I already love tteok, and these days it comes in pretty, dessert-like styles rather than only the usual varieties, you know? Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch sells everything from familiar traditional tteok to dessert-style varieties that fit today’s trends, and it operates as a rice cake café in Cheongju.

They also sell the currently popular pizza seolgi here. Just imagine how tasty cheese-topped pizza seolgi must be! I visited in the morning and couldn’t try it, but now I have a reason to go back soon.

Can you eat tteok and coffee inside?

The inside had a cozy café-like atmosphere. With table seating and group seating, you can enjoy tteok as a dessert with coffee before you go. “Rice cake café” suits Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch in Yullyang-dong much better than simply “rice cake shop.”

Freshly made tteok I found in the morning

Because it opens early in the morning, that is when the largest selection of freshly made tteok is available. When I visited, the tteok was just coming out. There were several kinds of baekseolgi (steamed white rice cake), jeungpyeon, songpyeon, ssuk gaetteok, jangi jitteok, and kkultteok—traditional tteok I’d been eating since childhood—sold in small portions.

There was also fruit chapssaltteok (glutinous rice cake), reflecting current trends. They make it with fruits including tangerine, strawberry, and Shine Muscat grapes. Frozen tteok was packaged for sale too, and you can also buy Seoulmaeum Cookat tteok, so keep that in mind!

The gift wrapping is done well, so these make lovely casual presents for people around you. The prices are not burdensome, but the packaging looks luxurious!

They also sold coffee and drinks to pair with the tteok, plus sikhye (sweet rice punch) and children’s drinks. The prices are reasonable, making them easy to enjoy alongside tteok!

I picked fruit chapssaltteok and ssuk gaetteok

I bought fruit chapssaltteok, ssuk gaetteok, and castella pumpkin injeolmi (pounded rice cake). They were the kinds I always look for at a tteok shop, so I bought exactly to my taste! Since the tteok had just been made, it felt even more delicious.

The fruit chapssaltteok especially was so good, with a fresh, sweet tangerine flavor, and the castella pumpkin injeolmi was nice as a simple snack. I usually eat ssuk gaetteok for its nutty flavor, but this one had a great chewy texture as well and was truly satisfying.

Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch also offered table-setting sets for a baby’s 100th-day celebration and first birthday. I reserved tteok for those celebrations while raising my own baby, so I liked that the sets and fixed prices were clearly listed like this.
