Solo weekday lunch galbitang with self-refill sides: Morakmorak Ansan

In short

Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch is a butcher-shop-style Korean restaurant in the basement of a shopping complex in Seongpo-dong, Ansan. Visiting alone on a weekday at 1pm, the writer ordered the meat-packed galbitang (beef short rib soup) for ₩14,000, finding the ribs so tender they slid right off the bone in a rich, deeply flavored broth. Basic side dishes come first with self-serve refills after, making it easy to finish the whole bowl solo without any pressure.

A bowl of galbitang at Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch

I was looking for somewhere to eat lunch alone on a weekday and ended up trying Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch for the first time. Instead of the seolleongtang, I ordered the galbitang loaded with meat that day.

It was my first time here, but after eating I could see why the place is so busy haha. Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch is run alongside a butcher shop, and beyond seolleongtang and galbitang, they sell a variety of meat-based dishes like yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef mixed rice) and braised pork ribs.

A basement market-style neighborhood restaurant vibe

One distinctive feature was the open kitchen, where you could see the cooking area. The location felt like an old-school neighborhood favorite tucked inside a market or shopping arcade, and honestly, I really love that kind of atmosphere!

Interior of the basement, neighborhood-style restaurant

It has a totally different charm from all the trendy, aesthetic restaurants these days — it felt like the kind of place local residents keep coming back to, which got me excited even just walking in.

Busy even at 1pm on a weekday

I visited around 1pm on a weekday. Since it was a bit past the lunch rush, I figured I could eat leisurely on my own, but I was surprised at how many customers were still there.

Even past peak time, quite a few people were still eating, which made me think 'this must really be a well-known spot in the neighborhood.' It felt totally comfortable to eat alone here too, so it seems like a good pick for anyone looking for a place to dine solo in Ansan.

Galbitang set up for a solo meal

Meat-packed hearty galbitang, ₩14,000

What I ordered was the meat-packed hearty galbitang. Price: ₩14,000! Since the name promised plenty of meat, I was curious how much would actually be in there — and when it arrived, the chunky ribs made it look pretty filling.

Given what a bowl of galbitang costs these days, the amount of meat made for a satisfying deal. Best of all, the ribs were incredibly tender! I picked up the meat with my chopsticks and it slid right off the bone without much effort at all.

Instead of clinging stubbornly to the bone, the meat separated smoothly and was soft and tender to eat. Broth matters a lot in galbitang, but tough meat can be a real letdown — here, the fun of eating the meat itself was definitely there.

How was the broth?

And what I liked best was, of course, the broth! It wasn't a clear, light galbitang broth — it was rich, with the flavor of the meat fully infused.

Taking a sip of the hot broth and then mixing rice into it, I understood why this dish is the definition of a solid, filling meal haha. Sitting quietly by myself and finishing every last bit of the broth, I ended up completely full.

Self-refill side dishes

The side dish setup alongside the galbitang was great too. They bring out the basic sides first, and after that, you can help yourself to refills of whatever you want more of.

It was convenient to grab as much as I needed, and pairing a side dish with each spoonful of hot galbitang let me enjoy the bowl all the way to the end. The owner and staff were also friendly, which made it easy to eat comfortably even on my first visit — something that stuck with me.

Honestly, for neighborhood restaurants, the taste of the food matters, but this kind of comfortable atmosphere is often what brings people back. The friendly service layered on top of that cozy, market-like vibe actually made me like it even more.

Worth coming back to for a solo meal?

This was my first visit to Morakmorak Seolleongtang, and I think I now understand why it's still busy even past the weekday lunch rush. It's not a flashy-looking restaurant — it's the kind of place that comes to mind when you want a filling meal with hot broth and plenty of meat. The ribs falling right off the bone and the rich broth made it especially satisfying.

Next time, I'd like to try their signature seolleongtang or the yukhoe bibimbap. If you're looking for a good restaurant in Seongpo-dong, Ansan, or a hearty bowl of soup you can enjoy comfortably alone, give Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch a try. I love this kind of market-style neighborhood spot, so it was even more appealing to me :)
