Real mango rose cake cut open at Chef Cho, Seocho cake shop

In short

Chef Cho is a fresh fruit cream cake shop right at the entrance of Sweet Park, in the basement of Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam, Seocho, Seoul. This time the writer picked up a real mango rose cake, cut the mango first with scissors before slicing with a knife, and found the mango concentrated on top but well balanced with the cream and sponge and not too sweet. The double clear wrap band kept the shape perfectly intact even after being carried around while shaking.

This is the cake shop at Shinsegae Gangnam, Express Bus Terminal, that I absolutely love. Right at the entrance to Sweet Park, there it is haha, Chef Cho. It's the famous spot known as one of the four kings of cake, featured on those master craftsman shows. It got so, so famous that it eventually landed a spot in Shinsegae Gangnam's Sweet Park.

Seasonal fresh fruit whole cakes that change each season

What I like most is that the fruit on top changes with the season. Right now it's clearly peach season, so there's a ton of peach along with strawberries on top. Mango is imported so it's available year-round, always standing by.

When I visited back in May, there was no peach cake, but since peaches are definitely still in season now, I can see cakes topped with fresh peaches.

Last time I tried the pistachio chocolate cherry cake shown at the bottom of the photo, and it was so, so delicious. Everyone who tried it raved about Chef Cho's cakes. What should I get this time? Such a hard decision haha.

It's fig season now, so there's a fig pistachio cake piled with figs. There's plenty inside and plenty on top, so it looks really, really delicious.

There are slice cakes too. Instead of a whole cake, buying several slices to try a little of each seems like it would be so, so fun. The fruit crepe cake in particular looks amazing — it's packed with whole shine muscat grapes, strawberries, and mango. The fig crepe also looks really, really delicious, so I'll have to try the fig crepe next time.

A luxurious baby pink packaging box

At Chef Cho, the cake shop near Shinsegae Gangnam's Express Bus Terminal, even the cake box is so, so luxurious. It's a delicate baby pink box with a window so you can see the cake fully inside — it makes you gasp.

Real mango rose cake keeps its shape even after being shaken around

Ta-da. I feel like I shook this real mango rose cake around quite a bit while carrying it, but the cake kept its shape perfectly. There was a sturdy clear wrap band, and it was even doubled up!!! That's probably why the shape stayed so intact, haha.

How to easily cut the real mango rose cake

Wanting a pretty cut, I first cut the mango with scissors, then slid the cake knife in through that gap to slice it neatly.

Ta-da, the mango was almost entirely concentrated on top, and the big-looking mango piece I saw on the side turned out to be a thin mango slice~ huh, haha, I wondered if I'd been fooled haha, but after tasting it I found myself nodding along anyway. So good, ㅠㅠ!!!!

The harmony of the fresh cream, mango, and moist cake sponge was excellent. There wasn't as much mango packed in as I expected, and it was all concentrated on top, but the balance between mango, sponge, and cream was still great.

Best of all, it wasn't too sweet — such a refined flavor! I ate it happily. The kids really, really loved it, haha.

An honest review of the pistachio cake I tried last time

The cream is piped in a very luxurious way, decorated on top with pistachios and dried roses, giving it a really elegant look. Highly recommend as a gift.

What cake should I get for a pistachio lover's birthday? After thinking it over, I chose Chef Cho, the hottest cake shop in Shinsegae Gangnam's Sweet Park. Specifically, the pistachio forest cake. Pistachio cream, chocolate cake sponge, and fresh cherries packed in throughout made for a luxurious-tasting cake. The adults loved it so much, while the kids took one bite and put down their forks, haha.
