Beomeo-dong izakaya in Daegu: pork jowl fried rice at Wakoan

In short

Izakaya Wakoan Suseong Beomeo Branch is a Japanese-style pub in Beomeo-dong near Suseonggucheong Station in Suseong-gu, Daegu. Sitting at the bar table after work, the writer ordered pork jowl hot plate fried rice for 20,000 won, grilled chicken neck for 15,000 won and fried eggplant for 10,000 won, with potato salad and crackers served as the complimentary starter. Wakoan works just as well for a full dinner with no drinks at all.

Today I came to an izakaya with a friend after work~~! Since it was a weekday, I was looking for somewhere casual to meet, and an izakaya popped into my head! I came to a place I'd always wanted to try whenever I passed by.

Where is Izakaya Wakoan Suseong Beomeo Branch, and when is it open?

The izakaya 'Wakoan' comes into view right after a short walk from Suseonggucheong Station. The clean signage, wood wall, and details like the side-opening automatic door really capture the izakaya mood!

Wakoan menu board displayed outside the shop

Outside, they had a menu board displayed so passersby could see it. With appetizing food photos on it, quite a few people stopped walking to look before coming in!

Inside Wakoan: seating options and do you need a reservation?

Seating at Wakoan Suseong Beomeo Branch consists of a bar table, private tables for 4 and 6, and an open 4-seat table, so you can sit in various group sizes. Even around 6pm on a weekday, customers kept coming in, so I'd recommend reserving.

Once you step inside, the wood interior gives a cozy feel and shows off the izakaya vibe everywhere you look.

The seats are a bar table, private tables for 4 and 6 people, and an open 4-seat table. Tables are ready to accommodate various group combinations.

At the entrance they had mouthwash, Febreze, and toothpicks set out — I thought, this is thoughtful!

My friend and I were just two people today, so we sat at the bar table. Even though it was a weekday, customers kept streaming in after us around 6pm. I'd recommend making a reservation~~!

Wakoan's menu and the complimentary potato salad starter

The menu at Wakoan Suseong Beomeo Branch is broad, ranging from alcohol to sashimi, seafood, soups, and fried dishes. The complimentary side dishes are potato salad and crackers.

From alcohol to sashimi, seafood, soups, and fried dishes — there were so many menu items you could enjoy as snacks or as a full meal, which made choosing fun too. It was a shame we couldn't try more dishes since there were only two of us ㅠ

With the receipt review event you can get one of stir-fried bok choy, fried eggplant, or mentaiko mayo baked potato, so I'd recommend writing a review and trying it~~!

Doesn't it look so appetizing?

Fried eggplant, 10,000 won: crisp outside, silky inside

The portion of fried eggplant at Wakoan Suseong Beomeo Branch didn't feel overpriced at all for 10,000 won! Crispy on the outside, really soft inside — delicious either dipped in the slightly spicy chili sauce or eaten plain.

Grilled chicken neck, 15,000 won: open-flame smoke and a springy bite

The grilled chicken neck meat is cooked over an open flame, so it was full of smoky char flavor! We ate it with the vegetables on the side, dipped it in sauce, and also ate it plain. That chewy texture made it a real standout dish!

Pork jowl hot plate fried rice, 20,000 won: scraping up the crispy bottom

Last, the pork jowl hot plate fried rice! With chewy pork jowl and garlic flakes on it, how could it not be delicious ㅠㅠ The fried egg on top was soft-boiled, and eating it together doubled the savory richness!

And true to a hot plate fried rice, scraping up the rice stuck to the bottom.. was that good..

I'll just say we scraped all three dishes clean before leaving.

Why dinner at Wakoan works even without alcohol

Wakoan Suseong Beomeo Branch is an izakaya, but it's also a great place to enjoy a meal without alcohol! I'm curious about the other menu items and the highballs, so I'd like to visit again!

They said one bottle of corkage is free, so if you have a nice gifted bottle, bringing it along would make it even more enjoyable💕 If you're looking for a cozy spot in Beomeo-dong to go with friends, coworkers, or a partner, I'd recommend this cozy izakaya restaurant, 'Wakoan Suseong Beomeo Branch'❤
