Paju dumpling restaurant for weekday 8pm dinner with mom: Bubyeokjeong

In short

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is a Pyeongyang-style dumpling restaurant on Jimok-ro in Paju, Gyeonggi, a short drive from Paju Lotte Outlet, Heyri Art Village and Paju Book City, so it works as a meal stop before or after shopping. On a weekday visit at 8pm with my mom, we ordered Pyeongyang mandu soup at 11,000 won, mandu jjabagi (spicy dumpling stew) at 12,000 won and a half plate of arongsatae suyuk (boiled beef shank) at 17,000 won — my mom went for the mild soup while I preferred the spicier jjabagi. With free traditional cookies and a misutgaru (roasted grain drink) slushie to finish, Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu made for a full, satisfying dinner.

I was looking for somewhere solid to eat before or after shopping at Paju Lotte Outlet, and ended up at Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu (부벽정평양만두)! Paju has no shortage of good restaurants, but since I was going with my mom that day, I wanted something mild and hearty rather than anything too spicy or heavy.

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu specializes in Pyeongyang-style dumplings, which seemed like a good fit for a meal with my mom, so I went straight there.

Where is Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu, and what are its hours and parking?

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is at 129 Jimok-ro, Building La, 1st Floor, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, open daily from 11am to 9pm (last order at 8pm). It's near Unjeong, Heyri Art Village, the Paju Book City, and Simhaksan. It's also a convenient stop to pair with a trip to Paju Lotte Outlet — in fact, when I searched around, it kept coming up as a recommended restaurant near the outlet.

There's also a large parking lot, so it was easy to visit by car.

Inside, the restaurant is decorated in white and wood tones, giving it a clean, warm atmosphere overall.

The lighting was cozy and the tables were fairly spacious, making it comfortable for family meals. We visited around 8pm on a weekday and there were still quite a few diners. In particular, there were a lot of older customers, which gave me the impression that it's a good spot to bring parents. Each table has a kiosk, so you can browse the menu and order right from your seat.

We ordered three dishes that day: Pyeongyang mandu soup, mandu jjabagi, and half a plate of arongsatae suyuk!

Overall the restaurant was spacious and clean, with plenty of room between tables — comfortable for a family visit.

They also had baby dishware and a microwave for warming baby food for parents visiting with kids, plus baby chairs!!

It was also convenient that you could help yourself to as many side dishes or broth as you needed from the self-serve corner.

Pyeongyang mandu soup, 11,000 won: the mild bowl my mom loved

A bowl of Pyeongyang mandu soup with large dumplings

First up is the Pyeongyang mandu soup my mom ordered. It's a broth simmered from 1++ grade hanwoo (Korean beef) with Pyeongyang-style dumplings in it.

The dumplings are seriously huge. There are a whopping 5 in one bowl, so if you like dumplings, this alone could be plenty filling. The broth looks quite plain, but don't assume it'll taste bland just from the visuals. Because it's simmered from 1++ hanwoo, you could really taste the deep flavor coming from the meat.

Lifting a dumpling out of the Pyeongyang mandu soup

My mom took one bite and said it was delicious, and she really dug in. True to Pyeongyang-style dumplings, the filling wasn't overly seasoned and had a clean, mild flavor. The dumpling wrapper was soft too, and the filling was packed full, so soaking it in the broth made it even tastier. I tried a bit of the broth myself, and it was clean but had a subtly deep flavor that went really well with rice! My mom especially loved the Pyeongyang mandu soup, so if you're visiting with your parents, I'd recommend this dish!

Mandu jjabagi, 12,000 won: the best dish of the night

A bowl of spicy mandu jjabagi broth

And the dish I ordered was mandu jjabagi. Of everything we ate that day, this was my favorite!! From the moment I saw it on the menu, the broth looked pretty spicy, so I picked it right away. And when I actually tried it, it tasted exactly like yukgaejang (spicy beef soup).

