Seongnam chicken restaurant for crispy scorched rice: Jangjakkun

Crispy scorched-rice chicken in Yatap

I found Jangjakkun Yatap Direct Branch (장작꾼 야탑직영점), a Yatap chicken spot with incredibly appealing crispy scorched rice, on Yatap's restaurant street!! I already love whole chicken, but add scorched-rice chicken and sweet-savory sauce—shall we take a look at chicken with a thousand charms~?

Jangjakkun Yatap Direct Branch is at 5 Jangmi-ro 92beon-gil in Bundang-gu, Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do. Come down toward the lower side rather than the hill and it is right there on the first floor! An easy walk from Yatap Station, haha.

Inside Jangjakkun Yatap Direct Branch and reservations

Here is the inside of Jangjakkun Yatap! It was quite spacious with lots of seating, and maybe because it was a weekend evening, there were lots of diners too. There is also a private space for groups, so I think it would be great for a work dinner in Yatap!!

We reserved in advance, and it filled up so quickly that I was glad we had! At this popular Yatap chicken restaurant, they set out the initial table spread really fast too, haha.

Ordering the herbal and seasoned 1+1 whole-chicken set

Here is the menu at Jangjakkun Yatap! Whole chicken is naturally the main event, but there were so many sauces—corn, Cheongyang chili cream, rosé, and more—and the 1+1 set even comes with a ₩2,000 discount! The three of us ordered the 1+1 set plus a side and got to enjoy a hearty meal :)

The chicken was delicious, and above all, the crispy scorched rice was absolutely amazing in this meal...♡ Let me show you the photos!

I had to step outside briefly to take a call, and when I came back in, I spotted the grill! Seeing that the owner roasts the whole chickens over firewood themselves, I thought, there is just no way this could be bad... haha.

Starting the meal with complimentary chicken porridge

When I came back in, there was the complimentary chicken porridge! It smelled so wonderfully nutty from the moment it arrived, and with lots of meat and sesame seeds, it was such a special bowl of porridge.

I especially liked it because it had pine nuts in it—maybe even more because I know how expensive pine nuts are, haha. Anyway, this chicken-porridge appetizer was excellent...👍

Crispy scorched rice: herbal versus seasoned chicken

The cast-iron platter was much bigger than I expected. The herbal scorched rice is on the left and the seasoned scorched rice is on the right! The staff member told us to start with the chicken breast, then wait until the rice underneath had crisped up enough before scraping it off to eat :)

The unsauced herbal scorched-rice whole chicken had a gentle herbal fragrance and a little smoky aroma~ Personally, the herbal one was more my taste♡ It was such a good combination dipped in the mustard sauce :)

The seasoned scorched-rice chicken arrived with the sauce bubbling away, and the presentation was amazing! The sauce was pleasantly sweet rather than spicy, so I think children would enjoy it too. And especially, this corn topping was a legendary match.

And honestly, the very best part is the scorched rice, right!? Scrape it vigorously with a spoon and it is heavenly☆ Ginseng and whole garlic are in there too, seasoning the crispy rice with their fragrance, so there is no way it would not be delicious... (I wanted to order extra scorched rice ㅠ)

A moist Jjapagetti side

Then I suddenly had a craving for black-bean noodles, so we ordered Jjapagetti as a side! A big egg on top made it look even more delicious~

I am totally on team moist Jjapagetti like this, so I happily ate it all the way down to the sauce, haha. It was way tastier than when I make it... Why do instant noodles taste better when you eat them out....?

So that was two flavors of whole chicken at Jangjakkun, a Yatap chicken spot! Personally, I loved the herbal flavor with its appealing crispy scorched rice, so next time I am going back to have it with beer :)
