Daejeon Japanese restaurant with aged kimchi tuna maki: Choi Dining

In short

Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong is a Japanese restaurant in Gwanpyeong-dong, Yuseong, Daejeon, serving futomaki, maki and donkatsu (pork cutlet). Three generations — the writer, her child and her mother — shared tempura futomaki, aged kimchi tuna maki and Choi bone-in donkatsu, with the donkatsu sauce served on the side by request. A baby chair was ready and Hyundai Outlet is close by, so Choi Dining works well as a meal before or after shopping.

This time I went for dinner at Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong with Siu and my mom 🍣 I was looking for dinner options in Gwanpyeong-dong and decided to go get futomaki and donkatsu (pork cutlet). It's also close to Hyundai Outlet, so it seemed like a great spot to eat before or after shopping.

Parking: three free spaces in front of Choi Dining

There's room for about 3 cars right in front of the restaurant, and if that's full you can use the public parking lot nearby. We were able to park right in front, which was really convenient 😊

Inside Choi Dining: a clean, relaxed dining room

The exterior of the restaurant had a clean, tidy look.

Once we stepped inside, the whole interior was neatly arranged too. The tables were set up nicely, so it felt like a good spot for meals with friends, and just as comfortable for a family visit.

Baby chair ready at Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong

For those of us visiting with a little one, there was a welcome baby chair ready 👶🏻 When I eat out with Siu, checking for a baby chair is always the first thing on my mind, so this was a nice touch.

What we ordered at Choi Dining Gwanpyeong

Table with futomaki, maki, and donkatsu

That day we ordered tempura futomaki, aged kimchi tuna maki, and Choi bone-in donkatsu. With futomaki, maki, and donkatsu all on the menu, it seemed like a great place for adults and kids to each pick what they wanted.

Aged kimchi tuna maki: tangy, cool and refreshing

We started with the aged kimchi tuna maki. The soft flavor of the tuna paired with the tangy, refreshing taste of the aged kimchi, and honestly it worked better than I expected. Thanks to that distinctly tangy, cooling kimchi flavor, it didn't feel heavy at all despite being maki — it ate really clean. This was actually my mom's favorite dish of the night 😊

It's delicious plain, but also great dipped in mustard sauce or with a little wasabi on top. The sharp kick of the mustard sauce or the zing of wasabi gave it a whole different feel. If you like aged kimchi, this one is worth trying.

Tempura futomaki: crisp and nutty

Next up was the tempura futomaki. There's tempura tucked inside the futomaki, so the first bite had a crispy texture.

We dipped it in the sesame sauce. The nutty sesame sauce and crispy tempura went really well together, making it even more delicious. The filling was generous too, so a few pieces in, it felt surprisingly filling, and the crunchy tempura texture made it fun to chew through 😊

Choi bone-in donkatsu shared with a child, sauce on the side

And then, the Choi bone-in donkatsu we ordered to share with Siu! Since we planned to eat it together with him, we asked for the sauce on the side. We could set aside Siu's portion without sauce and add sauce to ours separately, which made things easy.

I wondered if Siu would eat the donkatsu well, but he actually ate it better than expected 😊 When you eat out with a kid, you tend to worry about seasoning or sauces, so being able to request sauce on the side like this was great. Thanks to that, we could comfortably share the dish with Siu.

Is Choi Dining Gwanpyeong good for a meal with kids?

This time we visited with Siu, and having the baby chair ready plus being able to request the donkatsu sauce on the side made it a good place to eat with a kid. The adults had futomaki and maki while we shared donkatsu with Siu, so choosing what to order wasn't a hassle at all.

A Gwanpyeong-dong restaurant for dinner before or after Hyundai Outlet

Overall, Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong was great because we could enjoy futomaki, maki, and donkatsu all together. Being near Hyundai Outlet was another plus. It's a good place to grab lunch before shopping or stop by for dinner afterward, and it's a solid choice when you're looking for somewhere to eat lunch or dinner in Gwanpyeong-dong. If you're craving futomaki or donkatsu in Gwanpyeong-dong, or looking for a good restaurant near Hyundai Outlet, give Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong a try 💕
