Fanchal steak cooked medium at Plate, a Sunhwa-dong date spot in

In short

Plate is a fresh pasta and steak restaurant tucked in a Sunhwa-dong alley in Jung-gu, Daejeon. Each menu item comes with a recommended noodle, so the steak cream ragù was ordered with pappardelle while the fanchal (skirt) steak came medium with grilled cabbage, mashed potato and wholegrain mustard on the side. Nearly every table was on a date thanks to the cozy mood, making it a solid pick for a Daejeon date dinner.

I stopped by Plate, a cute little spot that caught my eye in a Sunhwa-dong alley. They had a great variety of pastas, and I loved that you could pick your noodle to suit your taste.

Plate always caught my eye with its romantic, almost Christmas-like atmosphere. It's a 5-minute walk from Jungangno Station Exit 6, so it's easy to get to. Parking is cheap at the nearby public lot, and it's free on weekends and holidays, so it's convenient whether you come on foot or by car.

Interior mood and seating

The interior has a cute, warm feel too, so I'd recommend it as a Daejeon date spot 🤍 Honestly, almost every table was on a date haha. It's cozy but the four-person tables have plenty of spacing, so eating was really comfortable. There was even a coat hanger, which felt like a nice touch. The open kitchen you can see into was clean too 👍🏻

The paper order sheet with noodle choices

You fill out a paper sheet at the table to order. It's been a while since I've seen this kind of analog order sheet, so it felt kind of nostalgic haha. Tablet ordering is convenient too, but this ajumma prefers this kind of thing >..< lol

You can pick your own noodle, and each menu item also lists a recommended noodle, so I went with the recommendation without much thought haha. As befits a pasta restaurant in Daejeon, they make the fresh noodles themselves! I'm a gnocchi lover so the potato gnocchi caught my eye too — next time~~🤍 That day I was craving cream pasta so I ordered the steak cream ragù and the fanchal steak!

The steak cream ragù pasta came out first! I went with the recommended pappardelle. It was described as having a wide, doughy texture like sujebi (hand-torn noodle soup), and the sauce clung to the noodles beautifully — there's a reason it's the recommended pairing!!

The steak seemed to have been cooked low and slow — no dark or overdone bits, just moist and tender, and my friend who came with me enjoyed it a lot. It was my first time trying a cream ragù, and it was savory and full of character! It wasn't the carbonara flavor I usually think of, but it was addictive haha🧡🧡

The fanchal steak, cooked medium

The fanchal (skirt) steak 🤍🤍 I actually love meat seared over high heat, so I enjoyed this steak even more, hehe. It came on a hot plate with grilled cabbage, mashed potato, wholegrain mustard and sauce.

The cross-section 🧡🧡 It's served medium by default but you can ask for a different doneness. I had it medium and it was just right! The combo of steak, cabbage, wholegrain mustard and potato sauce was perfect. If you're craving steak in Daejeon, it seems reasonably priced too.

There's salt and pepper on the table too, so you can season it to your taste.

A totally clean plate haha. I even got a pickle refill. The ragù sauce was so savory I scraped it up with a spoon lol lol

The photo spot at the entrance

There was a mirror and memo pads by the entrance that were great for photos. It gave off a bit of a Namsan Tower vibe, so cute lol❤️❤️ With its romantic mood all around, I'd recommend this as a Daejeon date restaurant.
