Gimpo Korean BBQ with tableside grilling: Donpu The Grill

With the weekend here, I wanted to recharge with a hearty meal of juicy meat, so I headed to Donpu The Grill, a well-known pork belly spot in Janggi-dong's dining alley.

Having newly opened with know-how built over five years running a meat-delivery specialty shop, it had me excited even before my visit. It is close to Exit 5 of Janggi Station, so getting there by public transit was easy; drivers can conveniently use the nearby Janggi 3 Public Parking Lot.

The spacious, neatly kept interior has generously arranged four-person tables. By dinner, it filled up quickly—a Janggi-dong favorite loved by local residents and families.

With 180g of par-grilled pork belly, 180g of par-grilled pork neck, and 140g of po samgyeop (pork belly cut), it was just the right amount for two and great value.

The owner carefully grilled everything from start to finish, so we could simply focus on eating. The thick pork neck and pork belly were packed with juices all the way through, with a flavor that almost felt like steak.

Flying fish roe cheese-bomb steamed egg

The savory cheese, soft egg, and popping texture of the flying fish roe worked wonderfully with the meat.

Icy mul-naengmyeon

Available free with a Naver reservation coupon, this was the perfect side after rich meat. Its broth, full of fine ice crystals, left my palate feeling wonderfully refreshed.

Kimchi and minari grilled in pork fat

The restaurant's standout feature is its grill design, developed by the owner. Neat banchan (Korean side dishes) and six house sauces are set around the rim encircling the central grill, which is designed so that kimchi and minari (water parsley) can cook in the rendered pork fat.

The combination of half a head of complimentary kimchi and fresh minari, grilled golden in the pork fat, was especially memorable.

The self-service bar also offered unlimited fresh ssam vegetables, making it easy to enjoy them to your heart's content.

Thanks to the tableside service for the par-grilled meat, we could enjoy a relaxed meal without smoke or the work of grilling. Using the Naver review and reservation events meant we could make the most of the flying fish roe cheese-bomb steamed egg, icy mul-naengmyeon, and dolpan kimchi jjageuri, making it excellent value. The complimentary kimchi and minari grilled in pork fat were another point I will remember for a long time.
