Tonkatsu with shrimp set near Yangjae Station exit 8: Yangjae Katsu

In short

Yangjae Katsu is a tonkatsu restaurant between Yangjae Station exit 8 and the Yangjaecheon café street in Seocho, Seoul. The writer ordered the hire katsu (fillet cutlet) + shrimp set and the special loin katsu, tasting them with two sauces plus lemon, salt, and wasabi, and loved the whole shrimp's soft flesh and the special loin katsu's chewy-yet-tender texture. With solo-dining tables and wifi, it's also an easy spot for lunch alone.

The restaurant is close to Yangjae Station exit 8! Though it's actually a bit closer to the Yangjaecheon café street haha!

Interior and solo-dining seats

Here's what the interior looks like! It had a bit of that 'this place is legit good' tonkatsu shop vibe!

There was a solo-dining table too! Tonkatsu is a great menu for eating alone — soul food for guys, right!

The restroom was outside the store!

I sat at a two-person table!

The kitchen was half-open! There was one staff member serving the floor too! There were some dine-in customers, but a lot of delivery and takeout orders!

How to eat it right, and cooking time

Yangjae Katsu had a sign explaining how to enjoy the food best! The reddish color in the cutlet isn't undercooked meat — it's from a component called myoglobin, so you can eat it worry-free! Cooking time took about 10–15 minutes!

As a review event perk, they also give you a drink or curry for free!

First impressions of the hire katsu + shrimp set and the special loin katsu

Here's the shrimp and hire katsu combo! The shrimp was bigger than I expected! And it was served whole, which made it look even more appetizing!

Here's the special loin katsu! This one was seriously delicious! Instead of a purely soft texture, it had this chewy-yet-tender bite that really suited my taste!

The shrimp's body section was fried so well too! Just a small bite and the shrimp flesh slid softly into my mouth — so good!

The hire katsu was a cutlet with a soft, substantial feel! A tender texture, but you could still taste the hearty flavor of the meat!

Side dishes and the two sauces

Here's the side dish lineup! Overall they went well with the tonkatsu!

They give you two tonkatsu sauces! Both were good, but the white sauce suited my taste a bit more! It had a more mayonnaise-like soft flavor that paired really well with the tonkatsu!

There's furikake sprinkled on top of the rice!

Lemon, salt, or wasabi — which combo was best?

Here's the special loin katsu! It truly lived up to its name — really, really delicious tonkatsu!

Besides the tonkatsu sauces, they also give you lemon, salt, and wasabi. The wasabi wasn't spicy, so I could pile it on generously and eat it with the tonkatsu!

I thought it would be a purely soft texture, but it was soft with a lively chewy bite — a texture I'd never felt in tonkatsu before!

I ate the hire katsu together with it too! The bottom side looked like this!

Let's try dipping it in the tonkatsu sauce!

For me, wasabi felt like the best combo! Total wasabi addict! Haha!

Let's eat the special loin katsu again! How's the visuals? Looks legit good, right?!

Also dipped it in salt!

I squeezed lemon over the hire katsu too! The lemon's freshness paired really well with the tonkatsu!

The rice was hot and tasted great too!

Whole fried shrimp and cabbage salad

My favorite, the fried shrimp!

One bite in and you can see the white flesh!

The cabbage salad served as a side was sliced really thin, giving it a soft, crisp texture, and the dressing was a savory-sweet sauce that made it even better! Kind of tasted like sesame oil dressing maybe!

Let me wrap this up with one last delicious-looking shot of the special loin katsu! If you visit here, you have to try the special loin katsu!
