Out-of-season strawberry peach cake for a sister's birthday: Chef Cho
In short
Chef Cho Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam is a fruit cream cake shop inside Sweet Park, on the basement level of Shinsegae Department Store's Gangnam branch in Seocho, Seoul. For a younger sister's birthday, the writer bought the Peach Berry No.1 cake for 53,000 won, and while the 100% dairy whipped cream and moist sponge were excellent, the strawberries fell a little short on sweetness since it wasn't strawberry season, though the crisp "ddakbok" peaches paired beautifully with the cream. The tip for next time: pick whichever fruit is actually in season when choosing a whole cake here.

On special days like birthdays or anniversaries, choosing the right cake alone can lift the whole mood of the day. This time, while looking for a pretty, delicious cake to celebrate my youngest sister's birthday, I stopped by Sweet Park in Shinsegae Department Store's Gangnam branch. The cakes here are a clear visual feast — the moment you walk in, the overwhelming fruit toppings grab your attention, making it the kind of place anyone would love receiving a gift from. Here's my honest, self-paid review of visiting 'Chef Cho,' a premium dessert brand helmed by a master confectioner who's appeared on the TV show Master's of Living, and their Peach Berry No.1 cake.

Finding Chef Cho inside Sweet Park
On the basement floor of Shinsegae's Gangnam branch sits 'Sweet Park,' famous as a dessert mecca. But because so many famous brands are packed so tightly together with an interior that flows seamlessly from one to the next, first-time visitors can find it confusing to locate the exact shop. Several well-known dessert shops sit side by side in an open space that almost feels like one giant store.

Right past the entrance to Sweet Park, you'll see a section packed with cake specialty shops — and right in the middle of them is 'Chef Cho.' Since popular shops are all clustered together, lines can get mixed up, so it's worth double-checking the sign and display case before joining a queue.
What Chef Cho is known for
- Master confectioner's cakes: apparently introduced on SBS's Master's of Living as one of the '4 Kings of Cake,' made by a verified master craftsman
- 100% dairy whipped cream: no vegetable cream or synthetic additives, just pure dairy milk cream, so it's not greasy and goes down smoothly
- Fresh fruit sourced daily: not frozen fruit — fresh, in-season fruit delivered every morning, used generously

Here's the allergy information, for reference.

Browsing the display case — from slice cakes to whole cakes
There are also slice cakes for a simpler bite. They're all so pretty... I want to try every single one.

A strawberry-and-peach combo — pink through and through, even in looks.

A mango cake shaped like a rose. How many mangoes went into that?

It's fig season these days, so I'm curious about the fig-and-pistachio combination too.

Chocolate is always a good call!

Honestly, every single cake here looks beautiful.
Why I picked Peach Berry No.1, and the price
I originally wanted to try the mango cake piled high with sweet mango, but the birthday girl — my youngest sister — isn't a big mango fan and strongly requested strawberries, so I went with the 'Peach Berry No.1' instead. It cost ₩53,000.

The moment we pulled the cake out of the box, everyone in the family gasped — vivid, deep-red fruit was packed densely across the entire surface without a single gap. The combination of red and pink fruit on the white whipped cream was gorgeous and dramatic.

There was so much fruit it spilled over as we cut into it!

How was the cream and the sponge?
Cutting into it, the fruit wasn't just on top — strawberries and peaches were generously layered between the moist sponge layers as well. What impressed me most on the first bite was the quality of the cream and the sponge. True to its 100% dairy cream, it melted softly and smoothly the moment it hit my mouth, with no greasy or heavy aftertaste at all.

The sponge in particular was moist and soft with zero dryness — it was genuinely delicious even eaten on its own.

What fell a little short — off-season strawberries
One honest downside was the seasonal timing. Since I visited outside of peak strawberry season, the strawberries' natural sweetness and bright flavor weren't quite at their best.

The peaches, on the other hand, were the crisp, sweet 'ddakbok' (firm peach) variety, and their crunchy texture paired wonderfully with the cream.

A tip for choosing a whole cake at Chef Cho
Since fruit is the main event of these desserts, my tip is to pick whichever fruit is truly in season at the time of your visit — mango or peach in summer, strawberries in winter, and so on. I still have a small lingering wish for that mango cake, but the cream and sponge themselves were so good that the whole family finished every last crumb happily.
Thanks to the fresh, clean 100% dairy whipped cream and the exceptionally moist sponge, we got to enjoy a refined flavor without any overpowering sweetness. With its abundant fruit and showstopping look, this cake is perfect for birthdays or anniversary gifts.
