Solo tteokbokki with 4 boiled eggs for ₩10,000: Deokjane Bangatgan
In short
Deokjane Bangatgan is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant right next to Sinnonhyeon Station in Seocho, Seoul, that makes its own rice cakes in-house. On this visit, a regular ordered garaetteok tteokbokki for ₩6,000 and added 4 boiled eggs (2 orders at ₩2,000 each) for a solo meal that came to exactly ₩10,000, and the thick sauce paired with potato salad was as good as ever. If you prefer thick, clingy sauce over the soupy style, Deokjane Bangatgan is the answer.

Whenever I'm near Sinnonhyeon and craving tteokbokki, this is the place I go out of my way for — Deokjane Bangatgan (덕자네방앗간)!!!!

I'm not writing this after one visit out of curiosity — I've already been here dozens of times as a regular. I love the chewy texture of the plump garaetteok (cylindrical rice cakes), so even when I'm alone in Sinnonhyeon, this is the snack spot I head to. This day was no different — I went straight to Deokjane Bangatgan without even considering anywhere else, ordered my favorite garaetteok tteokbokki with extra boiled eggs, and had a sweet, chewy, satisfying meal.

Deokjane Bangatgan is right next to Sinnonhyeon Station, so it's easy to find. It used to be a small shop but expanded a while back, and the menu has grown a lot since then.

A ₩10,000 solo order
Deokjane Bangatgan's menu board, kiosk ordering. Since I was dining alone, I planned to keep it simple, right?
- Garaetteok tteokbokki x1 — ₩6,000
- 4 boiled eggs added... ₩2,000 x 2
- Total: ₩10,000 worth of happiness

Why is it called a 'bangatgan' (rice mill)?
You might wonder why 'bangatgan' (rice mill) is in the name, but this is a place that makes its own rice cakes for the tteokbokki. They use all that rice to press their own garaetteok in-house, which is also why they have a menu pairing garaetteok with jocheong (rice syrup).

You order at the kiosk, and it's self-service — pick up your order when your number shows up on the monitor. If you get the tteokbokki to go, potato salad isn't included. Packaging leftovers comes with a ₩500 eco fee per container.

Plump garaetteok tteokbokki
Garaetteok bubbling away in red sauce... I've had this many times already, but it looks delicious every single time. And there it was — exactly what I ordered today, right in front of me. Not the thin rice cakes you usually see, but plump garaetteok thickly coated in red sauce. Deokjane Bangatgan is also known for its jjolmyeon (chewy noodles) and bibim mandu (spicy dumplings), but this day I wanted to focus purely on the tteokbokki I love, no sides.

Grab pickled radish, sauces, and utensils from the self-serve bar.

The reason I keep coming back: the thick sauce
The reason I keep coming back to Deokjane Bangatgan is the garaetteok, sure, but also that sauce... a thick, clingy sauce, not a watery soup-style tteokbokki sauce — I love that kind of richness. And the potato salad on top of the tteokbokki is another highlight. The sauce clings tightly to the garaetteok, with sweet and spicy flavors coming through together, and thick pieces of rice cake loaded with sauce — how can something taste this good going into your mouth!

Eating it with the potato salad mellows the flavor and adds a nutty richness. I sometimes put a bit of potato salad right on top of the garaetteok and eat them together — carbs plus carbs. Chewy rice cake plus rich sauce plus soft potato — this combo is oddly addictive.

Why I added 4 boiled eggs
Telling myself I was getting my protein in... I ended up ordering 4 eggs. Two for ₩2,000, so I got 4. Fried snacks with tteokbokki are always right, but so are eggs. Split the egg in half, lightly mash the yolk, and coat it generously in the thick sauce — genuinely delicious. I already know exactly what this place tastes like since I've been so many times, but a familiar flavor you love hits even harder.

And the fish cake broth they give you on the side settles your stomach right down. New restaurants keep popping up around Sinnonhyeon, but on days I'm craving tteokbokki, this familiar favorite is still the one I think of.

For the thick-sauce crowd, not the soup crowd
If you're on team thick sauce rather than team soup, and you love plump, chewy garaetteok tteokbokki, remember Deokjane Bangatgan, the tteokbokki restaurant by Sinnonhyeon Station. Certified regular status!
