Gangneung makguksu restaurant: salmon keto buckwheat gimbap at Gossi's

In short

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is a makguksu (buckwheat cold noodle) restaurant right in front of Gangmun Beach in Gangneung, with sea views through the second floor's floor-to-ceiling windows. The meal was pollack sikhae bibim makguksu at 12,000 won and perilla oil makguksu at 11,000 won, plus a kimchi buckwheat pancake and a salmon keto buckwheat gimbap topped with whole slices of raw salmon. Dogs are welcome, baby chairs are ready, and the Gangmun Beach public lot gives one free hour, so Gossi's works well as the first meal of a Gangneung trip.

For our first meal in Gangneung, we went to Gossi's Donghae Makguksu, a famous makguksu (buckwheat cold noodle) restaurant ✨ If you come to Gangneung you basically have to eat makguksu, so I looked for a place where I could also get a proper ocean view, and this one was a perfect fit 🤭

It's verified for customer satisfaction, and it's also easy to bring your dog along, so I'd definitely recommend stopping by if you're visiting Gangneung 👍

Wall of celebrity signatures inside the restaurant

A second-generation makguksu restaurant featured on TV

The moment I walked in, I noticed the wall packed with celebrity signatures 👍 This restaurant has appeared on countless shows on KBS, MBC, MBN, and more, and was featured in programs like 'Gangneung, Town of Noodles' and 'The Art of Success' 📺

As you'd expect from a second-generation restaurant, they carefully select every ingredient, which made it feel even more trustworthy 😊

Seating on floors 1 and 2, baby chairs and restrooms at Gossi's

Here's the inside of the first floor 🪑 It seemed like the first floor was used mainly when the restaurant was nearly full, and regular diners were usually guided up to the second floor first, where the ocean view opens up!

There's a baby chair set up on the stairs to the second floor 👶 They had plenty on hand so families with kids could use them comfortably!

The moment you step up to the second floor, the blue view of Gangmun Beach fills the floor-to-ceiling windows — it satisfied my craving for an ocean-view restaurant 200% 💙

Every table has a clean hygiene sheet laid down, and each seat has a tablet for ordering, so it's easy to order 📱

We were seated right by the window — a prime spot with the whole Gangmun Beach view filling the frame 🏖

A self-service corner on one side of the restaurant had basic side dishes, scissors, tongs, and small plates neatly arranged.

The restrooms are inside the second-floor dining area, with separate men's and women's restrooms, which made them easy to use 🚽

Near the entrance on the first floor there's a well-arranged gift corner selling Gangwon-do regional specialties, good for souvenirs or gifts after your meal 🛍

What we ordered at Gossi's and what it cost

Pollack sikhae bibim makguksu (₩12,000) Perilla oil makguksu (₩11,000) Salmon keto buckwheat gimbap (₩13,000) Kimchi buckwheat pancake (₩8,000)

The bibim makguksu's red sauce made me a little worried it would be spicy, but it wasn't sharp-spicy at all — it had this appealing tangy-sweet flavor that was just spicy enough to wake up your appetite 🥢

Mixed pollack sikhae bibim makguksu noodles

The chewy pollack sikhae (fermented pollack) had this deep umami that paired so well with the nutty buckwheat aroma — I kept going back for more 😋

Perilla oil makguksu, 11,000 won

The perilla oil makguksu is made using only domestic organic perilla oil pressed at low temperature, which removes the bitterness and brings out the oil's aroma and flavor! At other restaurants, perilla oil makguksu can sometimes be too sweet and get tiring fast, but this one had little artificial sweetness and was packed with rich, nutty perilla flavor instead — much tastier 👍

At first you get a clean, plain taste without much punch, but once you add a bit of the broth that comes with it, the umami really comes alive and the seasoning hits just right 😋 It's not overpowering and goes down easy, so you can enjoy it all the way to the end without getting tired of it.

Kimchi buckwheat pancake, 8,000 won

The kimchi buckwheat pancake was the dish my mom raved about — the outside was crispy without being greasy, and the chewy buckwheat texture got nuttier the more you chewed, while the inside was packed full of spicy kimchi and hearty filling 🌶

The combo of kimchi and the light, clean buckwheat pancake was so good — I'd definitely recommend it as a side when just makguksu doesn't feel like enough 💛

A plate of salmon keto buckwheat gimbap
Thick slices of raw salmon on top of the buckwheat gimbap

Salmon keto buckwheat gimbap, 13,000 won

The salmon keto buckwheat gimbap (seaweed rice roll) was one of the dishes I'd been most looking forward to — I expected the salmon to come in cubes, but I was surprised to see a whole thick slice of raw salmon sitting right on top of the gimbap 🫢

Cross-section of the keto gimbap filled with buckwheat noodles

Since it's a keto gimbap filled with light buckwheat noodles and crunchy vegetables instead of rice, it feels completely light, and the salmon's soft, rich fattiness paired perfectly with the buckwheat noodles and crisp vegetables — if you love salmon, you have to try this one ✨