Inside the mandu jjabagi with dumplings and hanwoo beef

With the mild Pyeongyang-style dumplings dropped into the hot, spicy broth, the plain dumplings and the fiery broth turned out to be a surprisingly great match. Inside there were plenty of dumplings and a generous amount of hanwoo beef too.

The broth itself is spicy, and with all that meat packed in, it went really well with rice. I kept going — a spoonful of soup, a bite of rice, more soup — over and over haha. My mom liked the mild Pyeongyang mandu soup, but this was clearly more my style! The spicy, fiery broth really woke up my appetite, and I enjoyed the mandu jjabagi a lot. It has a completely different vibe from the mandu soup, so ordering both and sharing might be a great idea.

Arongsatae suyuk half plate, 17,000 won: just right for two

Half plate of arongsatae suyuk served with chives

The last dish, arongsatae suyuk, lets you enjoy tender boiled brisket with chives in a mild, clean way. Since we'd ordered several dishes already, a full plate seemed like too much, so we went with the half plate. It was nice that they offer a half-plate option, so even a small group can try a variety of dishes. The brisket was cooked nice and soft — you could feel the tender texture the moment you picked it up with chopsticks.

At first I tried the meat with just the chives, no sauce. You could really taste the clean flavor of the meat itself, and the fragrant chives made it feel light and refreshing.

Next I dipped it lightly in the accompanying sauce, which had a tangy flavor that paired really well with the brisket.

Dipping arongsatae suyuk into the tangy sauce

Personally, I liked eating the arongsatae suyuk alongside the mandu dishes — the combination worked well. Next time I visit with a bigger group, I'd like to order a full plate and enjoy it more generously haha.

Can you take the mandu soup and mandu hot pot home?

You can get the mandu soup and mandu hot pot packed to go! My mom agonized over whether to take some home for my dad, but he'd already had dinner, so we went home empty-handed this time... She said it was so good she wanted to bring some home for the family haha.

Free traditional cookies and misutgaru slushie to finish

One thing I was almost as excited about as the meal itself was the dessert corner!! At the self-serve station there was a whole lineup of nostalgic traditional snacks — rice cake crackers, rice crackers, injeolmi (sweet rice cake) crackers, and puffed rice snacks. You just scoop whatever you want into a paper cup, and for me, the injeolmi crackers were the best. Nutty and sweet — once I started, I couldn't stop grabbing more haha.

And you could also get a misutgaru (roasted grain drink) slushie for free. The ice machine was properly churning out slush, so you could enjoy the cool misutgaru slushie-style.

My stomach was already completely full, but this was so good I basically drank the whole thing in one go haha.

The place is popular enough that they even have a separate waiting area with chairs!! Nice touch.

Why Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is a good dinner spot with parents

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu reportedly started from a grandfather's longing for his hometown of Pyeongyang, and maybe that's why the place feels less like a simple dumpling shop and more like it carries a genuine 'taste of home' concept throughout.

Another plus is that on top of the clear, deep 1++ hanwoo broth and the mild Pyeongyang-style dumplings, you can also enjoy a variety of other dishes like the mandu hot pot, mandu jjabagi, and arongsatae suyuk. Visiting with my mom that day, she really enjoyed the mild, deep-flavored Pyeongyang mandu soup, while I liked the spicy, fiery mandu jjabagi best. Adding the tender arongsatae suyuk on top meant we got to enjoy a nice variety.

After the meal, finishing off with the free traditional snacks and misutgaru slushie made it a satisfying meal from start to end. Especially if you're going shopping at Paju Lotte Outlet and looking for somewhere nearby to eat well, this is a good spot to pair with your trip.

It would suit family dinners with parents, meals with kids, or a meal before or after shopping at the Paju outlets. If you like spicy broth like I do, definitely try the mandu jjabagi.

The mandu jjabagi was my favorite dish of the day, so if I come back, I'll probably order it again! But I also want to try the mandu hot pot, so next time I'll have to come with a bigger group haha. If you're looking for a great Pyeongyang mandu restaurant in Paju, or somewhere clean and hearty to eat near Paju Lotte Outlet, I highly recommend Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu!
