Crab roe rice in the shell at Deodo Gejang, a Yangsan restaurant

In short

Deodo Gejang is a crab jang (marinated crab) restaurant near Tongdosa in Yangsan, Gyeongnam, recently relocated to a bigger space near the Tongdosa intercity bus terminal. Ordering the assorted jang nutrition pot rice set for two brings blue crab jang, soy and spicy yellow crab jang, octopus jang, abalone jang and soy shrimp jang all at once, plus rice mixed right into the blue crab shell with its rich roe. This was, without exaggeration, the best crab jang the writer has ever had.

Ordering the assorted jang nutrition pot rice set for two

Here's the Deodo Gejang menu. We ordered the assorted jang nutrition pot rice set for two — a hearty spread made up of blue crab jang + soy yellow crab jang + spicy yellow crab jang + octopus jang + abalone jang + soy shrimp jang.

The basic spread, ttukbaegi bulgogi, and pot rice

As soon as the basic side dishes started coming out one by one, I was surprised at how generous it was. I thought only the crab jang would be good, but even the standard dishes were all delicious, which only raised my expectations further. The ttukbaegi (hot stone pot) bulgogi and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) were especially good — the two alone could easily polish off a bowl of rice. 😂 But I held back and ate just a little, saving room for the main event: the crab jang.

I also loved that the rice wasn't just a plain bowl but came as warm pot rice. It stayed hot from start to finish, which paired perfectly with the food, and at the end you could pour broth into the pot to enjoy it as nurungji (scorched rice tea) — even more satisfying. 🤤

And finally, the assorted jang arrives!!!!! It's so generous!!!!

Blue crab jang, soy yellow crab jang, spicy yellow crab jang, octopus jang, abalone jang, soy shrimp jang — the table filled up completely, and everything looked so appetizing I was amazed. With so many varieties, I genuinely had to pause and think about what to eat first! Getting to taste jang with completely different flavors and textures all at once made picking through them really fun.

How was the soy yellow crab jang?

My top pick, fittingly for a Yangsan crab jang restaurant, was of course the crab jang. I started with the soy yellow crab jang. The sweet, salty soy sauce seasoning soaked well into the crab meat, giving it deep savory flavor. It wasn't overly salty like some soy crab jang can be — the subtle sweetness balanced it out fantastically. Dipping the soft crab meat lightly in the sauce went perfectly with rice.

And then the blue crab jang I'd been looking forward to! The crabs were big, and more importantly, packed full of meat inside. Even each little leg was plump and full, so picking the meat out leg by leg was genuinely fun. That feeling when a full mouthful of crab meat fills your mouth!!!!! It was pure happiness. 🥹 The meat was so substantial that I really felt the satisfaction of eating crab jang — this is exactly why people eat crab jang, I thought.

You absolutely have to mix rice into the blue crab shell! You can really taste the rich flavor of the crab's tomalley — so, so good.

Why it's great for family meals and group gatherings

Overall, every single dish at Deodo Gejang near Tongdosa in Yangsan was generous and delicious! The seating is also spacious, making it perfect not just for family meals but also for group gatherings or work dinners.

Above all, this was satisfying enough that I can confidently say it's the best crab jang I've ever had. If you love crab jang, you can trust this place and visit with confidence. I'm not recommending it lightly. There's clearly a reason Deodo Gejang has gotten popular enough to expand and relocate. If you want to properly enjoy a generous set meal with a variety of assorted jang, be sure to visit Deodo Gejang near Tongdosa in Yangsan!!! 🦀🦐
