Dalseo Daegu Korean restaurant live abalone stew: Sin Yeongung

In short

Sin Yeongung Cheonggukjang Haemulttukbaegi Seongseo Moda Outlet branch is a Korean restaurant in Dalseo, Daegu. I visited with my parents for live abalone cheonggukjang seafood stew and seafood stew, both generously filled with seafood and warming broth. A satisfying stop after outlet shopping.

Today, I visited Sin Yeongung Cheonggukjang Haemulttukbaegi Seongseo Moda Outlet branch, a great cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste) seafood stew spot at Seongseo Moda Outlet in Daegu. The hearty cheonggukjang was packed with seafood, bringing together the clean, refreshing flavor of the sea and the nutty depth of cheonggukjang for seriously savory flavor. The hot, refreshing broth also made this a great place for a hangover meal.

Seating for solo meals through group gatherings

Inside, the restaurant has seating suited to every party size, from group tables to four-person, two-person, and solo seats. Each table has dividers for a more private meal, and the solo seats looked great for eating alone, too.

Restaurant seating with dividers

There are three separate rooms for group seating. Each room has dividers that can be opened or closed to suit the size of your party, so it looked ideal for gatherings or company dinners.

Each table is set with soy sauce, individually packaged fresh wasabi, cutlery, cups, a menu, and a kiosk.

Included side dishes and a self-service banchan bar

The included banchan (Korean side dishes) were a European-style salad, pickled mushrooms, house-made seokbakji (cubed radish kimchi), fish cake, and peppers dressed in doenjang (soybean paste). Every side dish was tasty, which made me look forward to the mains even more. Especially the doenjang peppers—once you try them, you will keep reaching for more.

There is also a self-service side-dish station in one corner of the restaurant, so you can help yourself if you need more.

A varied menu, from earthenware-pot stews to seafood boils

Beyond the cheonggukjang seafood stew, there were many kinds of ttukbaegi (earthenware-pot) stews, bibimbap, pork cutlets, and more. They also offer dishes made with fresh seafood, including braised seafood, sliced boiled octopus, and seasoned cockles. What surprised me most was that they had the currently popular seafood boil. I had been curious about it because not many places sell seafood boils, even though I wanted to try one. But since I came with my parents that day, I saved it for next time—and decided I definitely have to try it then.

Live abalone cheonggukjang seafood stew and seafood stew

From the many choices, we ordered the live abalone cheonggukjang seafood stew and the seafood stew without cheonggukjang. The sight of them overflowing with seafood had us salivating before we even started eating.

The signature topped with a large live abalone

First up was the signature live abalone cheonggukjang seafood stew, topped with a large live abalone. Seeing the abalone still moving and smelling that nutty cheonggukjang, I thought, “There is no way this could be anything but delicious.”

The cheonggukjang seafood stew was generously filled with seafood such as fish roe, milt, crab, and mussels. The clean seafood flavor and nutty cheonggukjang came together beautifully, making the broth absolutely fantastic. The distinctive flavor and aroma of cheonggukjang were milder than expected, so even people who do not usually eat it can enjoy it without feeling intimidated.

A lightly spicy, refreshing seafood stew

The seafood stew has the same kinds of seafood as the live abalone cheonggukjang seafood stew, except for the live abalone and cheonggukjang. It still includes chewy abalone, though it is not live abalone. With its lightly spicy broth and generous seafood, it delivers that classic seafood stew flavor—refreshing and clean.

After we polished off the stews, this many seafood shells had piled up. With such fresh seafood added so generously, how could it not be delicious?!

There is also a self-service coffee corner after your meal, so be sure to grab a cup before you go.

If there is a wait

Since this is a popular restaurant these days, you may need to wait. Register through Catch Table, shop nearby, then head in when you receive the notification. The country-of-origin information is also neatly displayed for reference.

I loved being able to enjoy the nutty taste of cheonggukjang and the refreshing, clean flavor of seafood soup in one meal. The cheonggukjang flavor and aroma were not overpowering, so it seemed easy to enjoy even for those who do not usually eat it, while the generous seafood made for a hearty meal.

Along with the ttukbaegi dishes, the restaurant offers a range of choices, from the trendy seafood platter boil to braised seafood, so I thought it would be a good spot for family meals, gatherings, or company dinners. Above all, I visited with my parents that day, and both of them enjoyed it so much that I felt oddly proud, too. If you are shopping at Seongseo Moda Outlet in Daegu and craving a hearty meal or a refreshing seafood stew, give it a visit.
