Spicy broth unlimited shabu-shabu at Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch
In short
Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch is an unlimited hinoki steam, spring roll wrap, and shabu-shabu restaurant on the 2nd floor of Granvia Star near Dongtan Station in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Craving something light during pregnancy, the writer returned after a long gap and ordered the hinoki steam set with katsuo and spicy broth, filling up on one pot of hinoki steam plus two plates of meat and vegetables before skipping the porridge and finishing with tteokbokki and fries from the self-bar instead. The self-bar vegetables were fresh and there's a playroom, making it a good pick for a family meal.

Today I want to share a story about Pyeonbaek Hoegwan, a restaurant near Dongtan Station I visited after a long while!! Before I moved, I used to go all the time. But after moving, it's a bit farther, so it's not as easy to visit as before ㅠㅠ
But once I got pregnant, I started craving hinoki steam and spring roll wraps again lol. I wanted something light, and honestly the spring roll wraps here are just so good ㅠㅠㅠ So I finally talked my husband into going after a long time haha

How's parking at Pyeonbaek Hoegwan near Dongtan Station?
Flew straight over after work!! Granvia Star, where Pyeonbaek Hoegwan is located, has a really spacious parking lot, which I love. If you're using the underground parking, parking near gate 1 is closest to the elevator!
The one downside... there's only one elevator ㅠㅠㅠ Depending on the time, you might have to wait a bit. Still, the parking space itself is huge, so it's a great spot near Dongtan Station even for group dinners without parking worries.

Hinoki steam and shabu-shabu with a spicy broth
After sitting down we debated what to order and went with the hinoki steam + katsuo broth + spicy broth basic set!! Personally the beef bone ma-la broth I had before was really good too, but this time I was craving something spicy so I picked the spicy broth.
Before, whenever we came with our son, we'd always order the white doenjang chicken broth set to get him to eat some soup. But it turns out he doesn't really eat shabu-shabu that much lol. He fills up on hinoki steam and usually heads straight to the playroom...

So now we just comfortably order the spicy broth we actually want haha. With the three of us, they set out three bowls. But since we know our son will be happy with just seaweed rice and hinoki steam meat, we skip the sauce bowl for him lol.

The main event: hinoki steam
Once you order, they bring out a pot of hinoki steam first. Oh man... the hinoki steam is so good ㅠㅠㅠ There's a subtle hinoki wood scent, and the meat is light and tender — the kind of flavor you keep going back for!!
When it's just the two of us, we usually don't need a refill of hinoki steam before we're already full by the time we get to shabu-shabu. With 3-4 people, we usually refill once before moving on to shabu-shabu. It's nice that you can adjust how much you eat based on the group size. While the hinoki steam is steaming, I go ahead and prep the spring roll vegetables!!

From spring roll vegetables to the self-bar
While waiting for the hinoki steam, they bring out the spring roll vegetables and rice paper. I also take a lap around the self-bar haha. They have tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and various snacks at the self-bar, so there's actually a lot for kids to eat if you come with them. And one thing I love about Pyeonbaek Hoegwan — they refill the self-bar food right away whenever it runs low!

There was hardly ever a case where what I wanted was missing, so I never felt shorted. It's not easy to find a shabu-shabu place with such fresh salad vegetables ㅠㅠ The variety is great and everything's crisp, perfect for wrapping in spring rolls. Beyond the shabu-shabu vegetables, they also have vegetable fried rice that's great for kids, making this a solid spot for a family meal out.

We got our son a bowl from the self-bar too lol, and got ourselves ready for the real spring roll wrapping.

Hinoki steam plus spring roll wraps is the best combo
Finally the hinoki steam, my personal main dish, is ready!! You dip the rice paper until soft, pile on all kinds of vegetables, then add hinoki steam meat, roll it up, dip it in sauce... oh my... pure bliss ㅠㅠㅠ

The hinoki steam itself is already light, and with plenty of fresh vegetables wrapped in, it never feels heavy no matter how much you eat!! Maybe that's why my stomach stayed comfortable even after eating a lot — I just kept reaching for more lol. Once we happily finished off the whole pot, we moved on to the next round.

After hinoki steam comes shabu-shabu!
Now it's shabu-shabu time!! Once the broth is bubbling, we load it up with vegetables and all the meat. And then quickly make more spring roll wraps lol. This is where we have fun making almost all the meat into spring roll wraps.
One piece of meat, a heap of vegetables, roll it up, dip it in sauce! It's a different flavor from the hinoki steam wraps, so I kept eating more. We also grabbed one more plate each of meat and vegetables, wrapping some in spring rolls and just dipping the rest straight in sauce.

Between the two of us, about one pot of hinoki steam plus two plates of meat and vegetables was enough to fill us up completely. After eating like that... there's no room left for porridge lol. It's unlimited refill, and yet we get plenty full just from this, so it's really good value.

But we couldn't resist the tteokbokki lol
We were way too full to eat porridge... but the tteokbokki at the self-bar is just too good ㅠㅠㅠ So in the end we grabbed tteokbokki and fries one last time lol.
"This is really the last of it!"
...we said as we ate... but somehow we still had room lol. We finished off the tteokbokki and fries neatly and headed home.

A must-try near Dongtan Station, great for a family meal!
Pyeonbaek Hoegwan was just as good as ever after a long break!! Being able to enjoy hinoki steam, spring roll wraps, and shabu-shabu all in one meal, and unlimited refills so you can eat as much as you like, is definitely the biggest draw. The hinoki steam itself is light, so it's great wrapped in spring rolls, and following it with shabu-shabu makes for a really satisfying meal. There's plenty for kids to eat too, plus a playroom, making it a solid choice for a family outing.

Our son ate his hinoki steam meat and seaweed rice happily and then headed off to the playroom lol. The adults get to eat their fill of spring roll wraps and shabu-shabu, while the kid eats and plays — great for a family visit.
Pyeonbaek Hoegwan near Dongtan Station tasted even better after not visiting for a while! If you like hinoki steam or spring roll wraps, or you're looking for a good shabu-shabu spot in Dongtan, give it a try!! I'll probably drag my husband back again next time I'm craving spring roll wraps lol.
