Gochujang stone-grilled galbi set in Oryu-dong, Daejeon: Idobonga

In short

Idobonga is a stone-grilled galbi (marinated short rib) restaurant in Oryu-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, on the second floor of the Sky Palace building right next to Seodaejeon Station. The writer and her husband ordered the gochujang stone-grilled galbi set for two at 18,000 won each and added steamed egg, and the table came with 12 side dishes plus a doenjang (soybean paste) stew with blue crab in it. The meat was tender rather than chewy, and the free americano after the meal made the set feel like good value.

😃 Today I was craving good stone-grilled galbi, so my husband and I went to Idobonga's Daejeon main branch, a restaurant near Seodaejeon Station close to our house.

Inside Idobonga: room layout and tables

It's right next to Seodaejeon Station, and the interior has full glass windows that make it feel bright and open!

Rows of certificates and patent-related frames lined the wall, and below them there were portable charger cables and Febreze set out too. I loved that there were so many charger cables. Nice touch, boss 👍

Every table has an ordering tablet, plus pink salt and an electric black pepper grinder. There was also a Thor's hammer bottle opener standing on the table that I really wanted to take home. Where did you even find this, haha?

Turns out the stone-grilled galbi comes in two flavors! We went with the gochujang version!

The 12 side dishes that arrive first

Plates of acorn jelly salad, kimchi, and other side dishes

Oh my gosh, look at these side dishes... a whopping 12 of them!!! Acorn jelly salad, seokbakji radish kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, sautéed zucchini, seasoned bellflower root, stir-fried anchovies with peppers, lettuce for wraps, sweet pumpkin salad, corn salad, baek kimchi, braised quail eggs, mung bean sprouts, and pickled garlic.

The galbi hadn't even come out yet, but there were already enough delicious side dishes to finish a whole bowl of rice. Overall the seasoning was clean and not overpowering, and every single one tasted great.

The stone-grilled galbi set comes with a doenjang (soybean paste) stew too, and it had crab in it! The stew was a bit spicy. I wanted steamed egg so we ordered it separately, and I'm so glad we did. It was so good! 😆

How the gochujang stone-grilled galbi tasted

The galbi came out last! It was piled high with green onions, with onions grilling underneath — and you know how good those leftover grilled onions at the bottom of the stone plate are, right, haha.

The meat wasn't chewy at all, super tender. The sweet and salty gochujang marinade blended perfectly with the sweetness of the onions and green onions — so good!

Here's a video I took once both servings of the stone-grilled galbi set were fully plated — looks pretty generous, right? 😊 The sizzling sound is delicious too. It's hot, so be careful, be very careful!

Building the perfect stone-grilled galbi lettuce wrap

I love eating wraps! Piling rice, a thick piece of stone-grilled galbi, green onion strips, and spicy bellflower root salad onto a lettuce leaf and wrapping it all up makes for a perfect bite.
