Medium mixed hot pot for three at Hongdae restaurant Yukjeon Gukbap

In short

Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch is a 24-hour Korean restaurant a 5-minute walk from Hongdae Station Exit 1 in Mapo, Seoul. Three friends shared the medium mixed yukjeon hot pot with an added bowl of rice for dinner, and the yukjeon (pan-fried beef) turned soft and juicy once it soaked up the broth. With solo dishes like gukbap (rice and soup) and makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) alongside hot pots made for sharing, Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch is easy to choose no matter how many people come.

Table setting with the yukjeon mixed hot pot at Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch

We were looking for somewhere to eat dinner with friends in Hongdae and ended up at Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch! The name made me think it was mostly gukbap (rice and soup), but looking at the menu there was actually a lot more — makguksu (buckwheat noodles), yukjeon, and hot pots too. There were three of us that day, and instead of each getting our own gukbap, we felt like something we could all cook together, so we ordered the medium size yukjeon mixed hot pot. Once we got into it we obviously needed rice too, so we added a bowl of rice haha.

It was good for three people having dinner, and it felt like the kind of Hongdae Station restaurant you'd think of when you want a hearty, warm bowl of soup ♥

Inside Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch: the room and the self-serve side dish bar

Walking into Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch, there were more seats than I expected. It was clean and tidy overall, and there were separate seats set up for solo dining too. It looked comfortable whether you came alone or, like us, came with a group of friends to share a hot pot. Basic side dishes come out automatically, and you can grab more from the self-serve bar as needed. When you're eating soup dishes you end up reaching for kimchi or diced radish kimchi over and over haha, so it was convenient being able to just get more yourself.

Menu at Yukjeon Gukbap: gukbap, makguksu and hot pots

The menu at Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch was more varied than I expected. On top of yukjeon gukbap, there was beef gukbap and gomtang (bone broth soup), plus noodle dishes like yukjeon bibim makguksu, yukjeon mul makguksu, and perilla oil makguksu. And for evening visits with a group, the hot pots looked good too — beef tripe hot pot, beef bulgogi hot pot, and the yukjeon mixed hot pot we ordered. I assumed a gukbap place would only have single-serving bowls, but they also had dishes you can share with a group, which made it a solid choice for dinner.

The medium mixed yukjeon hot pot, shared between three people

The yukjeon mixed hot pot finally arrived! It's a dish you simmer at the table, so it was nice and hot as soon as it came out. There were a bunch of ingredients in there together, so it was fun fishing them out one by one, and being able to eat the broth along with it made me feel like we'd picked a good dinner option. I especially liked how the yukjeon soaked up the broth and got a little more moist and juicy.

A piece of yukjeon lifted out, soaked in broth

Pick out a piece of yukjeon, eat some of the other ingredients, then take a sip of the hot broth haha — it was a good dish for three of us to share, sitting in the middle of the table. As the weather starts cooling down a bit, this kind of hot, hearty hot pot really hits the spot.

Why you should add a bowl of rice to the hot pot

And in the end we ordered a bowl of rice too! Once you order something with hot pot broth, you can't not eat rice with it haha. Putting some of the hot pot ingredients over warm rice and eating them together, then scooping up broth in between, made it much more filling. There were three of us, and having the yukjeon mixed hot pot along with rice made for a solid dinner. Personally, if you order the yukjeon mixed hot pot, I'd recommend getting a bowl of rice with it too — the combo of broth and rice really is great haha.

Is Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch good for a group in Hongdae?

There are so many great restaurants in Hongdae, but it's honestly kind of hard to decide what to eat once you actually get a group of friends together. Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch had a decent range of choices — gukbap or makguksu you can eat on your own, plus hot pot dishes you can share with others. Coming alone, a bowl of gukbap works well; coming with friends, ordering a hot pot like we did seems like a good call too. The three of us had the medium yukjeon mixed hot pot with rice, and it was a satisfying, warm meal to walk away from haha. On top of everything, being close to Hongdae Station made it easy to set as a meeting spot.

If you're in Hongdae looking for something more than just gukbap — a hot, shareable dish for a group — the yukjeon mixed hot pot at Yukjeon Gukbap Seogyo Branch is worth trying. With gukbap, makguksu, yukjeon, and hot pot all on the menu, plus 24-hour hours for late-night meals, it's a convenient spot. If three of you are going, like us, try the yukjeon mixed hot pot with rice haha. I think this will come to mind again the next time I'm craving something hot and hearty while looking for a good restaurant near Hongdae Station ♥
