Gongneung-dong, which stretches along the old railway line, is a great spot for a date — restaurants, cafés, walking paths, and little shops are all clustered together.

I want to introduce a restaurant perfect for anniversaries, dates, or engagement meetings — honestly, I don't think there's anywhere in Gongneung-dong with a better atmosphere. My husband and I hadn't been on a date in a while, so this felt like being back in the early, fluttery days of dating.
Where is LA RUELLE in Gongneung-dong, and what are its hours?

LA RUELLE is on the 2nd floor of 18 Gongneung-ro 35-gil, Nowon-gu, Seoul. Hours are daily 11:30–23:00, with a break time daily from 15:00–17:30, and it's closed every Monday.
LA RUELLE is a hidden gem I found in the alleys of the Gongni-dan-gil street. Not-so-common French cuisine at prices that aren't intimidating — it's already word-of-mouth famous.

Open the door and it feels like you've walked straight into France — a real Gongneung-dong date spot.
Is LA RUELLE a good setting for a date or a group dinner?

The tiled floor and tables at LA RUELLE feel like a terrace of a restaurant on a French street. It brought back memories of struggling to drag my suitcase over European cobblestones — but looking back, even that struggle turned into a fond memory haha.

With the warm interior, I ended up taking a lot of photos for the first time in a while. The sunlight pouring in through the floor-to-ceiling windows made it feel just right for a glass of wine. When I visited, the crowd was a real mix — people on engagement meetings, moms out with daughters, and couples too.
LA RUELLE's menu and its MBTI wine recommendations

Here's the full menu from this Gongneung-dong date at LA RUELLE.

French cuisine isn't something we encounter often, so it's hard to imagine the taste from the dish names alone. That's exactly where you can feel the owner's thoughtfulness toward guests — every ingredient and flavor note is written out carefully.

There's also a fun little detail on the menu — scan the QR code and

you get a wine recommendation list matched to your MBTI, which I found genuinely fun. I don't know much about wine, but experiencing it this way made it feel a little more approachable.
Free appetizer and onion soup, 14,000 won

The finger-food appetizer comes at no extra charge. Shrimp and pistachio finger food was plenty to whet the appetite.

Onion soup, ₩14,000. A soup where caramelized onions, a broth simmered for 16 hours, and Gruyère cheese come together fully in every mouthful.

Slow-cooked to pull out the maximum sweetness from the onions, then layered with cheese for extra richness — this is a dish I always order whenever I have French food.

The onion soup pairs even better with baguette.
Gratin & blue, 15,000 won

Gratin & blue, ₩15,000, is an oven-baked dish of mashed baby potatoes with blue cheese sauce, mozzarella, and Gruyère cheese.
If you're someone who likes a rich, savory gratin, this one won't disappoint. Fluffy potatoes plus deep cheese flavor — a combination that never fails, as we all know.
Main dish: magret de canard duck breast, 29,000 won

Magret de canard, ₩29,000. The duck breast is sous-vide cooked, then pan-fried to crisp the skin, served with a red wine orange sauce as the main dish.

The duck breast was cooked so moist it practically melted.

Paired with roasted vegetables and carrot purée, it felt like a party in my mouth. Honestly, when it comes to date or engagement-meeting spots, Western food often means the same old dishes, so sometimes you just crave something different. This is the exact kind of French restaurant to visit for that craving.
Bisque pasta, 18,000 won

Bisque pasta, ₩18,000, is made with spot shrimp bisque, shrimp, and linguine, giving it a real crustacean flavor.
LA RUELLE's bisque pasta fully captures the flavor of spot shrimp. If you're someone who enjoys the flavor of crab or shrimp roe, you'll likely love this thick, savory sauce.

I personally love the scent of dill, and here it added a nice freshness.

It comes with 2 spot shrimp and 2 cocktail shrimp, so we split them evenly between us.
Review event: fried zucchini flowers with ricotta

Fried zucchini flower with ricotta cheese (review event item). Ricotta cheese stuffed inside a zucchini flower and fried — a dessert I was trying for the first time. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, it reminded me a bit of a fried eggplant stuffed with cheese. It's offered when you take part in the receipt review event, so definitely try it.
Why LA RUELLE works as a date restaurant in Gongneung-dong
LA RUELLE, a French restaurant I visited for a long-overdue date with my husband. We went through everything from appetizer to dessert like a full course, and it was satisfying enough that I'd love to come back next time with my mom — a real Gongneung-dong find. If you're looking for a date spot with great food in Gongneung-dong, or an engagement-meeting venue with something a little different on the menu, I'd strongly recommend this place.
