Daejeon Korean restaurant in Oryu-dong: brisket bibimbap at Idobonga

Today I went to Idobonga, a galbitang (short rib soup) spot near Seodaejeon Station that's great for a solid meal before or after catching a train! It's right in front of Seodaejeon Station so it's super accessible, and they have a wide range of hearty Korean menu items — galbitang, galbijjim, chadolbak bibimbap, yukhoe bibimbap and more — so it also seemed like a good pick for a family meal out or lunch. Especially with the big underground parking lot supporting 3 hours free and the overall clean interior, it was a comfortable place for lunch haha.

Where is Idobonga, and how far is it from Seodaejeon Station?

Idobonga is a 3-minute walk from Seodaejeon Station, so it's a decent option for train travelers too. Walking past the station, the cute Kkumssi Family statues caught my eye first!! Maybe because it's Seodae'jeon' Station, Kkumdori and Kkumsuni standing there in military uniforms felt oddly fitting, so I snapped a photo on my way past. Daejeon is fun starting from the station itself, don't you think??

✨ Inside Idobonga: a clean, spacious Oryu-dong dining room

Walking inside, the tables were spaced pretty generously, and there was a large picture window by the seats, so during the day natural light came in and made the atmosphere bright.

The space seemed good for everything from solo dining to family meals to gatherings, and I thought it was a solid Oryu-dong galbi restaurant for anyone looking for a clean Korean restaurant.

🥗 What is on Idobonga's self-serve side dish bar?

On one side of the restaurant there was a self-serve side dish bar set up.

You could freely help yourself to basic side dishes that go well with galbitang or bibimbap, like various kimchi, onions, and onion sauce.

There were more options than I expected — not just galbitang, galbijjim, and the seokgalbi (grilled short rib) set, but also bibimbap, hot pots, and side dish menus.

We ordered 🍲 galbitang for ₩16,000, 🥩 chadolbak bibimbap for ₩14,000, and 🥢 mukmuchim for ₩10,000 this time!

The mukmuchim came out first! It was packed with lettuce and cucumber and other vegetables, and the springy acorn jelly was evenly coated in a spicy-sweet sauce.

There was also a generous topping of sesame seeds for a nutty flavor, and eating the crunchy vegetables together with the soft jelly gave it a nice variety of textures.

The chadolbak bibimbap was colorful just to look at!

Shiitake mushrooms, bean sprouts, carrots, julienned radish, cabbage, egg garnish, seaweed flakes, sprouts, and more all came piled generously in one bowl.

There was a good amount of chadol (thinly sliced beef brisket) right in the center too, making it much heartier than a vegetable-heavy bibimbap.

Adding a piece of kimchi on top and eating it together got the seasoning exactly right and made it even more delicious!

And then the dish I was most looking forward to — the galbitang! A big rib bone sat in the stone pot with chopped green onion scattered on top, looking hearty from the start. The broth wasn't cloudy or heavy but rather clear, while still carrying a deep flavor drawn out from the meat.

Above all, the rib was really big, and when I picked it up with chopsticks the meat came off tender and easy.

Picking the meat off piece by piece and then mixing rice into the warm broth felt like a proper full meal! This is exactly why people looking for galbitang among Daejeon's galbi restaurants would love this place.

And here's another point that stood out at Idobonga! If you eat at the restaurant, you can get a free americano.

It was nice being able to finish off with a cup of coffee right after the meal without having to go to a separate café. There was also a notice that writing a Naver receipt photo review gets you ₩1,000 cash or 1,500 points. Sounds like a good event to keep in mind if you write receipt reviews often!

Is Idobonga worth it? Final take on this Daejeon restaurant

This visit to Idobonga near Seodaejeon Station was a place where I could comfortably enjoy hearty Korean food in a clean setting. In particular, the galbitang with the big rib bone had soft, filling meat, and the chadolbak bibimbap was also plenty for a full meal with its variety of vegetables and meat.
