Aewol brunch in Jeju: cast-iron pot hangover soup at Aewol Eomma

In short

Aewol Eomma is a hangover soup restaurant on Ilju-seoro in Aewol, Jeju, reopened in 2026 under a new name after operating as Hanjil-dongne. After an hour's drive from a guesthouse in Pyoseon, arriving at Aewol Eomma at noon meant two bowls of Aewol Eomma haejangguk (hangover soup) as a late breakfast, with the garlic scape pickles refilled the moment they were asked for. The best part was the cast-iron pot in place of the usual earthenware bowl, which kept the broth hot right down to the last spoonful of rice.

I checked out of my Pyoseon accommodation at eleven and headed over to the west side of Jeju. I'd booked a table for one o'clock but ended up arriving just after noon. Even though I was earlier than my reservation, the staff happily seated me right away. Since I hadn't eaten breakfast, I was starving, so the two of us decided to settle our Aewol brunch with hangover soup.

Where Aewol Eomma is, parking, and how far it is from Jeju Airport

It's about a 30-minute drive from Jeju International Airport, right along the route toward Aewol, Hyeopjae, and Geumneung. Keep driving another 10 minutes or so along Aewol Haeanro and you'll hit Handam Coastal Walkway. It seems like a great stop for a first meal after picking up your rental car, or a last meal before heading to the airport.

I thought the drive from Pyoseon would take an hour and a half, but it only took about an hour. It worked out well as a late breakfast on the day we moved from the east side of Jeju to the west. After eating here, we stopped by Aewol Bon Cafe before returning our rental car at Jeju Airport.

The address is 6699 Ilju-seoro, Aewol-eup, Jeju-si, 50m west of Sinuem Middle School. I parked right in front of the restaurant. There's room for several cars in front and more spots to the side, so you don't need to worry about parking.

For reference, this place used to run for a long time under the name Hanjil-dongne, but in 2026 it rebranded as Aewol Eomma and got a full renovation. If you have it saved on your map as Hanjil-dongne, it's the same restaurant.

Inside Aewol Eomma: the dining room and booking a table

The whole place is done up in mint. From the sign to the door to the walls, the tone carries through consistently, so it catches your eye from a distance. Stepping inside felt more like walking into a café than a hangover soup restaurant. The floors, tables, even the corners all looked well kept.

We had a reservation, but there was already a table open when we arrived, so we sat down right away without waiting. We took a window seat and ate at a relaxed pace.

A couple of tables of locals came in while we were eating, which made it clear why this place has a reputation as a local favorite. The tables are also spaced generously, so it looks like it would work fine for group visits too.

What's on the menu at Aewol Eomma

Hangover soup is the main draw, but there's also beef radish soup and sundubu (soft tofu stew), so there's something to choose even if you're dining with someone who can't handle spicy food. Mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) is a seasonal menu item, so it may vary depending on when you visit.

We both went with the signature Aewol Eomma hangover soup.

Side dishes and the garlic scape pickle refill

Once you order, the side dishes come out first. Kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), garlic scape pickles, seasoned garlic scapes, and salted squid — it wasn't just a lot of dishes for the sake of it, each one was seasoned well.

Among them, the garlic scapes in the pickle suited my taste the most. Crunchy and not too salty, I kept picking at them and eventually asked for more — the moment I said something, they refilled it right away, no need to feel awkward about asking.

Refilled garlic scape pickles with a bowl of rice

Eating alongside side dishes that clearly had some real skill behind them, one bowl of rice wasn't quite enough, but we made do.

How Aewol Eomma's hangover soup and seasoning paste taste

Aewol Eomma hangover soup with brisket and shank

It's a richly simmered ox bone broth loaded with brisket, shank, and beef tripe all together. If you're not picky, the fully-loaded Aewol Eomma hangover soup seems like the way to go. Hot and spicy in a way that really clears your head — it felt like it was curing last night's drinking.

Spicy seasoning sauce to add into the hangover soup

If you want it spicier, they give you a separate seasoning sauce to add in. The more you add, the spicier it gets, so you can adjust the heat to your own taste.

Dipping soup ingredients into the sauce

The sauce they served alongside was on the sweeter side, and dipping the meat in it slightly tones down the spice. And here's the unusual part — it doesn't come out in a stone bowl, but in a cast-iron pot.

This was the first time I'd seen hangover soup served in a Le Creuset, and I loved that the soup stayed hot until we finished all the rice. They even gave us a separate handle cover in case the pot got too hot to touch — I'd never seen a place hand that out ahead of time.

Why Aewol Eomma works for an early breakfast or brunch in Aewol

It opens at six in the morning and closes at three in the afternoon. Last order is at two-thirty. Since you can get a hot bowl of soup starting from six, it's a solid choice on a day when you're moving around early. Stopping by around noon for an Aewol brunch worked well too. There's no dinner service, so make sure to check the hours before you go — but if you're weighing options for Aewol brunch or breakfast, this one's worth a visit.
