I stopped by Ilpum Chamsut Galbi when I was craving charcoal-grilled ribs in Dunpo, Asan. It's already a well-known, well-proven spot among locals — the kind of place everyone nearby has heard of. They've been running it in the same spot for over 20 years. This isn't a one-time hotspot for outsiders; it's a local favorite that Dunpo residents keep coming back to, so let's get into the review.

Parking and seating – a free lot with 100+ spaces right across the street

There's a free public parking lot directly across from Ilpum Chamsut Galbi, with room for over 100 cars. That makes it a great spot for group gatherings without any parking stress.

I visited at 11:30am, and even though there's usually a wait, this time there was no waiting at all — only 3 tables were occupied. More customers kept coming in after we sat down, though. The inside has over 80 seats.

Generous banchan (side dishes)

I think one reason Ilpum Chamsut Galbi is popular is that, beyond the tasty galbi itself, the side dishes come out generously too.

They also gave us a really generous amount of wrap vegetables. I tend to eat a lot of veggies, and at most barbecue places they only give a little so I usually have to ask for more — but here they gave plenty right from the start, which I loved.

(Honestly, a self-serve bar would be even better. There's no table-order tablet, so you have to call a staff member over verbally to order. When staff are busy, orders sometimes get missed, so I found myself wishing they had a self-serve setup.)

Unfortunately, doenjang (soybean paste) stew doesn't come as a default side. But even if you want to order more, the sides are cheap so it's no big deal — steamed egg and corn are ₩1,000 each, stone-pot rice is ₩2,000, and clam doenjang stew is ₩2,000.

Daily-marinated pork galbi, charcoal-grilled flavor

First we ordered 2 servings of pork marinated galbi (yangnyeom galbi). Since they've kept this spot running for over 20 years, there's real know-how behind maintaining the flavor of the marinated pork ribs — apparently they marinate the meat fresh in their special sauce every single day. That means the seasoning soaks deep into the scored meat, giving it a subtle, layered flavor that makes it even tastier, I think.

They also use good-quality charcoal, which gives it a totally different flavor from a regular grill plate. I love that smoky char you get as the sauce catches the charcoal heat.

We added one more serving of pork marinated galbi.

The charcoal heat was just right, so the meat didn't burn. If you don't manage the heat well, marinated galbi is easy to scorch — and it's such a waste to have to toss burnt bits. Here it was grilled well, so we could eat everything without wasting a thing.

Order nurungji ahead, and check out the weekday lunch special

My kid asked for nurungji (scorched rice), so I ordered it — but since nurungji naturally takes time to prepare, order it early if you plan to have some. It took over 15 minutes. My kid kept asking when it would arrive, but once it came out, there was so much that they ended up sharing with me and my spouse — I only got a photo of it after the fact, late as usual.

On weekdays, they also offer a lunch special. The lunch set includes domestic pork shoulder stir-fried in an aged marinade (jeyuk-bokkeum), served affordably, with unlimited rice refills — I imagine a lot of people working at Asan Technovalley take advantage of it. I don't have anyone to go with on weekdays, so I'm a bit envious; it seems like a filling, no-fuss full meal I'd love to try, but I just don't have weekday lunch company.

Final thoughts

Twenty years of experience shows — the same reliable charcoal aroma and generous hospitality. There's clearly a reason this place has stayed put in Dunpo, Asan for so long, and it proves it through both flavor and service. The tasty marinated pork galbi, the flavor from strong charcoal heat, and the hearty side dishes all left me satisfied. On weekdays, the good-value jeyuk lunch set makes it worth a daytime visit too. If you want to taste real charcoal galbi near Dunpo, give Ilpum Chamsut Galbi a try.
