Three-broth shabu-shabu for 3 in Jang-an-dong, Seoul: Shabu Torang
In short
Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch is a single-pot shabu-shabu restaurant at the Jang-han-ro intersection in Dongdaemun, Seoul, where a solo shabu-shabu pot starts at 7,900 won. Visiting with her mom and sister, the writer ordered one basic, one spicy and one tomato broth to compare them side by side, then cooked cream pasta in the spicy broth. I was trying to figure out where to grab lunch in Jang-an-dong with my mom and my sister when I spotted this shabu-shabu spot listed as a Jang-an-dong must-visit. Turns out Ryu Soo-young is the model for it. And the price is so good too!!

Where Shabu Torang Jang-an branch is and what the dining room is like

It's right at the intersection near where the old Bauhaus used to be, in that old commercial stretch of Jang-an-dong, so it was easy to find and easy to get to. There was a huge photo of actor Ryu Soo-young on the storefront window haha, that really built my confidence in the place!!

Inside there were more seats than I expected, but the layout wasn't really set up for three people to sit and talk together. I guess since it's Jang-an-dong solo shabu-shabu, everyone kind of eats separately haha. You'd get more of a shared-meal vibe coming in pairs or groups of four. There were actually more solo diners than anything, people eating alone in Jang-an-dong.
Shabu Torang menu and prices: five broths to choose from

Solo shabu-shabu starts at ₩7,900. Isn't that crazy cheap?! There are 5 flavors too — basic, spicy, tomato, mala, and sukiyaki.
Since there were three of us, we ordered basic, spicy, and tomato to start.

When you order shabu-shabu, it comes with a set vegetable platter (fried tofu skin, bean sprouts, crown daisy, enoki mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, napa cabbage, fish balls, rice cakes) and thin beef belly slices, and the spicy and tomato versions each come with their own separate sauce.

What does Shabu Torang's basic broth taste like?
Shabu Torang's basic broth is savory and clean. It really let the meat flavor come through the most, out of the three.
Compared to adding meat to the other broths, the basic one made the meat taste nuttier and richer. I think it would pair really well if you order the egg porridge to finish with. I added kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) noodle sari (add-on) haha.
Spicy broth at Shabu Torang: how much sauce to stir in

Spicy was the flavor I picked, and it really hits that hangover-curing spot. The sauce that goes into the spicy broth is genuinely great. At other shabu-shabu places, ordering the spicy version usually tastes kind of MSG-heavy and not great, but here it's not that at all — it's the real deep spicy flavor of haejangguk (hangover soup).

Even if you only add half the sauce packet instead of all of it, the flavor was just right. But it seems like they'll give you more sauce if you want, so feel free to add as much as you like! It's delicious…
How to cook cream pasta in the spicy broth

This combo especially — spicy broth with cream pasta — is the absolute best…. I saw that it's the combo Ryu Soo-young picked, so I tried it, and it's rich and creamy just like a rosé pasta, so good.
Two ladles of the spicy broth, then drop in the cream pasta!! Stir well while heating until it gets thick and creamy — done~!~!

By the time you finish the pasta too, you're completely full. Honestly I thought just eating the vegetables wouldn't be filling enough, but nope, it totally was hahaha. It's the perfect portion for a Jang-an-dong lunch.
Tomato broth with an adjustable spice level

If you already like tomato pasta, I'd recommend the tomato broth. My sister said it tasted similar to Haidilao's tomato soup base. It's basically a budget-friendly version of Haidilao, good to know!!
The tomato flavor lets you adjust the spice level — there's a spicy version and a basic version. I ordered the basic one and it was delicious. Tomato broth actually pairs with a surprisingly wide range of add-ins. I bet egg porridge would taste like tomato-egg stir-fry, kalguksu noodles would taste like tomato pasta, and cream pasta would probably be great too.

29,900 won for three: is Shabu Torang worth a return visit?
We ate this much and this generously as three people and the total was still ₩29,900… that's insane value, seriously. I'll definitely be back to this Jang-an-dong shabu-shabu spot.
5 out of 5 stars!!
It was satisfying being able to eat a hearty meal without worrying about the price haha. You can pick between basic, spicy, and tomato depending on your mood, and the spicy shabu-shabu with cream pasta combo especially was really delicious!
Since it's the single-pot style, it's great for eating alone in Jang-an-dong, and even with three of us, everyone could pick their own preferred flavor, which made it convenient. You get a warm, filling meal in generous portions, making it a perfect Jang-an-dong lunch option. The prices being this good made it even more satisfying — a real Jang-an-dong must-visit for shabu-shabu. If you're looking for good-value shabu-shabu in Jang-an-dong, give it a try :)
