi was great — we got to alternate between two dishes and enjoy both.
They also gave us two portions each of wrap vegetables, white kimchi, and sauces, which made it easy for the two of us to share.
