On our summer vacation trip to Jeju we hit up all kinds of good restaurants, and since gogi-guksu (pork noodle soup) is a must-eat when you're on Jeju, we went to Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch — famous as one of the go-to gogi-guksu restaurants for Jeju trips and a lunch spot in Aewol.

Arriving at 1pm: how long is the wait, and the free drink

Handam Guksu, a well-known gogi-guksu restaurant in Aewol, Jeju, has a reputation as one of the go-to spots for tasting real Jeju flavors. Maybe because of that, when we showed up a bit after lunchtime at 1pm, there was quite a wait. Since there's basically always a line, they've set up a waiting area right in front of the restaurant. And if you wait more than 30 minutes, the owner even brings out drinks for you — such a thoughtful touch.

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch sits right on the Handam Beach walking path, so the big windows look straight out onto the beach, and every seat in the restaurant has that open ocean view — you get to enjoy the taste of Jeju while surrounded by the scenery of Jeju.

Self-serve side dishes and kids' forks and plates

There's a neat self-serve bar at the entrance where you can help yourself to side dishes like kimchi, pickled radish, peppers, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste). Maybe because so many families with kids visit, Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch also keeps kids' forks, dishware, and small plates on hand, which made things nice and easy for us.

Handam Guksu, located on Handam Beach in Aewol, Jeju, is a proper local favorite, with bone-broth pork noodles, dongchimi bibim noodles, mala pork noodles, and pork gukbap (rice soup) on the menu, plus sides made from Jeju black pork like dombe suyuk (sliced boiled pork) and handmade black pork tteokgalbi (short rib patties).

We ordered the rich bone-broth pork noodles, dongchimi bibim noodles, and mala pork noodles.

Rich bone-broth pork noodles

Handam Guksu's rich bone-broth pork noodles feature a clean, deep broth simmered for a long time, generously loaded with Jeju pork. Even though it's pork noodle soup, there was no off pork smell at all — the clean, refreshing broth paired really well with the noodles, and the pork on top was tender and delicious.

Mala pork noodles

Handam Guksu's mala pork noodles take that savory bone-broth base and add a spicy mala kick with a nutty peanut sauce. The mala flavor was distinctive and worked really well with the pork noodles. Our first kid, who's obsessed with mala tang (spicy numbing soup), absolutely loved it.

Dongchimi bibim noodles (cold noodles in radish water kimchi)

The dongchimi (radish water kimchi) bibim noodles had chewy noodles and plenty of vegetables that paired well with the spicy seasoning, topped with a generous amount of hand-shredded Jeju pork loin — mixed together it made for a mild, tender combination that was a real treat. The dongchimi broth is served on the side so you can add as much as you like to taste.

Eaten alongside the kimchi, pickled radish, and green chili peppers we grabbed from the self-serve bar, the noodles' flavor doubles.
